- On this event for blacksmith we make iron from local found bog ore in a charcoal heated furnace. Also you can watch the work of several blacksmith. Hamerslagdag 2016 Roggel, The Netherlands. Watch also the video from:
2017 • Making Iron Hamerslag...
2018 • Hamerslagdag 2018
2019 • Making Iron. Hamerslag...
And if you want to know how we make our own charcoal, look over here. • Charcoal making. - Zábava
I do enjoy watching the old-style smelting process. It would be awesome to see someone forging it into something afterwards. Thijs van de Manakker is also enjoyable to watch.
John André Thanks. In a few days I Wil post a new video about the Hamerslagdag 2017. It realy was a verry nice weekend again. So stay tuned and enjoy the next video also...!
I trained in Japan in 1968. Wonderful experience. It took a month to make sword quality steel.
I assume you had to work with black sand?
why does it take so long to make a sword steel?
@@ddal3998 The furnace alone to make the steel takes a couple/few weeks ( the Japanese furnace is far different than the one shown here) to build & fire the ore block (bloom) and IF successful it goes to the master that guides the hammering. Where and how hard, how hot are all pinnacle in the process. There are many videos available to see the entire process.
In Africa our eyes have opened
If only the ancient vikings would have thought of going down to Home Depot and getting one of those electric blowers, they could have saved themselves a lot of sweat pumping those cowhide bellows :-)
Somebody needs to phone Ragnar and tell him this
Outstanding.
What a cool get together. You guys are serious about bringing your equipment though. And awesome result of course.
Wow!, really cool!
Nice work! Glad to see Technicus Joe in the neighborhood ^^
Wow I love your mortar apply technique xD
Great memories for me. Thanks so much !
very cool. it looks like you guys had a lot of fun!
That was a very nice bloom. Keep up the great work!
Thank you Dayne. We keep on trying to improve..!
john is a very strong guy !
I'll try it home.thanks for the video
Молодец супер 👍👍
love to be with u people...u enjoy it more than extracting iron.great bless u
Ajay, thank you for your kindness.
well done i'm going to give it a try
I remember thinking as a kid "wow the wind in those countries must be remarkably consistent for those windmill buildings to be able to work". Durrr...
Today I have seen somthing new thanks for sharing this video
A like for the furnace.
A blacksmiths use of the sledgehammer is ALWAYS right hand nearest to the head of the hammer.
Only farmers use it the other way..
Greetings from a danish smith
Unless they are left handed or ambidextrous, or don't want to have one arm freakishly bigger than the other...
saving to re review later.:)
thank you 4 ever
"Charbon du bois" literally means "Coal of the wood"
It's "charbon *de* bois" for "charcoal"
great bloom
Awesome.
When you dropped the bloom. I jumped a bit
That was close to his legs.
Awesome video btw. What did you make?
Hail from Vermont!!
Thanks. We split the Bloom up in a few pieces. My piece of the bloom is on a shell in my house and i watch it every day as a reminder to a fantastic weekend with good friends.... Coming next 22 may we start over again after 2 years corona lock down..... Feeling happy...!!
You don't even need a magnet. You could just pan the black sand out of the crushed ore by washing it until all the iron is at the bottom and the silicate have been lifted off.
Thanks Bilbo. Could indeed be an option. Just like panning gold. I like it..! This weekend is the next edition of the Hamerslagdag. We develloped something new to separate the iron ore..... I hope I can put it on tape for the next video. Problem is only that my old camera broke down today :-( Feeling sad. I hope I can fix it on time..!
imagine how life was back in the days.......
I can imagine smell of people
Id like to see someone go from stone tools to iron without using existing iron or steel tool or items.
There is one guy
John Plant
His channel is primitive technology

Wooo
Awesome video, thanks for sharing. Was the powdered ore not pelletized before feeding it to the bloomery? And did this have any impact on it (efficiency, etc)?
No it was not. We did feed it as powder. I don't know if this has any effect on the end result, but this is ore in the most pure form. We measure everything before feeding. Ore, charccoal etc. And we keep a log of it so we can learn from it for the next time and try to improve the proces. Next time will be next week on the next edition of the Hamerslagdag. 21 may 2017. Welcome to join us..!
I like iron
Herzlichen Glückwunsch
Muito interessante
Tem br em todo lugar né? xD rsrs
I like trains
Mooi spul
Enjoyed the video. Nice bloom. What ratio charcoal to ore did you use?
fungi forge Thanks. We start in a ratio 1 part ore and 1.5 charcoal. Halfway the proces we go to 1 ore and 1 charcoal. It all depends a little bit of the speed of the proces.
Mer roliga vids
thanks for this very good video bye tcharly dessine
quick question. what do you do in the abscense of magnets?
Eddy quick answer. We just add more raw iron ore..... :-)
Hamer slag dag is the name of the event Iron is Iron in case anyone else got confused.
alvinraydj3 Good conclusion Alvin, it is always dificult to find a good title. I tried to find a mix between the Dutch name of the event, Hamerslag dag and in English, what we are doing, making iron.....!
could you do a tutorial on finding iron & making iron no tools just primitive i saw this guy that i've followed on youtube for a while and he grabed "iron bactira" slaped some charcole and something else and got iron ingot out of it. "if you already have one i'm sorry ahead of time i havn't checked out the videos on this channel" i'd love to be able to make my own knife not for selling but i just love nives.
alvinraydj3 , you can find a video about mining the ore on my channel. czcams.com/video/Hf6126Uo9Lw/video.html Watch also the new video Makinng iron, hamerslagdag 2017. This year we build also a rocket stove charcoal retort to make our own charcoal. More about this item will folow. So stay tuned my friend....!
Good gedoon jonges
Danke Henri. Op 23 juni doon we ein noe poging.....😊😊
Very cool
Andy sinishtaj, Thank you.!!
You have over looked a Major help that you have at hand, that would make your life easier for sure..Who's is the Windmill? it would make a fantastic bellow. I think the Miller could loan you a pulley , maybe. Just my thoughts..I love this stuff.
Nice plan John, but we have to keep a safe distance to the mill....
the name Hammerslagsdag translates to hammer hit day in danish
When did we get to Jamaica, mon?
I've watched a number of videos on this subject now, seeing the ore being roasted before the smelt is not something I've seen elsewhere, how does this help the process? How much ore did you start with and was it just normal lumps of bog ore, or was there something special about it? I'm fascinated by the process and would like to attempt something similar, however being in the southwest of the UK, I need to make sure I get the correct materials and process them correctly. Is roasting the ore something unique to the type of ore you have there? Finally, well done on the smelt, most others that I've seen have only resulted in less than half that amount of iron at the end of it!
The roasting of the ore is important. It will change the structure of the ore and the ore will become magnetic after the proces. You can also split the ore in small pieces easy and separate the good ore with a magnet from the waste materials. So the stuff you proces in the furnace is verry pure. To see witch ore we use and how we mine it, watch this movie on my channel. czcams.com/video/Hf6126Uo9Lw/video.html
Next edition of the Hamerslagdag will be on 21st of may and we shall build again a charcoal heated furnace and try to improve the proces.
BigBrotherPinkie , If you are dealing with clay, you can wash it away with water. The iron ore we use is verry solid and heavy. To see how we mine it, watch the movie about it on my channel. I did place the link in the comment above. Good luck with your iron hunt..!
i've wondered about the roasting as well....are you not sacrificing some of the non-magnetic elements that might be in there with it? (manganese, cobalt, etc)??
Tim Hyatt , to be honest, i don't know.... It is an interesting question to do some research on this matter.
softer to break it up into smaller pieces making it easier to roast
Id love to be able to talk to someone about this i have 101 questions, why did they take the magnet to it? Do they want to separate the magnetite from the hematite?
The magnet removes the ferrous ore. And so the ore is cleaner for use in the furnace and we have less slag.
Where do you get the ore from? Local deposit?
@@MultiNaatje sorry just read description, i didn't know bogs had deposits like that i thought bogs had iron bacteria
@@coltoncowan682 We harvest the ore nearby. In this short film you can see how we did this. czcams.com/video/Hf6126Uo9Lw/video.html There is also a short film on my channel from last years harvest. Have fun watching it...☺☺
It would be great to participate personally !!!!
Grappig,
Gaaf dit! Waar haal je de erts vandaan?
Dit graven we vlakbij lokaal op. Ook hier staat een video van op mijn kanaal. czcams.com/video/HQTzd_0h6Yg/video.htmlsi=3-b61vhZRGesJjSH
please switch that music for Skyrim Soundtrack - From Past To Present
I like the music Iohann, but I am sorry. I am not free to use it...!
Nop leave it, it matches perfectly for me while im smoking sum weed and watch this video....
Go high ma frend :v
REALLY WELL DONE. LOTS OF WORK. WHEN POUNDED DOWN SHOULD MAKE TWO GOOD SWORDS AND SOME SHIP RIVETS. THANK YOU HAVE FUN AMD TAKE CARE GARE
Gary Chynne Thanks Gary, next edition of the Hamerslagdag will be on 21 may 2017. Feel free to join us....!
17 kg of iron should make many more swords then just 2...most likely more like 8-10.
@@koningbolo4700 this is not pure lol
I wish I were with you
Thank you. You are welcome..!
Thank you for your kindness, and wish you happy days
What's actually going on? How does the clump of iron show up in the bottom?
Hello Kenny. well.... it's magic. every time again...! :-) Always a surprise when opening the furnace. There are a lot of things that affect the proces. Quality of the ore for example. inside the furnace the iron ore reacts with the burning charcoal. We try to manage the temperature about 1100 degrees celcius. When temperature gets higher, we produce cast iron that a blacksmith can not use. Inside the furnace FE2O3 reacts with 3CO and its result is 2FE + 3CO2. The iron is not melted but blows into the bloom together. After this proces a blacksmith needs to edit the bloom into his fire to get rid of all the pollution before he can use it to produce pretty things.
in turkey i found a region which has pure iron like potato shape ,is it worth to make knife etc from that iron?
Sure it is. It is always nice to use local found materials and make some pretty things of it. It always gives me a good feeling..!
thank you :)
hammerslagdag. awesome name 😅😅😅
Do you have any tips of sourcing the ore?
John Wawrysh , do you mean were we find the ore? We look for little kreeks with brown colourd water. So we know there is iron to find in the neighbourhood. Hopefull close to the surface...
Please tell us how good is the iron you get about the carbon content and what will be the total amount of that hot chunk of the iron
Love and likes from tuibuang village ccpur manipur India
L Sticker Helllo. I think the iron is verrry good. I can not give you the exact numbers about the carbon content. I just don't know. I wish i have some one to help me with tis matter...!!! If you would like to see how the "chunk of iron" looks inside.... you can watch it on this video. czcams.com/video/X3HnsnVt4Ck/video.html The bloom was about 17 kg...! Thank you for watching this video and best wishes for you from the Netherlands.
Oh wow nice bbq
What was made out of the bloom? Did you all just split the bloom up among yourselves?
Yes we did Tom. My part of this bloom is still in one piece. I love to watch it and it reminds me of a great weekend we had together and in this way I keep respect for our ancestors who invented the process of ironmaking...!
Hey bob, furnace this rock. Why? You'll find out.
The Dutch teach this to the Mamagosos at Burkina Faso? Or the other way round? Or simul?
I really don't know. What I do know for sure is that both of us can learn something from each other... :-)
جميل
شكرا لك
What were you using as fuel
We are using charcoal.
Hello Kitty furnace 😂
こういうの好き
ありがとう。 私のチャンネルにはさらに多くのビデオがあります。 見て楽しんでください。
MultiNaatje わざわざありがとうございます(´・ω・`)
Man which tool to start with going from stone to iron
I bet you could forge with wood hammer on wood would just take a long time and a lot of wood tools but you could go from wood strait to iron
What kind of clay do u use ?
It is the same clay what is used for making bricks to build a house.
Did you spark test it?
Yes we did. The quality could be better.....
NEEDS MORE HUGE HAMMERS
Chris Pederson . Indeed Chris, come and join us next year.... welcome.. ☺
is the guy at 10:01 a huge fan of enders game??? cus thats a huge Ender's game reference for anyone who's read the series
Sasha Popovic , I don't know. But indeed, Remi would fit in the serie perfect...:-)
@5:30, what kind of magnet is that?
It is Just a regular permanent magnet. We build it in a tube with a bottem and a spring. When you pull the handle up, the magnet goes up and the magnetic ore falls from the bottem.
Şimdi bun lar nasıl bir maden cıkarmaya calıșıyor
Bölgede çıkardığımız cevherden demir yapıyoruz.
Was that Joey Van der Steeg in this video?
Yes indeed it was..!
忙了幾天雖然只得到17公斤的生鐵但我想整個過程是有趣的
謝謝。 很高興忙了幾天。
Remember that movie office space?
Man Gagan Man did you want them to put a TPS report on their iron bloom?
Joey
Это только крица. Железа там гораздо меньше ))
Leuke vid. Als Julie nog ooit grondstoffen nodig hebben let me know
Dank je wel ahmed allah. We zullen dit zeker in gedachten houden..!
using electric fans, the magnet filtering thingie, factory made bricks... Why not just go ahead and buy steel ingots?
please do not talk because we might listen to your thoughts-I like this mind reading better
Was that Technicus Joe?
Craig Bynog yep it is.
MultiNaatje, I thought so! Love his vids!
Alchemist
Молодці! При необхідності, будемо їздити з України по метал(мабуть). )))
Дякую ...!
nice video. 17kg.
Будь ласка.
ganja-style?
They use a primitive technology furnace together with an electric fan. Seriously? What's the purpose then of this video? Ancients did it without a fan.
Artyom Galstyan best of both worlds. All the steel but no sore arm.
Haha this kind of dude again
Please....no more of that music. Couldn't watch it all. No instructions or explaining.

Magnet and eletric blower 👎
I know. But sometimes you have to make choices. There is just not enough manpower to do everything the way we would like to do ...
cool video, but absolutely atrocious and annoying choice of music. Leave this obnoxious stock music to the stupidly cheap "10 ten useless life hacks" videos. Much more suited to the channel to use some kind of folk music.
