  • In this video, I demonstrate how to mount (glue) watercolour paper to cradled wood panel. I love to use cradled wood panels, and wood blocks for a different way to present my finished artwork. Watercolour art can be mounted to wood and finished with a cold wax medium, such as Dorland's or Gamblin wax medium. Acrylic paintings on paper can be mounted to wood and finished with an acrylic varnish. I like to use both Liquetex matte gel medium as my "glue", and also as a gloss varnish when I am sealing/finishing acrylic work on paper. In this video I talk about the type of wood panels that I have used and enjoy working with. I have included the beginning steps, right through to how to trim off excess paper around the edges of the panel after 12-24hrs of drying time. I also like to paint the edges of my panels with acrylic paint, and sometimes add details with paint pens.
    Supplies:
    Art on paper (90lbs to 140lb watercolour paper)
    Cradled wood panels , or wood surface, or art journal cover
    Glue - "gel medium" or inexpensive Mod Podge. (Liquetex matte gel medium is my recommendation if your budge allows)
    Gloves- optional
    Brayer/ flattening tool/rolling pin
    Baby wipe/wet clean rag/ paper towel (damp on one side)
    Cutting board/Self healing mat
    exacto knife
    Tack cloth (optional) hardware store wood cloth
    Acrylic paint pen/ paint for edges (optional)
    Soft makeup sponge for application of paint to edges (optional)
    Flat hard surface (I use my countertop/glass table)
    Heavy books or object for flattening
    Wax/parchment/paper
    Sandpaper- fine, soft grain (optional)

    Cradled wood panels :
    "Destination Art", "Kensington Art Supply", or "Inglewood Art Store" , Calgary AB , Canada Art stores.
    Or Visit your local art store and ask for "cradled wood panels", often there are many square and rectangular sizes to choose from. (6"sq is a good starter size). Many companies offer them in sets of 3, at a lower pricepoint.

    Paint (optional): Iridescent copper light (fine) by Golden

    Dorland's or Gamblin cold wax to seal/finish watercolours (optional depending on how you seal/protect your art).
    Note- I do not show the process of sealing and protecting the art after it has been mounted to panel.
    Acrylic paint pens (optional for decorating edges of panel): I like "Posca " paint pens: mention Posca Bronze chisel tip paint pen.
    Paper that is 98lbs or 140 lbs Canson XL watercolour/mixed media paper/ Arche's cold pressed paper.

    Thank you Allison!! That was so helpful and will be a great reference going forward! I have been relaxing by painting some base layers while enjoying your video on my iPad, by battery operated candlelight, since there is an emergency power grid alert across Alberta this evening. I cleaned my paintbrush like you have highlighted in your latest videos and my creative juices are starting to flow again after a dry spell. It has been a real treat to have multiple videos to watch. Thank you for sharing so generously with all of us. ❤️

      What a special gift for your son it’s so cool he loves art so much. I know my daughter and have some of our. Best times creating art together. It’s just a real gift to be able to share a beloved passion with a person you love especially one so therapeutic. He can keep that to show his kids one day.

    I would love to see you work on the wood pallette, that had watercolor swatches on it! I haven't been brave enough to do one on my own! Thanks 😊

    It was so nice to run into you at the grocery store the other day. I have been following your channel for a few months and heard you say you lived in Calgary, but I was still very surprised to see you in person. You are just as gracious in real life as you are on youtube 🙂! Also, I just love your genuine excitement creating art. It is very inspiring. Watercolour is something I've started to do for fun and appreciate all your tips.

      I believe I'd touched on this in a few of my videos already , and highly recommend checking out Bob Blast's youtube video on "how to seal a painting with wax". It's a very helpful short video where he uses Dorland's wax medium to "buff" overtop his art on paper. Hope that helps.

    Thank you Allison for the great tutorial! I have a question though about the varnish. At what stage do you varnish the paper… so you do it before you mount it to the wood panel or after? Thank you again for putting in the time and effort into these tutorials, they are extremely helpful!!

      I varnish or wax after I’ve mounted it to the panel and it’s dried,.

    Question. If you’re doing mixed media on watercolor paper (acrylic paint or ink collage), should you gesso the paper?

    • @allisondawrant
      @allisondawrant  Před 5 měsíci

      great question. it depends what type of art you’re going for. Gesso can be used many ways- but I tend to use it as a way of giving the paper “tooth” to hold onto the paint/ media… it may help with lighter/thinner paper to bulk it up a bit… but I don’t typically gesso my watercolour paper as I use 140lb cold press paper. It tends to “hold” my mixed media and give it tooth”… It’s ultimately up to the artist and I would experiment both ways to see what works best with my own art style… this question makes me want to explore a bit further… thanks for watching and this question, .

    I use A LOT of glue. Otherwise I get bubbles. I don't do the reticulated movement. Perhaps I'll try that. Thank you

    • @allisondawrant
      @allisondawrant  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Let me know how it goes! there are a lot of variables… the paper weight and material, the type of wood, and type of glue… also temperature/climate of your environment… so much trial and error- but i have found “less is more” with the glue,.
