How did a Spelunky Classic speedrunner get away with cheating for 8 years? Watch the video to find out!
Thanks to Saturnin55, Gary, Groomp, and everyone in the Spelunky community for helping keep the boards clean!
UPDATE: Barrymode was shown this video 5 days prior to posting and has since responded by changing the title of his run to reflect the truth.

Team Groomp for life!!
@@sethc9781 YES
I feel bad for ExplodingCabbage, had the real WR for years and didn't even know it.
How 2.53 is better than Groomp's 2.40?
@@1God1Fury Groomp's was achieved only in 2021. EC's run was submitted in 2010. He had the WR for 11 years
And won't even get the satisfaction now 1) because he was beaten for real 2) because it just doesn't come with any satisfaction to come upon that knowledge now as a "winner".
@@weevilsnitzThe thing with speedrunners is that quite a lot of them cheat for years and years without being caught and then you get this landslide investigation affect where it turns out half the runners are cheaters. See minecraft as an example. So its entirely possible EC, Groomp or various other people on the spelunky boards are also cheating - not saying they are, just pointing out that I wouldn't be surprised if they also were.
@@1God1Fury Use your brain.
I think the scariest thing about this is that we have no idea if this is just an isolated event or if more runs have been faked by others. If a believed world record was allowed to stand for that long because concrete proof wasn’t known, how many other ways could and have speedruns been cheated without any scrutiny?
As long as we have persistent community members the cheaters will always end up getting caught...especially when their position is so high on the board.
@@XanaGear That’s true, it is admirable seeing how persistent people are in catching cheaters even this much later. It just sucks thinking that there are people getting praise they don’t deserve cause they didn’t honor the rules
This is a risk with every single speed game. There are likely cheated runs sitting on just about every semi-popular leaderboard out there. Runs that aren't top 10 generally don't get looked hard at, and runs by established community members can be given the benefit of the doubt. You can at least rest easy knowing that the WR (and most likely the top 3) on many boards nowadays are getting looked at with a level of scrutiny never seen before, thanks to the recent popularity of these videos.
Honestly at this point If we can figure out how to to CO, we can catch a cheater.
It also varies with how much attention is paid to the leaderboard. Xana says in the video that the Spelunky community largely moved on to the other games in the series, and that's reflected on how many runs have been submitted to each game. Any% has 152 entries for #1, 211 for #2, but only 29 for Classic.
More popular games will have more scrutiny, and higher runs will have more scrutiny. But as glitch-hunters and other researchers find out more about the game, it means there's more information available to expose potential cheaters. A while back a Super Meat Boy run was found to be spliced because someone discovered that the loading animation uses a fixed clock cycle. Then a run of A Link to the Past was found to be spliced because someone discovered that the way you kill Ice Armos has an effect on Ganon's firebat pattern.
In many of these cases, including this Spelunky run, people in the community were already suspicious, it just wasn't easy to prove until more research was done on the game. It's just a matter of how public those suspicions are.
""I'm sure he'll do the right thing at this point"
If sarcasm was a harnessable form of energy, oil/nuclear/electric/wind/etc would become obsolete overnight from this statement alone.
He actually did, 8 years too late but the video's gone now.
i feel bad for the person who had the record for 10 years
saturnin55 did some really impressive detective work to solve the missing tile. I was pretty active in ye olde Spelunky Classic modding scene, and I'd completely forgotten that the Savable Spelunky mod existed. Indeed, without the context of that mod, the missing tile is compeltely bizarre - most of the ways you'd want to tinker with the game to make a bogus speedrun would never touch the transistion screens.
yeah, it's really cool that he was able to find it especially with the forums being down
:NOTAPLANET:
What's really interesting is that it turned out that the guy didn't actually use that mod. He used Cheat Engine to run the same seed repeatedly, spliced together his best run of each room, and then made his own Game Maker mod of the transition screens to make believable fake ones with "accurate" timers for the spliced rooms to edit in.
Literally any mod to the transition screen would delete that tile, it only proved his game was modded, not how. But by sheer coincidence, both him and the creator of the save mod got lazy in the same way and didn't bother re-placing the tile, so because nobody involved understands programming, they thought it was proof he was using the save mod.
@@Chocomint_Queen “nobody understanding programming” is not correct, he actually didn’t run the same seed repeatedly as well…he said this much in his comments.
The fact is that he didn’t use the mod we thought he used, but we came to the same conclusion after we learned that game maker 8 deletes tiles when placing objects.
Knowledge of programming has absolute nothing to do with this discovery, it actually comes down to arbitrary knowledge of an outdated program that has since been fixed to no longer have this issue.
@@XanaGear Yea lol, I've been using gamemaker for almost 10 years and I didn't know it used to do this. Great detective work. Though knowing that gamemaker best practices are to execute code through invisible objects usually kept in the top left corner did make this my first thought when I first saw it (at the beginning of your video lol).
That last point I wish more people would take to heart. "It's just a game, everything'll be fine."
You mean he didn’t just have a good gaming chair? :(
Back then, there's no such thing as "gaming chair".
frankly my gaming chair is EXTREMELY offended at these accusations of being less powerful than people believe
@@Trimint123 Um yes there was? DXRacer made the first line of them back in 2006. Not even two years later they became very profitable.
Apparently he has already admitted that the run is segmented and changed his video title and description - of course not without featuring "world record" in his new description text.
yeah, he only mentioned in the description that it is a "would be world record". title should be changed. but hey, what ever get you clicks, huh?
"after 8 years, wow, like all the way back in 2005?" - Me, unironically.
Like he explained to Vice the run is still “totally real in every way” right? I mean, he did have to press all the buttons and move and stuff to beat these levels he played over and over before splicing them together amirite 🤠
Weird how, if the mod simply put the tile in one of the open spots of the rectangle Guy walks through, he'd still be getting off scott free to this day.
honestly, thank god the modmaker /didnt/ put it there! i doubt it was intentional, but its such a neat way to tell a modded game from a vanilla one.
As someone who used to be involved in the speedrunning communities, it really seems they're all pretty much run by dirtbags.
I wonder why he didn't edit it inn, that would have taken a couple of minutes and the record would have held up to this day.
@@svampebob007 Cheaters are lazy. That's why they cheat, instead of working hard for the actual real win.

I don't know what spelunky is, but somehow this video is super interesting
Classic spelunky is totally free if you ever wanna check it out.
It's a roguelike platformer about spelunking down into a deep cave system thing. A new game called Spelunky 2 just released a few months ago and added many new things to it. I've been playing spelunky for 4 - 5 years. I saw this run and thought it was amazing. But I didn't notice it was cheating. Guess that's how it lasted 8 years.
Very interesting! Great video, Xana.
The saddest thing to me is that if this mod was widely known, and the runner was honest about what they were doing, this might have made an interesting TAS category.
I'm sure other runners could top that time using the same cheats, but the idea of using save scumming in spelunky to get a perfect run is kind of intriguing to me. There are tons of different categories in this game, and a category using cheats or other tool assisted methods could have been a completely valid way of playing if there hadn't been any deception
Almost anyone could beat his time with any sort of knowledge of the game. I’ll do a quick run of it this weekend and give my thoughts on the category.
@@XanaGear I would be interested to hear speculation on whether or not you think this was his best cheated run. You make it sound like this game could be beaten MUCH faster with this cheat, so is it possible he did a slower run on purpose to try to make it look legit?
Or do you think this was his genuinely best cheated run and he just didn't have the skills that other classic runners have?
@@ckillgore I believe this is the best run he could get together.
@@ckillgore as far as we know, he only played spelunky for at most about a month - groomp, who has years of experience in all 3 spelunky games, was able to get a 2:08 today using the mod without too much trouble

He couldn't make it as a Fastest Mario.
Conservatives just aren't cut out for the alternative sexual marketplace of the radical left's speedrunning. He was still stuck in his work ethic of "do it right" instead of "go fast", in the Petersonian sense
Transition from Spelunky to Spelunky 2 is amazing!
Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't SDA accept a lot of segmented runs? Did this guy specifically claim RTA record?
I can't find Barry's video, so I assume he has deleted it.
Very interesting video. I myself have only done a few speedruns of games though I never uploaded them, I just did them for fun, one of my speedruns was Super Mario Land. I think my record time was something like 15 minutes, which last I checked the fastest time for that game was 12 minutes, so I’m pretty happy with that.
I think he deleted the video now? I tried to look for it but it wasnt on his channel
I like to think the cheater doesn't remember anything about cheating.
I also like to think the actual WR holder from 11 years ago doesn't even remember the game existed.
I have no idea why but that is funny to me.
Good hunting, gathering of evidence, and display of such evidence in a direct organized manner.
i dont see the video? did he take it down?
Catching cheaters will always beat any speed run world first any day.

Great video Xana
So, if he had just spliced all of the loading screens, no one would've caught him??
It might be just a game, but he didn't only cheat in a videogame... He cheated in a competition of skill. It would be a different story if he just played and cheated in his room as a kid bc nobody would know about it. Posting it on the internet = you want it to be judged.
Nonono, guys, he just shifted into second gear before the game started.
This has some Fireb0rn “Cotton caught cheating” vibes
Great vid, maybe I should try out classic.
Great job exposing the truth and I'm glad he has admitted it.
One thing though, you say at one point 'This immediately discredits any reply he might have' or something to that effect. I think this is too strong a statement at the point where he has not admitted his fault yet. We should always be open minded enough to hear and consider the argument. Obviously the evidence and the detail required to change your mind at that point would be a very high bar to meet, but don't put yourself in a mental state where you "immediately discredit" someone's side of the story before you hear it.
Obviously here the certainty was ultimately justified, but it isn't always the case and it's a good reflexive muscle to build to catch yourself from making a mistake.
PS - I really appreciated that you asked people not to try to attack/destroy him, obviously remove the record, discredit him, let everyone know the truth, but then it's time to move on. That is the right way to handle it. Shaming people very often hardens them and makes them dig in, if they even feel any shame at all (e.g. Billy Mitchell). Plus everyone makes mistakes and we should allow them a path to admit it and learn/mature from those mistakes. Barry has sorta done the first part, and we can hope he does the second part, but the point is that at least you gave him the option. The rest isn't really about you, me, or anyone else but Barry, it's up to him to make the most of it.
So why wasn't the missing tile alone enough to disqualify it? Why it was missing was most certainly a mystery, but since it was hardcoded in... there was no doubt that it was only missing if he didn't mess with the game files in the first place. Add to that some questionable choices in the speedrun itself and that pretty much confirms something went on and that should be enough to disqualify him and the run.
Yeah, we could remove it from Mossranking but unfortunately he was the supermod on SRC. We wanted the full story before we presented to SRC staff.
He would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for the meddling mod maker who mistakenly deleted the third tile.
have literally never been interested in spelunky. after watching this video im redownloading as i write this comment

I played spelunky classic back in high school, and just yesterday picked up spelunky 2 on my switch! Great games
Just a game in the same way that Everest is just a mountain
did barry remove his speedrun?
I think people ought to have suspected the missing tile more. It's one of those things you could ask from the beginning: has any other player ever seen a missing tile? Or is this something about this guy's game that we should really be suspicious about. A google search at the time might reveal the mod (someone mentioning the missing tile when using the mod), or reveal that 0% of people who played the game had ever seen a missing tile.
I've never watched anything Spelunky related. How am I here and why am I interested in it?
Anyone in any community learns quickly that if you call bullshit on a moderator or anyone in an elevated position, you get your post deleted, banned, or accused of shit-stirring and discredited. It would not surprise me if he did this at some point.
get the pitchforks boys
So you're saying there could potentially be more people splicing using a mod that doesn't make the mistake of deleting a tile
oh how i love speedruning drama
How do cheaters live with the guilt that they are a fraud, and that they are robbing someone else of the award that they weren't skilled enough to achieve? It just seems so pointless.
Watched with no sound and subtitles but still enjoyed throughly. I especially liked the part where you made sure to tell people not to turn this into a hate crusade.
This guy's in reeeeeaaaal trouble.
As always - The real record in speed running is not how fast you beat the game but how long it takes before you are caught cheating that record. Why people waste their time cheating a record I'll never know. You don't just cheat a community, You cheat yourself.
That might have been not the only illegitimate record. And rip cabbage :(
