The History of Eggplant%, Spelunky's Most Infamous Run. Thanks For Watching! Runners/Notable Features in the Video Bananasaurus Rex BaerTaffy Chaindead jjg27 Kinnijup d_tea Subscribe :)
This is so well made! It may be a little weird being 'the eggplant guy', but I'm really happy to have been a part of such a legendary story and community effort. Thank you for making this!
Rex! Thank you so much for completing the run in the first place. This video never would have been possible without you so I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
What’s even better is that if you kill Yama in spelunky 2 as Tina he has a special piece of dialogue, which is both neat attention to detail and a very cool tribute I love this game so much
Also, as a new viewer I see you only started adding voice to your videos recently. If you ever want to go back and re-do topics but with your more recent style I'd love that, the videos are much easier to follow with voice over and I could probably use all the tips you can give me. 😅
Always love to see the insight on the community of a game, so much stuff can be done in games so it's no wonder there is a lot to talk about them! Loving the new style of content, found the channel from the Ank skip, stayed for all the rest
I remember watching the BearTaffy and Bisnap stream where they discovered the Moai head glitch. That was so wild kinda sad you didn't mention Bisnap at all, he was the one who figured it out
I love that they include that flavour text in Spelunky2 referencing Rex. That’s so supportive of the community around the game and I love when companies will do that
Bananasaurus's run was around the time when I started playing Spelunky and this was legendary, even to a noob like me Derek Yu is a genius, fantastic game, fantastic game
Lessgo big turkey man upload and im first. :) Edit: Finished video (very good), and now I know the reference behind Tina Flan's triumph over Yama. Also never knew about the moe-eye chain and ball thing. Learn something new every day, even about stuff from multiple years ago, ha!
Bro I’m not going to lie I was watching this after watching some of your other videos and I thought you were a professional CZcamsr. Well done man! Love the content keep on goin!
The eggplant was absolutely intended to be for co-op: you can have the second player hold the scepter, stay alive through the moai and even the gift box is no issue because every shopkeeper will gift wrap any items you buy
So surreal to see a video about all this considering i remember seeing half of this happen as it came out. Edit: holy crap i never put together that the spelunky 2 journal entry was referencing Brex, awesome!
I’ve been researching this for the past few days to show my boyfriend but nothing this comprehensible seemed to exist. You have come at the perfect time!
I was hoping this would have some info on using the new skip to get there faster. *shrug* on the other hand, the history of the run up to last month aint a bad thing to find either.
“Those that played Spelunky will know how bad the hired hand AI is” - ah yes I totally got far enough playing Spelunky to see a hired hand… I totally didn’t rage quit on the the first section of levels…
The hired hand is designed not to pick up the eggplant, later on though we realised you could trick the hired hand into picking up the eggplant by using another object.
@Pastryperson This video is captivating! And I wonder. Is the info at around 8:20 inaccurate as Hectique beat the any% world record? Or am I just thinking of a different category.

Rex! Thank you so much for completing the run in the first place. This video never would have been possible without you so I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
The run was so legendary that yama in spelunky 2 has a special dialog intraction with tina
Wassup dude
The goat
Good stuff
The fact that the dude's achievement was solidified in the sequel via a character description is an actually awesome thing for the devs to do.
More than even that, there's an entire secret ending, area, and dialogue referencing the run!
The run became lore.
Historians wrote legends.
What’s even better is that if you kill Yama in spelunky 2 as Tina he has a special piece of dialogue, which is both neat attention to detail and a very cool tribute
I love this game so much
What does he say?
@@ianalvord3903 “Ah, You came to finish the job”
I don't even play Spelunky, but have really been enjoying these. I'm fascinated by what speedrunners accomplish. Good stuff
Great video. Always wondered how the heck people even discovered eggplant runs
eggplant
Editing this in case I was wrong
@@kabershshkabersh4272 what?
Imagine how much longer it would have taken if nobody had hacked the game client and extracted textures...
I was right
Great video! I didn't know the detail about the eggplant getting added into the lore, that's adorable.
Also, as a new viewer I see you only started adding voice to your videos recently. If you ever want to go back and re-do topics but with your more recent style I'd love that, the videos are much easier to follow with voice over and I could probably use all the tips you can give me. 😅
It feels so good to hear all of these names again. Used to be big into the spelunky community growing up so this hit of nostalgia was very nice
Holy shit. Back then I used to watch all BaerTaffy videos and saw it as it was released and never thought I was watching history being made
Needless to say, watched Brex eggplant run too.
This and twiggles curse run gotta be the most legendaries runs in the spelunky serie
I remember these moments happening on stream like it was yesterday, thank you for making this video, very well done
Great Video! I remember being there for BRex's stream and Baertaffy's streams while they did this, it's a blast to the past
I never knew Baer played a part in this discovery!
Absolutely amazing video. really well done with the narration over how eggplant runs all actually came to be. Thank you for this
Always love to see the insight on the community of a game, so much stuff can be done in games so it's no wonder there is a lot to talk about them! Loving the new style of content, found the channel from the Ank skip, stayed for all the rest
I never realize it was Baer that accidentally made the discovery, incredible
Glad to see BRex get some recognition! He's pretty underrated.
been loving the content!! the tips have really helped! i recently got to neo babylon for the first time :)
Glad to hear!
Great trip down memory lane. Was awesome to see this all happen real time and glad to see this awesome moment in spelunky history get documented well
That was a sweaty run... The "I'll call my friend to get some confidence boost" was gold
11:25 I had no idea that this was the reason why that was part of the lore, that's so cool
Another goat'd summary video. I genuinely enjoy your storytelling format. Keep it up my guy,
Amazing video, you are my favorite up and coming youtuber, you have helped reinvigorate my interest in Spelunky
Thank you!
best spelunky content rn, i love u
awesome video, this is a really great showcase of spelunky HDs history!
Fantastic videos, man. Keep up the great work
Thank you KY!
also shoutout to bisnap who is the guy on the call with Baer at the time of the discovery!
More of this content pls, best video you've made yet
Didn’t know the lore behind Tina’s journal entry, proud to share a main with this legend.
Oh shoot, 10 minutes ago? I dont even know this channel and im here REAL early!
Welcome :) Hope you enjoy the videos.
So good! I love your new style of video
I truly thing the coolest part is that the speedrunner got a special callout for his incredible dedication
Love the video! Your editing is really clean, and you have a smooth voice!
I remember watching the BearTaffy and Bisnap stream where they discovered the Moai head glitch. That was so wild
kinda sad you didn't mention Bisnap at all, he was the one who figured it out
not much to say other than amazing video, keep up the good work!
this is the kind of stuff I love to pop-up in my feed.
New to this channel and ever since I have been using Modlunky every time I see the character you have in your pfp I just get reminded of The Noid.
I love that they include that flavour text in Spelunky2 referencing Rex. That’s so supportive of the community around the game and I love when companies will do that
these videos be gooood! keep it up!
You have a really great youtuber voice, great videos
Oh wow I’m early, excited to watch!
This was a wonderful trip down memory lane
Bananasaurus's run was around the time when I started playing Spelunky and this was legendary, even to a noob like me
Derek Yu is a genius, fantastic game, fantastic game
I'm liking these spelunky HD videos!
Lessgo big turkey man upload and im first. :)

lessgo
Umm ackshually it’s spelled Moai 🤓
another cool thing : the moai bug got legitimized by adding a graphic for broken moai tilesss !
this is so wholesome that devs puted a player into their sequel
daym this is some summoning salt level shit. i love it. was hooked all the way through
Great video dude, enjoyed watching, gonna sub, keep it up!
Thank you! More to come
great video!
6:52 holy shit me reference
lol congrats on making it in the video
Bro I’m not going to lie I was watching this after watching some of your other videos and I thought you were a professional CZcamsr. Well done man! Love the content keep on goin!
not yet :)
speed runs are always so fascinating
Another great one!
Glad you liked it!
awesome video. might have to get back into spelunky, never managed to get the true ending
good luck :)
Also there is the new slip in the Olmec boss fight that was recently discovered. Theoretically you only need the eggplant to compete the run
great video
The eggplant was absolutely intended to be for co-op: you can have the second player hold the scepter, stay alive through the moai and even the gift box is no issue because every shopkeeper will gift wrap any items you buy
We could say he smacked that eggplant in his face! Great Video
Amazing video, always forgor how people brought the eggplant to Yama!
I remember watching that first eggplant run from Rex live
So surreal to see a video about all this considering i remember seeing half of this happen as it came out.
Edit: holy crap i never put together that the spelunky 2 journal entry was referencing Brex, awesome!
I have never played this game but it was interesting !
Very good video!!
thanks!
Good vid
Getting written into the lore of the game for being the first person to do the impossible, sure. Sounds fair
I’ve been researching this for the past few days to show my boyfriend but nothing this comprehensible seemed to exist. You have come at the perfect time!
Man Spelunky is one of the greatest and most polished games I've ever played. Up there with Terraria.
shut up.
@@Keithjustkeithwastaken Someone just died to a dart trap 5 times in a row :)
Now I know why Yama says what he does in Spelunky 2
And to think, pink could have been added to 2 if he were using her at the time
I never knew that is why tina's journal entry says she hit king yama in the face with a egg plant cool!
When I first seen this game I assumed it was some random mobile game.
How wrong I was.
i love splunky
“Challenging the community to achieve this glitch in a legitimate run.”
Dude it isn’t a glitch
Don't forget the Secret easter egg towards Bananasaurusrex in Spelunky 2 Eggplant world!
This is what data mining took from us.
He turned king yama into an eggplant, funniest shit i've ever seen.
i wonder if david yu intended for the ball and chain to be used in this way... it almost feels like there was a different solution
I was hoping this would have some info on using the new skip to get there faster. *shrug* on the other hand, the history of the run up to last month aint a bad thing to find either.
this is also called luck and practice
It's always the speedrunners beating wack challenges
oh thats why tinas bio says she was the one that hit yama
this was a thing in the og spelunky. it was known before
Spelunky players are one hell of a breed
“Those that played Spelunky will know how bad the hired hand AI is” - ah yes I totally got far enough playing Spelunky to see a hired hand… I totally didn’t rage quit on the the first section of levels…
Could eggplant% use the new olmec hell door breaking strat?
2:55 small correction, that's not a glitch, just a secret.
neat I am so bad at spelunky and haven't completed a single one of the endings. Good to see I'm just a scrub.
Great video! What is the music in the background of the video?(Specifically 5:10) Please and thanks in advance!
@superhk.5636 Thank You!! For the record, It is Mines B :]
If a hired hand can hold an item for you, then why didn't runners use them for the moai head as well as the scepter?
The hired hand is designed not to pick up the eggplant, later on though we realised you could trick the hired hand into picking up the eggplant by using another object.
@Pastryperson This video is captivating! And I wonder. Is the info at around 8:20 inaccurate as Hectique beat the any% world record? Or am I just thinking of a different category.
Wr as of this time
Can you test killing a shopkeeper, throwing them on spikes, and then see if they forgive you on the next level?
The big question is, are those two bypasses the intended method, or did the devs have something else in mind for those spots, that nobody ever found?
Great video. My only critique is "undoubtedly", not "undoubtebly"
Why does this video remind me of Sunnyv2 content style
reminds me of some gnome
10:57 I have not played the game that looks like it's meant to exist
genuinely brain dead of the devs to ask for something like this to be done if it needed glitches to preform then it was never legit anyway.
So.... this game is basically Super Pitfall?
can't the new olmec head skip allow to skip the scepter part?
It can now, with bookskip this run becomes significantly easier
10:10 I think you cut a little weirdly here
