    I've started using ChatGPT to find example sentences when preparing vocabulary flashcards. Given a word or phrase, it can quickly generate more usage examples than you could ever find in a dictionary, which really helps to understand the meaning of a new word.

      @jakubgadzala7474 Před rokem +2

      Some of the examples might be completely wrong. I have spent last few months using chatbot to generate random Chinese sentences and dialogues. Overall it is an amazing tool, but not a human replacement at all. Especially when it comes to details. I would advice general caution.

    8:05 Another big mistake from ChatGPT here is that < ch > is not an alveolo-palatal consonant at all, it is rather a retroflex consonant.
    Edit: And < q > is not a sibilant! It's also an affricate, just like < ch >.

    Fan Laoshi, I have a Taiwanese teacher who insists that the third tone dips. She says she has to hear my third tone go down for her to recognise it. The problem is worst when second tone follows. I have been learning Mandarin for 19 years(!) but was always told that my tones were pretty good, just the problem that you major on. Love your channel

    Hi Rita, you briefly mentioned how tones change when there are more than two 3rd tones in a row. This topic is exactly what keeps me from speaking Chinese with confidence, since I'm never completely sure. I've searched the internet for the answer, but never found a satisfactory one. Could you PLEASE make a video about this??? I've been enjoying your content here for a long time and I really think you should be the first one on CZcams addressing this issue! Who else if not you, right?....right?!
    Alright, enough trying to talk you into making such a video. I would really appreciate it if you do!

      I'd also love to see this video! I looked into this quite a bit when I first started learning and I couldn't find much agreement on how people really speak. I've seen some people claim it becomes 2 2 3 2 2 3 ... up to the last 3, but in reality it seems to be more of a question of sentence structure and how words most naturally group together? Fortunately you don't see more than 3 in a row that often.

    • @jakubdorofiej1052
      @jakubdorofiej1052 Před rokem +1

      @@VincentBLortie Same here! It's not that often, that's right. But I'd still like to know how to properly pronounce 我想买火车票 for example. I think it's 2223 but can't be sure.

    • @VincentBLortie
      @VincentBLortie Před rokem +1

      @@jakubdorofiej1052 I would have gone for 2323 because I can easily see the sentence grouped as (我想)(买火车票)but I also wouldn't be surprised if someone said 3223

    • @antomalanzo69
      @antomalanzo69 Před rokem +2

      @@VincentBLortie
      You're right, there's something about groups! You can check these examples:
      [我][很好]、[很][腼腆]、[好][理解]、[(彼bí)此][了解]、[买][好酒](=买好的酒) 3 23
      [展览][馆]、[迷你][版]、[买好][酒](=买完酒) 22 3
      [很][好理解] 2 323
      [可以][理解] 23 23
      [展览馆][里] 222 3
      [展览馆][很美] 223 23
      etc...
      I've asked multiple Chinese people, and they all say 我wǒ想xiáng买mái火huǒ车票, but I'm honestly having difficulties here to make a good division that would explain the data ^^'

    How people usually train tones? I think most people have a really hard time just knowing what tone they are using. Since most languages (mine included - portuguese) don't care about tones, I think that is definitely the hardest part too learn.

    I'm currently paying for ChatGPT premium (GPT4) and it's really good at chinese
    With GPT3.5, it would sometimes mistranslate sentences but with GPT4 it's able to explain each word and syllable without any problem, plus it also understands the culture so it will tell you if something is too formal depending on when you want to say something

    Yess, that's the keypoint for me : a teacher can low down the level of grammar and words where the student is! That's soo true. I have some Chinese friends and I thought it would be easier to use the language and I can practice speaking...but that is not exactly true...because they don't speed down and don't consider grammar and word usage, just push their thoughts into your face without any consideration ( not an offense, they are cute, but you know what I mean 😊)...sooo Yess, that's what a teacher knows!

    What do you mean there are a couple neutral tones?, I'm probably not getting the point...

    • @antomalanzo69
      @antomalanzo69 Před rokem

      Phonemically there's only one, but phonetically (their actual pronunciation), depends on the tone that precedes it. For example a neutral tone following a second tone is gonna be much higher than a neutral tone following a fourth tone.
      Edit: And it's not only about pitch. A neutral tone following a third tone is also gonna be louder than a neutral tone following a fourth tone.
      You can check the data at 6:08.

    Very much disagree about your opinion that Chinese vocabulary is not hard to learn. Of course, to you it seems easy and probably you found English vocabulary hard to learn for the same reasons that we find Chinese vocabulary hard to learn. But for us, the reason Chinese vocabulary is harder than other languages is that there are very few common words (e.g. 妈妈) that we can just guess, and even loan words are very different (功夫, 太极, 点心, 卡通, 粉丝) and so while the connection is easy to remember when you know it, for a totally new word it's very hard for English speakers to guess the meaning of a Chinese word. But compared to say French, many more words have similarities with English, even if I've never seen a word before, I can have a guess what it might mean. I've probably got double the study hours in Chinese compared to French, but I can comfortably read a novel in French and might need to look up one word a chapter, but in Chinese I need to look up several per page, in some cases several per paragraph, depending on the material.

    • @VincentBLortie
      @VincentBLortie Před rokem

      I think you're 100% right that for an English speaker it will be easier to learn French vocabulary than Chinese vocabulary, but maybe part of the point here is that what language is harder for you to learn is subjective and depends strongly on what languages you already speak, and Chinese is not inherently more difficult. If ChatGPT's answer is only true for people who's mother tongue is Indo-European, then it's not a complete answer.

  • @jakubgadzala7474
    @jakubgadzala7474 Před rokem

    One could argue that this works both ways. In my opinion, ChatGpt won't be able to teach Chinese to a foreigner in my lifetime. I still have arguably 30+- years to go. Also, your English accent is sometimes hard to understand, and we don't use tones. There is a place for everybody in this situation.
    Edit: Verb usage is essential in every language worldwide. Verbs play a vital role in expressing actions, states, and events. They allow us to convey information about what is happening, who is involved, and when and how actions occur. Without verbs, it would be challenging to communicate effectively and express ideas and experiences. Verbs also help us form tenses, moods, and aspects, enabling us to convey subtle nuances and express complex meanings. In summary, verbs are foundational to language and are crucial for effective communication in any linguistic system.
    Perhaps, you wanted to say that it is vital to pay attention to Chinese way of modyfing parts of speech.
