I have just started learning mandarin a few days ago and honestly the tones were giving me a headache. No video explained why it sounds a certain way, no video explained HOW to produce that sound...however after your video I can positively say, that I went from 0 to 80. BIG BIG HUGE THANK YOU!! ♥♥♥♥♥

I must confess, I only really stumbled across yours and Chris' channels in the last few weeks making my way through all the goodies - this is the first video I've seen of you alone and, speaking only English and it's SO GOOD! you should be so so proud of your work, I'm sure Chris is!! ❤ I've been learning Japanese most of my life, with Chinese constantly tapping on my shoulder...constantly 😂 the intrigue is high. I'm finally taking steps into it and id say that's thanks to Rita's awesome videos and encouragement 👌

跟着 is more common in cantonese, a lot of her mandarin are direct translations from cantonese to mandarin, it's pretty common in Malaysia

The more you listen to native speakers, the more familiar you get with how the language should sound. I watched Mandarin language films growing up all the time (gongfu films) so it was easier for me to reproduce the sounds than most westerners. I just get myself into trouble when I speak it with native speakers because they assume I'm way more fluent than I am, based on my Beijing, putonghua accent lol...

You can get very nitty gritty specific to say this or that is not perfect, because... he claims to be perfect, when he should say fluent as some suggested. BUt it's the idea this white guy can speak your language flawlessly is very... arrogant and clickbaity and makes you want to scrutinize him more for it than if he was being humble. If he had not said such stupid titles, people would be way more impressed with him.

What a wonderful interview and video. This guy is an inspiration for all us language learners! I feel I had a similar arc as him with Spanish and Portuguese, just fully immersing myself in audio materials and hanging out with people that speak those languages. Now I am beginning to improve my Mandarin and it seems like a big hill to climb, but watching your channel and interviews like this keeps me motivated !!

I have never thought that accent really matters but then I recalled that I change back to my regional accent when I talk to friends and family.

I'm always on the hunt for new Chinese content channels, and I really liked this topic! If I were to offer some suggestion, I feel the Chinese text should be bigger and more prominent, since as a foreigner it's easy to build a bad habit of looking for letters first and hanzi second. I use some extensions that help with CZcams's CC subs so it'd be great if those were enabled too.
