- Mandarin Chinese can be tricky to pronounce, being a tonal language with a bunch of strange sounds (to your ears), but at the end of the day, the tones and pronunciations are just muscle memories that can be trained to perceive and produce within 84 days.
Yes, it's possible, because you got an accent coach here who has worked with foreign actors and actresses for years. Daniel Wu and Michelle Yeoh, as well as other actresses and actors in Disney+'s new Mandarin-speaking TV show "American Born Chinese" aka 《西游ABC》 could have spoken even better Mandarin with professional instructions and proper drills, just like how these happy Mandarin learners have achieved in 3 months - ritachinese.com/testimonials
We break down a brilliant Mandarin-speaking scene of "American Born Chinese" and talk about:
00:00-01:59 Daniel Wu's Northern Mandarin accent
02:00-06:19 Sun Weichen's Taiwanese Mandarin accent
06:20-07:57 Daniel Wu's American accent
07:58-09:49 Michelle Yeoh's Hokkien/Cantonese/Malay-accented Mandarin
Patiently waiting for Disney+'s invitation for coaching their Mandarin accents in season 2😎
Btw, improving the accuracy and fluency of your spoken Mandarin Chinese is a totally different process from forming muscle memory for the sounds, as you are putting together the scattered words and sounds in your mind and putting them in a certain linear order that native speakers can understand easily and correctly.
To "think in Chinese" and express yourself without needing to think about the words or the structures, this is the fastest and safest way to reach a much higher level of Chinese proficiency: ritachinese.com/speakinga
Consume authentic Mandarin content, talk about in-depth topics about the modern and historic Chinese world, and use the language like a real 中国通 here: ritachinese.com/speakingc
Anyways, always remember: with Fàn Lǎoshī, Chinese makes perfect sense!

Anyone who's considering this, I definitely recommend the pronunciation course! Even if you have been speaking Mandarin for years, I'll bet you'll have a lot of "Wow, I didn't know that! I'll bet that's why people haven't understood my (whatever) well." moments. And the pronunciation boot camp experience is truly amazing and fun, if you opt for that.
I think Weichen's Taiwanese accent makes him sound younger, as opposed to the monkey king, who sounds more formal and authoritative. So in a way the accent difference works.
Also, for many Taiwanese whose family immigrated from Northern China within the past two generations, this accent difference within the same family is actually quite common. I believe the author of the original book comes from one such family.
I agree that Daniel is the hottest Monkey King!
Thanks for breaking this down. I just started learning a couple weeks ago, and the j/x/q sounds are giving me problems, but this helped clarify some things.
Glad to have this commentary in my mind. I was watching it and I did find it a bit harder to understand (Compared to the Chinese dramas I normally watch ha!). Thanks Rita
I love you Rita!😊
❤️❤️❤️
Mandarin is one of the Asian languages I wanted to learn before, until I saw the writing system 😅
After watching American Born Chinese, I kind of got interested again in learning it but I'm too tired to learn languages now and I'm still not fluent in an Asian language I have been learning for so long.
Where is the full movie?
I bought a month of Disney+, just so I could watch this series. I, too, was surprised by how much mandarin dialogue there was in it.
So basically, we're looking at three different types of Mandarin accents here. Monkey King - Northern-ish accent not perfect obviously, the kid - Taiwanese accent, then Michelle Yeoh - Cantonese/southern-ish accent which is how I normally speak Mandarin as a native Canton speaker myself. But in recent years, I've acquainted with many oversea mainland Chinese students during my time studying at uni in the UK, as a result, my Mandarin accent is slowly becoming more standardised. On the other hand, appearance wise, apparently I don't look southern enough, which has led to many of my fellow Chinese thinking I could speak perfect Mandarin. Hence, they were surprised to learn that Cantonese is actually my first language.
Wow, they got schooled! :D I like the Monkey King's voice anyway... it has a very comfortable and confident quality to it.
I love this show..watched it in one day....
Yeah it's so fun! And it's really interesting to see a story that I'm so familiar with told in a different narrative haha.
Thank you for this video! I wasn’t sure if I just wasn’t familiar enough with accents or not familiar enough with Mandarin in general because I heard 3 totally different accents. Thank you for confirming!
Very good point - How the heck did Sun Wukong end up with a kid? 😅
In the American born chinese book he has alot of wife and children
If you wanna see an absolute atrocity, you should listen to the Spanish in Breaking Bad. I love the show, but they say things so awkwardly and most of the "Spanish-speaking" characters aren't native speakers, and apparently no one off-camera was, either.
weird for an american show right
@@sovietwizard1620 not really, unfortunately
that’s even obvious to non spanish speakers especially when gus speaks its horrendous
@Just me I guess I've met tons of non-Spanish speakers under the impression that gus is a native speaker. Like, when I bring it up, it sometimes surprises people outside of language learning circles.
The grandmaster in Mandarin
For those learning chinese, dun be bother about all these little difference such as shiao or xiao. By the way, shiao/xiao means laugh. It is perfectly ok if u mispronounced one or 2 words.
I have been learning English since 5 years old. 40 years later, I still cannot pronounced tree and three. And u know what?? It is never a problem when I speak English!
Hello fàn老师, can you tell us how to write your Chinese name? 谢谢!!
Of course! It’s 范老师😁
@@RitaChinese Thank you! I almost called you Teacher Rice. Important distinction. PS.: You're the best mandarin phonetics teacher on yt
@@pedrogabrielribeiro8857 hahah Teacher Rice works too😆 Glad you find my content helpful!
八集都看了挺好看的,比花木兰好看😄

Taiwanese accent sounds better
Nit picking a little bit pronounciation and accent its not how to teach foreigner to learn mandarin...its just for local chinese ...
it still entertaining and fun to watch nonetheless
