proof that this was so far ahead of its time, i played this song for my friends and now they have played it non stop for the last week. i love it. i was turned on to these guys when i was 16. im now 47
Over the years, I taught many students this song. I played (and still play) it on my guitar. When I was eleven years old, I had a guitar teacher named, Harriet Williams who was Black and had her PhD in music; her speciality was songs about American History in reference to Slavery, via the Underground Railroad which is what the Drinking Gourd is about...It referred to the Big Dipper, which pointed north...to freedom. The song was a "secret" code as to where the slaves would meet during the night to escape to freedom. Harriet Tubman and Peg Leg Joe made many trips to help free slaves. She also taught us, "Hey Nellie Nellie" which had to do with the Civil War. What she taught me, I taught my own students. †Rest in peace, Harriet Williams.
when i was little my mom used to play this record all the time and we would sing it together all over the house….now 30 some years later i still love it. they were amazing
Wow, what wonderful memories. I got this album for peanuts at a used vinyl store, knowing nothing about J&E other than that the album gave me a good vibe. Now its one of my faves.
I loved Joe and Eddie have all their albums. Do they have DVD's. So beautiful and heartfelt. Sorry for your loss. Do you have the talent too? You know he would be encouraging to use it. God Bless you and your family.
Thank you so much much for uploading the Joe and Eddie songs. When I was 16 there was a cool older girl in the neighborhood who had a Mustang with a tape deck, and she would often play a Joe and Eddie tape. Their voices blended so beautifully.
I use to play J&E's version of The Drinking Gourd and then turn around and Play Richie Haven's version back to back ..so different ...both so wonderful. With the exception of Tiny Shells, I think I love everything they ever recorded. Wish they had a fan club or something...they should be rediscovered...what an art form and what a contribution they made to gospel folk...and they were a breakout duo given the time they reached their popularity. I wonder if anyone has done a book on them. Ought to!
+Judi Adams As much as Tiny Shells ISN'T my favorite of theirs, I cant' help getting it stuck in my head everytime I see my C&H sugar cannister... LOL.
The Drinking Gourd was the Big Dipper constellation which includes the North Star. When enslaved slaves escaped from southern plantations they were told to follow the Drinking Gourd to find their way to the North where they would be safe.
Joe & Eddie's Guitarist and music director, Bill Munday and I regularly jammed at the old student "quad" at San Jose City College back in the 60's, along with Mike Fisher and Rory Condon, just as Bill got going with Joe & Eddie. Unfortunately, I lost track of those guys in the early 70's, but I still have a lot of fond memories of those days. Jon www.jonbartz.com

Wish someone would put up a Joe and Eddie Facebook page. If it's there, I can't find it. Love everything they did.
Judi Adams Joe & Eddie now on Facebook
There should be a Facebook link under their song.
I checked...under the song there is a "SHARE" button, if you press that you'll see the icon for Facebook. I just shared it, and you can too.
