I am Japanese and I think Shinjuku is the best place to book a hotel in Tokyo. It is convenient to go anywhere by train.

my family have had our annual vacation based around Tokyo for 5 years prior to 2020 and one of the most enjoyable areas to stay in was actually Yokohama as opposed to Tokyo itself. Short travel trips into Tokyo and the super chill vibe made it perfect for us, 2 adults and 2 kids below 12.

I am always so amazed by the fact how much you know about Tokyo in every subject matter. I lived there until 1972, and you know so much more than I remember. Naturally too much of my memory is so archaic after 50-some years and 100-folds of growth/changes. Your information is well appreciated every time I go back for a visit. Thank you!!

For me it's Ueno. one of the first stops for airport express trains from Narita, on the Yamanote line, Shinkansen access for when you want to venture out of the city, walking distance to Akiba and Asakusa, Ameyoko, and half a dozen national museums clustered around the east/northeast of the park.

Last time I was there I stayed in "Tosei Hotel Cocone Ueno Okachimachi" which is right next to Okachimachi station (the stop between Ueno and Akihabara, making both within easy walking distance) decent budget hotel with a great view of the Skytree from the higher floors, I would definitely stay there again. There's also several APA hotels spread around the area.

Nice video, enjoy them all, thanks. A lot of helpful info. I agree with a ton of what you say here, especially the idea of splitting/going to two different places of the city, that is what I did in a few places, and also on my first and only time in Tokyo (Shinjuku/Ginza) to get very different takes on the same city. I do have to say I see Ginza slightly different than you do, and it would be in my top 10. I found it convenient, close to a lot of things, great restaurants and places, a bit less crowded and not necessarily more expensive, in my experience at least. (Stayed at Gracery Ginza). Anyway, sharing in case it helps anyone.

I stayed in an old merchant-home-turned-hostel (Guesthouse Toco) in Yanaka on my last trip. I think that was probably my favourite location out of the 3 I've tried (also Akihabara and Asakusa). It's a surprisingly quiet part of town considering it's within walking distance of Ueno Station. Not necessarily the most jam-packed area in terms of sights but still a lot of quaint museums/shops/cafes scattered around the neighbourhood that don't seem to have much tourist attention.

When I went with my family in 2019 we stayed in Nihombashi Kayabacho. 2 stops down from Tokyo Station by the Metro so you can't use the JR Pass for it. John did a livestream in that area a while back. It was cheaper than the areas closer to the main circle line. We were there the weekend of Emperor Recognition day so all of the hotels were more expensive.

For a treat we got a great deal on a couple of nights at the Cerulean in Shibuya. It was gorgeous.

On my first trip to Tokyo, I stayed in Shinjuku and Asakusa. While it was convenient to stay in Shinjuku since it connects to anywhere you want to go, it was a nightmare to navigate Shinjuku station.
I loved staying in Asakusa even though Asakusa was further away. It was so peaceful in the early morning hours. Sensoji is so different without the crowds. I loved staying close to the Ginza line. It got everywhere I wanted to go.
I'm going back to Japan next month and I'm debating whether I should stay in Asakusa/Sumida for my first few days in Tokyo or stay closer to the JR line since I'm planning on heading west using the JR pass.
There's so much to see in Tokyo that I don't feel like I'm missing out wherever I choose to stay. Even the train rides are an attraction on their own 😅

Akasaka is a great place to stay, lots of places to eat and drink! Also is super close to other big areas from what I can remember. I stayed there in 2019 at the New Otani Hotel and that was really nice and was close to the train station (literally 1 min walk from the hotel doors).
Also, a bit of an outside choice if you want something different but Odaiba is also very unique, shopping malls really close by and is a very cool place! Also can get the yurikamome line to shimbashi really easily and only takes about 15 mins.

Whenever we visit Tokyo, we always stay at Asakusabashi (2 stations away from Asakusa via subway, 1 station away from Akihabara)..because it both has a subway and a JR Line, and the Narita line also runs on it..very convenient and a little laid back.

This was a great idea for a video. When on business we’d spend the last day in Tokyo before flying back and we’d stay at the Prince in Shinagawa. From all the areas in Tokyo we stayed (2 adults), I would rank them like this: 1. Hotel Niwa Tokyo in Suidobashi, 2. Mitsui Garden Hotel Shiodome Italia-gai, 3. Grand Prince Hotel Shin Takanawa, 4. Hotel Metropolitan Edmont Tokyo , 5. Daiwa Roynet Hotel Ikebukuro Higashiguchi - Have to say Ikebukuro was out least favourite location, Suidobashi and Takanawa were out favourites. Next we plan to stay in Akasaka or Asakusa... Hope Japan opens up fully soon!

Very good advice about the Sobu line. Definitely underrated for budget travel and easy access to the train into the heart of central Tokyo. When I was a tourist (now resident), I usually stayed around Shinagawa and Hammatsucho when in Tokyo. I used to come during off peak season and never payed more than $65/night. Didn't require a big room as I packed light and packing light was the way to go for Japan. Plus easy to access the airport trains from there.
When it comes to Tokyo charm, I like Kita Senju, Nakano, and Yurakucho.
But I wouldn't overlook Kanagawa either. Especially if you have an international driver's license. Nice driving areas to explore and the coastal regions are mostly local.

JAL City(Haneda) is a short walk from the airport monorail and quite convenient to get to the Yamanote Line and it's a beautiful ride in the city with about 15 stops along the way. I stayed at the Hilton in the Disney/Maihama area at the end of my 3 week trip. So much space for all our luggage and things we picked up while shopping. It was super easy to get to Narita - bus straight from the hotel so we didn't have to worry about lugging all our stuff on the trains. My only complaint was I couldn't use the onsen or pool because I have a tattoo.

Another option is to stay in historic beautiful Kamakura. It’s only 1 hr south of Tokyo & used to be the capital of Japan. There are loads of temples & shrines to visit and some of the best sandy beaches in Japan. Sacred island of Enoshima is nearby & you can sometimes see Mt Fuji from there. Plus lots of hiking trails. We stayed in Saitama near the Nanasato station on the Tokyo Urban Park Line 4 stops from Omiya. People were calling it the New Jersey of Japan. We got to walk through amazing alleyways for 20 minutes to the train every day. We walked past somebody’s large, personal bamboo grove in their front yard, and once saw a guy come out and harvest some shoots. Things were cheap, and we got to see a part of the city most people don’t get to see. It was quiet, and a super great experience commuting to Tokyo to see tourist stuffs.,
We think if we can go to Japan again we might like to stay in Kichijoji. We visited last time and really liked the cafes. Went to a highly-ranked bakery which was incredible. Also went to an off-the-wall izakaya where I challenged one of the guys on staff in making Japanese rolled omelette.

Reasonably priced and has a decent gym space. There is also a like mall directly across from the hotel that had a great yakiniku place. Not sure if it is still there but we loved it. We plan to stay there again in December if the border fully opens.

We came in Feb 2020, just before the covid shut down, we stayed in Ikebukero because our son lived in Higashi Kurume at the time, and so he told us it would be convenient since the train station was there and we were able to really get around Tokyo and see everything we wanted and like you said, Ikebukero is a destination in itself. It has everything, shopping, food and all that Japan is uniquely known for. We stayed at a very small business hotel called Hotel Grand City which was great, clean, and close to Sunshine City mall It was small, but we were only in the room to sleep, so it really wasn't bad. Then at the end of our stay we stayed at the Hilton at Tokyo Disneyland, and I highly recommend staying there. It was a great way to end the trip! Sadly our tip was cut short because of covid and everything closed down, so we just went home. I hope we can come and visit Japan again in the future. Our son still lives there.

I'm paying my very first visit to Japan next spring, planning to do a week in Tokyo, then go to Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima but I am open to suggestions for other places. I have 3 weeks to spend in Japan and I'm so damn excited that it's finally happening, I've waited so long for this opportunity.

Honestly I don't think you'll have time for any place more if you're going to all those places. Also consider travel time between those places. We spent 3 weeks in Japan but went the opposite way, Osaka> Kyoto> Hakone> Tokyo. We spent a week in Osaka and Tokyo. 4 days in Kyoto and Hakone. Also consider the jet lag if you're coming from America. It's rough!!! Also good walking shoes and at least a small backpack, and packable bag, to carry essentials.

You should freeze a picture of that transit map and take a digital pen and cross off every city you visited on your tours around the country I don't know why I find myself watching this because I don't plan on going back to Japan for about 2 years but just in case I win the lottery tonight and decide to come back next week at least I'll know how to get around keep up the good work John hope you and the family are well

I have largely stayed in Kabukicho because it is close to Shinjuku Station and generally has inexpensive hotels, though my last trip I stayed in Kanda.
My stay in Tokyo next May will be at Shimbashi. It's close enough to Tokyo and Shinagawa stations.
Mind you that's at the end of a six-week trip that's taking me to Kyushu, Kobe, Kyoto, Kanazawa, Sendai, Hakodate, Aomori, Akita, Yamanashi, and hopefully Kamikochi.

In Tokyo I stay closed to JR line as I used JR /Shinkansen a lot ( tourist subsidies price ) to travel both local and long distance . Ueno is my prefer area to stay .

Lots to recommend from years of travel, living, and study. Sadly some recommended and loved places went bust due to the couple years of close down… but fortunately plenty of places have survived.
Caution: Check size of room AND be sure it is a room not a capsule, unless a capsule experience is desired. It is cool to have that experience, once.
Depending on budget people might want to stay close to train lines and switch around for experience.
If people like the city, and have a good budget, Shinjuku and/or Shibuya. On a budget, with easy access: Ikebukuro. Ueno if doing museum and university tours. Also Yotsuya for university and area tours. Akuhabara for electronics. Ochanomizu for university tours and to startexploring around city. Shinagawa or Tamachi/Hamamatsu cho is convenient to Haneda airport for slightly higher budget. Ryogoku area is near museums, onsens, sumo, and easy to get around. Iidabashi and Ichgaya or Kagurazska are worth looking into.
Chiba area is cheaper for the value, though not cheap for people on tight budgets … and taxi is generally recommended from the nearest station if around Disney….at least when first arriving in Japan.
Used to live in Shitamachi. Lots of backpacker and dorm options. It is a little adventure.

My guess as to where the best places to stay in Tokyo are primary hub stations on the Yamanote Line (namely Ueno, Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, (cycle repeats)), secondary hub stations outside of the Yamanote Line (namely Asakusa, Oshiage/Skytree, Higashi-Ginza, Kitasenju, Shin-Kiba, Oimachi, Kamata, Kawasaki, Musashi-Kosugi, Nerima, Oji, and Akabane), and secondary hub stations on the Yamanote Line (namely Akihabara, Yurakucho/Ginza, Shimbashi/Shiodome, Hamamatsucho/Daimon, Tamachi/Mita, Gotanda, Meguro, Takadanobaba, Otsuka/Otsukaekimae, Nippori Station, (cycle repeats)). In Japan, travel revolves around the train, being the most infamous in the world, and there is no exception to that besides walking.

We stayed at the Prince hotel next to Tokyo tower. It was great location but the hotel was so warm in the middle of winter and there was no central air we had to open a window to let in cool air at night.

My partner used to live in Minowa near Ueno Station. I used to focus on Shinjuku but once I stayed in Ueno I prefer there. Less crazy and crowded but still central, esp if in a hotel next to the station. Going next month and starting in a beautiful hotel in Asakusa that is pretty new. $70 a night. I guess one advantage of tourism still technically banned.

I just came back from a week in Tokyo and in hindsight this video was very insightful! First half of my stay in stayed in Kuramae (near Asakusa) at Nui Hostel. Kuramae was great for transport links (Oedo and Asakusa line) but also in walking distance of major sights like Asakusa and Oshiage (Skytree), really great neighborhoods that felt like the best of both worlds. I then went on to stay in between Shibuya and Ebisu (Mustard hotel) and found the area to be a tad too noisy and touristy, however good transport links and close to cool neighborhoods like Shimokitazawa, Daikanyama, Nakameguro etc. However staying on the east side of Tokyo was definitely the highlight of my stay! 😁

Im planning a trip to japan in early 2023 and booked 9 nights in shinagawa for only 300 USD. Comparing it to a 6 night stay I did in tawaramachi in 2020 i think its pretty cheap. The room in shinagawa is 18m2 with a sea view over odaiba.

The capsule hotel I stayed in Asakusa previously is definitely gone, I noticed it in your previous Asakusa live stream. I think as a tourist, Asakusa is usually a good budget option, but you can also try Meguro (which I discovered when I visited an expat friend on my previous trip that it's such an underrated place.). The first time I visited we got an airbnb on the west side in Suginami (this was before the minpaku and minshuku laws went into effect), which is quite peaceful but a little far out but close to Ghibli and also Nakano. I'm a budget traveler but there's nothing wrong in staying in a business hotel or normal hotel if you can afford it though.
06:44 When people see Ryougoku , they just think about Sumo Wrestling, but it's also next to the Edo Tokyo Museum.
07:50 Shiodome/Shimbashi also connects to the Yurikamome monorail to Odaiba.
13:40 Asakusa retains that Shitamachi vibe. Top place inside the city!
    23:30 Kuramae!
