One of the most underrated songs of all time. Saw the Dears recently (before the pandemic) and they still sound amazing! PS No Cities Left lovers should check out some of their new stuff - I Used To Pray For The Heavens to Fall is like Lost in the Plot on steroids!
A band who will always be etched in my memory banks to eternity, not that I followed them obsessively, but somehow, this delicious tune, as heartwrenchingly doom-laden as it may be be, lyrically, somehow manages to redefine the whole notion of poignancy!
I have never cried in anybody's arms The way that I have often cried in yours Please be the one to take my tears away I was 22, I've had my share of views I just can't take that happiness from you Still I'll be the one to take your tears away I can't believe the things you say I can't believe the things you say Tell me, tell me, tell me the lies I can't believe the things you say I can't believe the things you say Tell me, tell me, tell me the lies Fasting love will lead us all to nowhere When, when will we learn? I shall avenge the death of all the romance Until, until I'm gone I can't believe the things you say I can't believe the things you say Tell me, tell me, tell me the lies I can't believe the things you say I can't believe the things you say Tell me, tell me, tell me the lies Tell me the lies Tell me the lies Tell me the lies
My dad showed me this when I was still a little girl, I'd say 6-7 ish. I used to listen to it all the time, I'd sing it on the swings in the back garden, I loved the animation, but I never memorized the name. Now, at 15, my sister told me to turn of the music I was listening to because she was going to destroy my emotions with a song. I asked her how and she replied with "22-Death of all the romance" And I looked at her in confusion then she almost yelled "You don't remember?!" I shook my head and she played it. I then screeched "I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOR YEARS! I FORGOT THE NAME AHHH" and I've been listening to it on repeat for the past half hour, singing along like I used to on the swings and fuck I'm almost crying. It's so powerful, sorrowful and just completely desperate and begging. hhhh
I think the song you're thinking of is called "Le Pauvre Chanteur de la Rive Sud." It came out on a compilation for Grenadine Records and featured Murray and another singer named Alex Olsen.
This video is just so touching. The lyrics make me think of a boyfriend I just couldn't let go of and boy did he lie but because I didn't think I could meet anyone better I decided I preferred the lies...sad really. Glad I grew up.
I first heard this song when I was about 12/13 and I'm going to be 22 soon, it is such a weird feeling thinking back. I used to just love the music and the singing but now more then ever do I finally understand the lyrics.
15 years ago I was in my dad’s car listening to this song he was a big fan of the dears he went to their concerts this song reminds me of all those times being in the car listening to this song. I’m 18 now but I’ll always remember this song.
This is both the best video I've ever seen and the saddest video I've ever seen. I cannot watch this or I cry. The song, coupled with the video just cuts to my soul. Weird, how this brings so much more emotion to me than big world tragedy or even a family member passing.
it's the most perfectly depressing song whenever you're in a bad mood. The Dears always sound like they actually care when they sing. Really great song. One of my all-time-favorites.
I saw the music video for this on tv once when I was 5, and loved it so much that i remembered most of it clearly. I'm 18 now and just found it for the first time!!
The band in which my sister and his husband were did a cover of this song, 12 years ago. I was only 6, I totally forgot it after the band split up, 9 years ago. This band was my main inspiration to listen and to play music, and seeing splitting up destroyed me and put me in tears during days. I'm now playing in their new band, we're only 4 and I'm the violonist. Coming back from the Shop with him today, he made me listen to this song, 12 years after. I cried. It reminds me so much souvenirs of my childhood, my best moments, their first band... This song have it all. And it have me, too.
Tüm yalnızlığım ve sevdalarımla yazıyorum. Kelimelere sığdıramıyor. Kendim bile küçük kalıyorum bu şarkının hissettirdiklerinde. Ölüyorum, inanamıyorum. Bilmiyorum. Sevdiceğimin kalp atışlarını duyana kadar dinlediğim en güzel şarkı.
I saw them live in amoeba some years back. I think I was 15. They were so nice I took pictures with them and they signed my cd. I don't have either now. Too bad I've lost all of the above now. But still good memories to have :)
Gotta love a video posted years ago that still pulls new views and pulls people that feel in love with it years ago back. This video is great. Song has gotta be timeless. We'll see.
Omg didnt know this song was that old, I'm about to finish my year 22 and it makes me feel a little weird about all expectations about love, the 90 kids, now facing the real shit of life
I played at a charity concert and I played the guitar and sand this song. The part where I sang "I can't believe the things she said" where it goes up an octave, my voice properly cracked and the crowd started howling like dogs. It was hilarious.
It's so exciting to see that The Dears are still making art and music like this 20 years after their inception. Their new animated lyric video for "I Used To Pray For The Heavens To Fall" really invokes a similar vibe. So glad they're still making beautiful new music :) Hopefully we won't have to wait another 4 years for a new album!!
It's 2024 and I never got tired listening to this masterpiece
Yeah great song, can't believe this video is 18 years old! 😂
Years have passed and this song is still hauntigly terrific. Timeless state of the art
still.

Meh. Think their first and second album is better than their new stuff, energetically and by their boldness.
A band who will always be etched in my memory banks to eternity, not that I followed them obsessively, but somehow, this delicious tune, as heartwrenchingly doom-laden as it may be be, lyrically, somehow manages to redefine the whole notion of poignancy!

I remember watching this like 12-13 years ago on my ipod touch. Didn't even have a CZcams account since the app had history without account. The times

Last encore last night in Manchester, my eyes may have leaked a bit, just gorgeous, phenomenal gig the band were even more on fire than usual.
