I think it got lost that the title of Charli XCX new release “brat and it's the same but there's three more songs so it's not” is pretty self referential to this moment of the music industry. In that way, Charli manages to turn it into a statement that follows the aesthetic of “brat”.
Look up Howlin Wolf's the Howlin Wolf Album, pretty sure Charli's referencing his artwork. The label forced him to put out an album he didn't like so he used the cover art to protest the label.

It’s especially frustrating because Taylor’s at a stage in her career where she no longer needs hits, so she should be making the most interesting music of her career. But ever since Folklore and Evermore she’s become stagnant to the point of parody. Her songwriting on TTPD and even Midnights wasn’t as strong as previous records. Meanwhile her colleagues are all making objectively better music than she is and yet I’m supposed to accept that their songs and albums aren’t as worthy of that number one spot as Taylor? Be serious.
Midnights was the first album for me she written not being authentic. What I mean is she wrote Folklore/Evermore as a creative outlet with no regards to outside influences. Then those albums didn’t exactly do well due to Lover’s success. Now she has returned to making pop cause that’s the only genre that caters to a wider audience

complete agree, but no one deserves a number 1 - they earn it buy selling more. Taylor's selling power is reflective of her legacy as an artist. Other artists just don't have the legacy. SZA managed to get a number 1 over Midnights because people were willing to buy the album. Brat and hmhas were both brilliant albums, but neither have Taylor's selling power. The fact that a last minute drop of 1 single voice note can make Taylor sell more says more about demand for artistry.
Taylor has the edge of being in the middle of a massive stadium tour. That's certainly helps keep her numbers up.

I agree with this, mainly, but do you think it's at all possible Taylor just told her merch/distribution team to go all out with the variants in order to keep her at the top of the charts? In a way, that would put her at fault too, but I doubt she's making every single one of these calculated sales decisions herself when she's in the middle of a world tour right now. Meaning, she's probably not trying to target artists like Billie and Charli personally, but her 'blocking' them on the charts is an unfortunate byproduct of Taylor and her team wanting to keep her album at #1 as long as possible.

Honestly Jack Antonoff is such a bum for continually producing the same album when he should be making a new Bleachers record. Sucks that music is once again stifled by blatant greed.
She just needs to pick Dessner and stick with him. Antonoff comes off as a failed mid 2010s indie artist who's been carrying a watered down form of the 00s and 10s indie rock sound into his production for about a decade now. I'm just tired, man.
Jack Antonoff has alot of potential, and the recent Nardwuar interview showed that. But I do feel like Taylor should find new producers that would make her music a bit more energetic or just interesting, but Jack Antonoff is a good producer, that just should work with other artists.

This trend reminds me a lot of what happened with CD singles where you’d release 5 different versions of the same song with slightly altered track lists to try and boost their position in the charts through collectible appeal (Björk circa Post is a great example of this). If you want *everything*, even if it’s not that great, you have to buy another unit.

I wanted to check this, so I compared the variants of Billie Eilish's "Hit Me Hard And Soft" to Taylor Swift's "The Tortured Poets Department".
Eilish's latest album has been released in 24 variants, Swift's in 60 variants (both numbers according to Discogs).
Some of the variants only differ in regards to the region they have been released in (e.g., releases in Japan, Northern America, Europe, Australia - the publishers are different, so that counts as different releases).
As far as I understand, most variants are meant to be sold as 'collector's items'.
The difference between the respective 'collector's items' might be small - that's why they might be seen as greed, not as art.
What I want to say is: Since there are so many more Swift variants than Eilish variants (2,5 times as many), Taylor Swift might be regarded as greedier than Billie Eilish.
Billie Eilish's 24 variants are too much for me and already look somewhat greedy, 60(!) variants are greedy overkill.

Sadly its the only loophole artists found in the streaming era. Albums and touring is what bring artists money, not streams. So it kinda make sense that they resorted to that in an era where selling CDs is more difficult.

You can’t call it “Show business” if you take the “Business” out of it. That’s the drying force of capitalism. And she’s doing a good job in her business. Now don’t get me wrong, I haven’t purchased a single physical copy of this album of hers. I heard a few good songs from it and that’s it.
More than anything else, you can’t tell an A student to lower their performance just so others could shine. The only way to go is to do better. Again, that’s what capitalism is about. If you don’t like capitalism, then there’s another variant of it called communism where these business strategies don’t exist.

Bit late to this. But I do live in England and Swift is touring here at the moment as she has been doing for the past couple of weeks in the UK. I would think the UK version of her album was dropped to coincide with the tour rather than be 'petty' to Charli.

It's because people *RECOGNIZE SHE HAS TALENT* that her unwillingness to truly go outside her comfort zone now that she's so wealthy that she lives an entirely different existence to people like us that's drawing the criticism. Your life and family are forever set. You no longer have the worries and concerns of even contemporary artists, let along the average person. Take advantage of that. Andre 3000 finally dropped a new project and the shit was *wildly* different from anything he had put his hands on before. Someone with his kind of legendary status within his genre spoke to that fear of the art you want to make not resonating with the legacy you made for yourself, then released something wildly experimental anyway. Whether it succeeds commercially or not he'll never have that voice in the back of his head making him feel bad for not trying. People want Taylor to be that kind of artist.

i know swifties who HATE this album, while personally feel like the writings and the metaphors on it are fantastic. the base version is better than the anthology because of some things, but the title track needs work and there is cringe that goes along with it. i’m a critique and i haven’t full dived in to this album yet because it’s still new, but i really enjoyed it and like most of the songs! i’m not brain dead though, have your own opinion. Tell me why i’m wrong, i could not care less.

Ok, hear me out but I don't think that there is a problem with these variants? She usually only does 2 album variants. One normal album + A couple of added songs. She did this one differently because this is a DOUBLE ALBUM so of course she is going to put out many variations for this album. Second these variations are just mostly variations of album covers. She has separate vinyl's for separate songs but all together, these are the same songs just a different album cover, so I don't see what's wrong either. She isn't trying to make a collectables, etc. She has different vinyl's for different interests. Kind of sad how so many people dedicate their lives to pull one woman down. Like if this was someone else, they wont care a single bit. She nor her fans are disturbing you in anyway. Some of her "fans" are absolute monsters, but you can't look at one person and go, "yeah all of them are crazy".
I’m really hoping Billboard will step up and disqualify most variants from being counted towards charting numbers because this is insane. They put restrictions for bundles in 2020 (until they allowed certain bundles again last year…) and I’m really hoping they do it something similar now.
All they have to do is not count subsequent releases. Only the original release should count for the charts.
But all these artist say they don't care about the charts, taylor does, so why are people complaining?

Taylor Swift was kind of playing the Eras Tour in the UK like a week later and they probably asked her to release some exclusives in the UK to go along with that. I think people are looking too deep into this. Also the UK Eras Tour is her biggest tour dates with the most shows on her European leg of the tour so of course she releases an exclusive for the fans there.

I don't think she's the one doing all of this atm but I also don't gaf about charts. I can't fathom being annoyed on an artist's behalf like this in general and maybe that's a me problem, I'm generally detached from these things
