“There’s a difference between enjoying Taylor's albums for their music and their performances and their narratives, or enjoying them because you're deeply entrenched in the Taylor-verse and your obsessively combing through the lyrics on each song like the convoluted plot of the 30th marvel sequel”
Bingo
And the Taylor-verse was a marketing tactic deliberately cultivated. It goes to show you how the corporate music industry compromises authenticity for marketability.
This is literally where I am as the husband of a day-one Swiftie (although in her defense she's feeling the degradation in musicality too)

My problem with Taylor is that her older music is written better and more mature than everything she releases now.
the thing is, she is so up and down. red and 1989 were really good but then she made reputation and lover which did not measure up. folklore and evermore came after those, which is where she peaked creatively imo, both were great but now these last two albums aren’t nearly as good. i mean poets is especially awful and feels even more regressive than midnights

Great point about this album feeling like a 30th marvel sequel. As a Taylor fan but not a marvel fan this really helped me understand how regular people probably feel about this album and other taylor swift lore/works lately. Even as a fan I didn't love this album. If anything I caught myself trying to untangle who the songs are about because they were so dull on their own that i quickly switched to their pop-cultural value instead of their artistic value. it's a shame but taylor has a history of self correcting and i hope thats what she'll do after this album cycle. fingers crossed
It really is the perfect comparison. It's the Eternals of Taylor swift albums.

It was actually Aaron dessner and I like the songs he did
@@Lulu-pi2qp I swear if she just released these as two separate albums at the same time people would have a completely different reaction and would probably be praising both. But even then “Jack’s” album is just as solid as “Dressner’s”. I’m enjoying this album so I don’t really care about the ppl who don’t like it , just curious. I’ve seen reactions where either lyrics just fly over their heads , or they don’t get what Taylor was doing in the song (who’s afraid of little old me etc).
I feel like she painted the emotions she wanted to portray perfectly clear in her songs.
@@Lulu-pi2qp I understand the reaction because I had some similar thoughts after one time through. I’ve seen a lot of people say they can’t put their finger on this record and I couldn’t either at first but TTPD is a slow-burn, intentionally I believe. This isn’t meant to captivate you with production-she wants the lyrics to marinate over time to fully appreciate what she’s doing, hence the album title.

The swifties are already starting with the "you're not intelligent enough to understand her lyrics" argument. dear god
I interpreted the tone differently than he did on a handful of songs (I thought who’s afraid of a little old me was satirical & sarcastic rather than narcissistic) and I thought the alchemy was a love song about Travis (it’s filled with football word plays), but I don’t think it’s an intelligence thing, I think we just have different interpretations! I do sometimes think people are less kind to female artists bc they’re unintentionally skewed my sexist stereotypes to think a woman is being narcissistic before she’s being sarcastic & making a joke, so I think there is some valid frustration from people in regards to that.
@@haleynicole5940this!! i think some young swifties do everyone a disservice by acting taylor is too genius for others. but at the same time there’s no way people really think taylor is being serious in most of the lyrics they critique. the title itself is mocking herself and her ex partner, the grand theft auto line is supposed to funny not sexy, and who’s afraid is clearly satire. i don’t understand why people think it’s more likely that she’s being dead serious when saying something obviously out of pocket than that she’s making fun of herself? she literally sounds on the verge of laughter in the gta line. this reminds me of when she put out blank space and people who didn’t like her were like she finally understands she’s crazy!! like.. how could u be more clear
its true
@@haleynicole5940stuff can be two things. And I think you’re right: people are harder on Swift because she’s making music predominately for other women. We have a history of not taking any female artists seriously that don’t play to the male gaze.
With all that said: I don’t really buy into the “actually it’s satire” angle because if that’s the case-then it’s not compelling satire. There really isn’t much here that says anything that Swift hasn’t already said in her bother, arguably better, albums. Sure I think there are people who are dumping on this album because it’s Taylor Swift, but I think even people who are casually into her (like I am) are starting to get weary.

As a big Taylor fan I agree with every point. I was so disappointed. Even with the songs that are decent like loml have a weird cringy lyric inserted in there like “Mr. Steal your girl” that completely takes me out of it. Folklore and evermore are my favorites from her and I keep going back to them time and time again. I’m worried at this point that her fantastic writing in those records were an anomaly for that point in her career.
Red is one her best albums while I don’t like 1989 and Reputation. Her music is hit or miss, not steadily declining.
@@blackishboi3895 I agree! I actually love 1989 and think it’s a nearly perfect pop album. Folklore and Evermore were a culmination of all the good parts of her previous albums and sounded mature and fresh. I think the quality has been declining ever since with Midnights and TTPD in my opinion.

I feel like Taylor is living every artist's dream. No matter what she puts out, she's built such a huge fandom, that it's gonna be a success and people are gonna be happy. What's a lukewarm 7/10 at best, for casual listeners, it's easily a 9/10 for a swiftie.
This is sadly true. I felt Midnights itself was pretty mid and have seen some people argue that that album winning AOTY at the grammys would lead to more subpar artistry from her….and this album shows that that was pretty much true.
But yeah, no one dares to say otherwise for fear of the wrath of her fanbase
@@MrTentaclesHasAllTheTalent "No one dares to say otherwise for fear of the wrath of her fanbase" it's just not true... Many people HATED this album and they've been very vocal about it, reviews are mixed and she's getting less love and a lot more criticism than she did on midnights...
@@diarysawan that’s actually good to know that people are more critical. I guess I haven’t been seeing much of the critical reviews of late apart from this video

I think Taylor Swift fans are actually much more understanding than others, but they def do have a high perception of her. My english teacher is a huge swiftie and I was talking to her about it and telling her about how i didn't love it, but she said she listened to it all weekend and have been replaying every song. It's so strange how subjective music can be.
I am SO glad you mentioned the metaphor thing. I have been saying this since at least the 1989 vault tracks: interrupting one bad metaphor with another and then cutting in a random word you find pretty doesn't equate to good song writing
Totally agree, metaphor and reference made the success and the failure of her songs. recently. I saw people in some chinese music platforms criticizing her new releases being not catchy at all and fans were enthusiastically defending her that her lyrics required close study for all the reference and meanwhile blaming whoever post that comment illiterate and being poor at English....Oh cmon, you don't even need a degree to love a song like " beat it" because even kids will sing and dance along with the song😢
For most people, those mistakes get culled in the editing phase. But as others have said, this album felt rushed, underedited and underdeveloped.

Thanks for the honest and inciteful review. It seems like some long-time Taylor fans just don't want to hurt her feelings or something because it's been hard to find true reactions to the actual material. As a newer and more mature (in age) Taylor fan, I also thought the same... that this album has very similar sounds to her last few albums. (even though I really did like folklore, evermore and Midnights) I'm thinking that maybe since she had said that "she'd written so much tortured poetry" in the last two years that she just needed to purge it all and then move on. Hopefully she'll take some time off after the finish of her tour and refresh and renew herself. I'm sure she truly needs that!
This is interesting to me, because I absolutely love this album. However there are some real real low points on it, sonically it’s not pushing any boundaries, there are some gosh awful lines and clunky metaphors. It’s these songs that I skip, but the songs I have whittled the album down too for me I really love. I think it’s fair for me to both really like the album and also find that there are a lot of criticisms I can levy towards it.
That being said I personally cannot fathom how midnigjts was received so much better when in my opinion it’s far inferior, with way more surface level clunky writing , clearly geared towards getting virality ( minus a few songs that are objectively great and most of the 3am edition songs , Paris excluded because wtf was that song)
I'm sorry, why would Taylor need to constantly reinvent her sound when no other major artists do? Plus, she already made country, pop, and indie records and won major awards in all the genres, and yet you people still want more.
Taylor needs to stop working with Jack Antonoff 🗣️
You nailed my thoughts on this record. The first time listening through this I immediately thought, "Taylor and Jack are more friends than collaborators now... and he can't give her constructive criticism". This album is just so shockingly underbaked that I keep relistening to see if I missed something.
Yes, this distills my thoughts exactly. It's the actual break up that needs to happen.
Especially compared to the second disc, where she collaborated with Dessner mainly, and not Jack.
Yes but also the other way around where she apparantly hasn't once said "maybe midnights' 15 tracks of identical production were enough"
nah jack just sucks now
Yes this!! Said the same thing!!
I don't mind about her being so popular and succesful, but when I see grown women talk about her songwriting like she's fionna apple or something I really burn inside
Then again, maybe a singer who CAN'T SING shouldn't be popular and successful.
Or adrianne lenker
I mean, I think their songwriting does very different things. I didn’t like this album either, but I think both folklore and evermore are both 9s and albums like lover are just full of extremely well written pop tunes
she cunningly got her catalogue back on tiktok in time for this when others on the label remain banished
@@satelliteimagerymusicyeah Anthony giving evermore a light 7 is still a tragedy. It deserved a higher score.
Her other albums are more rightfully criticized, but the folklore/evermore series is just solid folk/indie pop, where her lyrics are more clever than dumbed down direct references to things.
The new album is not creative as Taylor has been in past. She wrote some amazing melodies and catchy songs. I just listened to "Speak now", and "Fearless" - as well as other songs. She also needs to change the type of sad, slow songs about breaking up with guys and maybe start expand her thinking about other things that are going on in the world. I know its about her, but she needs to think about her fans.
With how successful her Eras tour has been so far and the success of all the albums she put out before that, despite the criticism on her personal life (private jet, Healy, and the NFL guy relationships), you'd think she'd pivot this album to a more fun one where her success in life would bleed through.
Agree 100% She needs a break, and her next album needs to be different and refreshing. Otherwise, She will probably fade out at least for a while. At this point, she can retire very comfortably, but she loves to write, so I doubt she'll stop writing, even after her popularity dies down. Will be interesting to see how her career plays out because her whole music career has been a bit of an enigma. 😊
honestly, regardless of the quality of the songs themselves, the thing which frustrates me most with Swift atm is the complete disregard for the album format itself. since Billie Eilish announced she was releasing an album which had to be listened to as a cohesive body of work (gasp!! you mean.. an album?), i realised that the album format was in dire straits in the mainstream. 31 songs, with no interlude tracks, and hardly any instrumental moments within the tracks themselves, no apparent editing to create a cohesive story or soundscape - it reads as 31 stream opportunities rather than a 31-track record. it's frustrating to see someone who has genuine writing prowess put no effort into structuring a body of work and make it actually listenable. anyone who managed to listen to the full 31 songs in one go has my respect - i couldn't do it
I blame Drake
this has never been taylor’s mo though, so this doesnt come as a surprise. she has always prioritized sonic cohesion over a narrative arc in her albums, especially after red was criticized for being so sonically chaotic. i would argue that despite ttpd’s production pitfalls, of which there are many and some you mention, it is sonically cohesive. but every song of her’s is self contained with their own introduction, plot, conclusion. the only time she breaks this is on folklore. so i dont think this is a byproduct of the streaming era, i think its just taylor. some people dig it, some dont.
Why would you listen to it in full tho??? it's supposed to be a double album regardless of how it is released. Listen to the first part, carry on with your life, listen to the second part, and go live.
Even as a fan, I will not sit down and listen to a 31-track album.
@@hannahx5821 sorry, i probably miscommunicated that. it deffo doesn't need to have a narrative arc, i was just listing things she could have done to make the double album feel like a listenable project instead of 31 streaming opportunities. i'm talking specifically about the full double album here, not the original edition. for the og, i'd agree - it isn't great, but it is sonically cohesive. my issue is that the 'double album' thing just feels like there was no mind to making it a fully listenable project, and that it was rather just 'i've written and completed all these songs, may as well release all of them since people will listen'. i looooove a double album, or just long albums in general, so i felt like it was quite a disservice to the format tbh, and at worst felt like a chart maximising tactic. all of that said, i have historically been a massive taylor fan for over 13 years now, so i am only getting this riled up because i believe in her abilities and want so badly to enjoy her output - any other pop artist, i'd probably just sigh
@@hannahx5821 i'd also agree that it has absolutely never been her mo to do interludes and whatnot, she has always focused more on the individual songs than the overall project (notable exceptions being 1989 and folklore, which are two of her best albums). i guess i just don't think that approach works when applied to a double album format, so to me it comes across as less of an artistic decision to work on and release a double album project, and more of a streaming grab

10:30 this is such a fascinating point. I’m honestly kind of amazed that after spending so much time re-recording her back catalog and later showcasing it on tour that she wouldn’t feel inspired to reincorporate some of those sounds into her new material.
But then she would be criticized for recycling old sounds? People don’t have to like TTPD but it literally is a compilation of different styles from her prior albums which is also the biggest criticism?
I really hope she takes this criticism to heart and actually tried to improve because I've been a ts fan since I was a kid and my love for her reignited when she released folklore, and this is the first time I've been quite disappointed by an album that I was so excited for.
It’s boring, not many songs are memorable. She should work with someone other than Jack Antonoff. After the final leg of her tour she should take a break. We don’t need a new album every two years…

6:55 "It is uncharacteristically sloppy for Taylor, in terms of songwriting execution."
This is my biggest criticism about TTPD. I am a huge fan of Taylor Swift and I can see how this album is just weirdly bloated in all the wrong ways.
Folklore and Evermore are much much better in subtle cleverness, especially with the storytelling contained within. Truly a fall from grace. She should serriously consider taking a break.
One of the most common critiques of her among even her fans (at least those with the capacity to see that she CAN do wrong) is that she has glaring quality control issues. It's like she doesn't know what's good or bad. She'll write some incredible poetry and then hilariously awful lines all within the same song (most popular example being Willow and the godforsaken 90s trend line).
@@FPSBuzzNo offense but I think she might have let the popularity gotten into her head, thinking that she can release any song and it doesn't matter if the quality's bad because she's too big to fail. Not that I think she should be taken off her pedestal a notch or two but it might be worth for her to actually sit and take her time making good quality songs that deserve the fame she gets.
@@vtheory7531 You seem to be under the impression that she would even consider this as bad material, which is wholly inconsistent with how she portrays herself and the world around her.

I love Taylor and I really admire this record but at the same time everything’s so overwhelming and underwhelming simultaneously. Upon first listen, I only liked three songs out of sixteen. Taylor, please fire Jack Antonoff and just relax when writing songs… your best work is made when you think you don’t have to prove anything to people. Loml, TSMWEL, and Guilty as Sin? (a Jack Antonoff collab but the production wasn’t too much) are the better songs in this album because it is straightforward lyrics-wise and has good instrumentals.

I will admit it, i am a big Kim K hater but man this is not taylor being the bigger person. this is woe is me ass writing.
i think all of speak now is a good parallel to the criticisms of the album. its a way more mature album and that's even including better than revenge. theoretically better than revenge should have the cringe flair of "who's afraid of little old me" but it just works for some reason and lines like "now go stand in the corner and think about what you did" and "she should keep in mind there's nothing i do better than revenge" are fun and playful regardless. the production is great with some really cool instrumentals like on the song haunted whereas jack antonoff just creates such a boring environment on ttpd. the choruses feel earned and grand and the songs are written very well like with back to december (NOT TO MENTION ITS A SONG WHERE SHE ADMITS SHE'S FLAWED AND THAT SHE MESSED UP which is very anti-modern swift given the narcissism in her recent projects).
i think it really just comes down to the fact that speak now is a genuine album with engaging production, more mature lyrics and good songwriting and ttpd is an artificial self indulgent attempt at being edgy with boring overdone production, really cringe lyrics and generic songwriting at best.

😐
I'm genuinely a fan of Taylor and have listened to her since I was 10. I was a defender of Reputation and Midnights. The only album I didn't vibe with was Lover but mostly because it felt like a step back and that was rectified with folklore.
This is the worst thing she's ever made in a way that feels a lot more final. Like, something vaguely legacy-destroying. Maybe the facade finally broke for me, where the person that came across in public finally coalesces into the person that came across in the music, but it's so, so embarrassing. Taylor has become too rich, too privileged, too disconnected from reality to write anything even slightly relatable to anyone outside of a rabid core fanbase. It's a movie franchise descending into empty fanservice, with anything genuinely interesting or creative has been wrung out in service of The Brand. Taylor's narcissism has gone from being an interesting character flaw in an often deeply raw and emotionally vulnerable artist to being the only thing she even does anymore. She's become the same kind of cringe as a late-period emo band, still screaming and whining about your ex well into your 30s and well beyond when you should've grown up already.
It makes sense to me that despite being 34 herself, most of her particularly invested fanbase aren't people like me who are less than a decade younger than her and grew up with her music from the beginning, they're current-day teenagers, as in people with significantly less life experience than Taylor herself. She's cultivated this, a fanbase so invested in picking apart her lyrics to add to their lore (because that's the only real way to get anything out of it at this point), yet seems to resent the level of scrutiny that invites. Obviously artists are allowed to write about relationships without being obligated to enjoy seeing those relationships raked through the public eye, but Taylor isn't a normal artist, she's a billionaire, a towering persona that barely even feels human in the music anymore. If you don't want to feel like your fanbase of teenagers is judging you for your relationships, just maybe write about something else? She clearly has the ability to do so, folklore especially showed that, but it feels like she just wants to exist in this songwriting comfort zone as to establish her legacy and fight against her long-documented insecurity about getting replaced in the industry. Just deeply unrelatable and boring stuff, the kind of music you can only write as a truly out of touch billionaire who doesn't have anything to say anymore.
I do feel vaguely bitter about it, probably unreasonably so, because I really felt like folklore/evermore and even Midnights to a certain extent represented Taylor's transition into a more mature artist who had more variety in her song topics (and a real gift for fiction and storytelling) as a natural extension of being a proper adult now, and I was excited for where her music was going to go from there. This feels like an intentional regression, to wallow in the drama that you seemed like you were leaving behind when in reality it had just been parked. After more than 15 years and defending her music through times when it was really unpopular to do so, I can't in any way call myself a fan of Taylor's music anymore and it genuinely does upset me.

I had a similar experience with MOTOMAMI back in the day lmao. I honestly think Rosalia was just trolling with that nonsense. But production wise was seriously good and creative. Fun album in general.
Taylor Swift sounds like a 16 year old who discovered indie music for the first time, thought "I could do that" and just emulates it poorly because she thought being edgy in song writing sounded cool.

Yeah, I wish it was just sometimes. Like on 1989 there were 2 Jack-produced songs and they are both good and provide some nice variety to the Martin/Shellback tracks. 6 on Reputation. Folklore he's got plenty, but still less than half. Then just 1 on Evermore. But then Midnights and this he's completely taken over, and so instead of providing a contrast it just becomes this monotonous mass of Jack. I vote 4 songs an album maximum.
taylor should stop working with taylor
@@camipcothat’s a fine opinion but not sure it’s true (I personally love Midnights). But on her last 4 albums the production credits have been:
TTPD: Antonoff 14, Dressner 15, both 2
Midnights: JA 17, AD 3, both 1
folklore: JA 2, AD 9, plus Joe on 6 lol
evermore: JA 1, AD 14
That’s 41 for Dressner to 34 for Jack with 3 both credited; similar with writing credits: 36 Dressner, 30 Jack, 2 both.
Whatever criticism is being leveled about it all sounding the same (which I thought initially but on re-listen there’s plenty of variety) would actually be leveled at Dressner cuz there’s no way someone can hear TTPD and think it sounds like Midnights. I don’t see anybody suggesting her working with Dressner is a mistake. Not being her best album is very different from it being a bad album.
@@dsmith2420 You're right, although as Fantano says, TTPD not-anthology is Antonoff heavier while the anthology half is Dressner heavier and better for it. And I significantly prefer Evermore to Midnights and Folklore for this reason.
I also want to say, this criticism at least from me is compared to what I think she's capable of. Every Taylor album is great, and I think Antonoff is a very good producer. I like TTPD significantly more than Fantano seems to. I just think it would be even better with more varied and dynamic production.
I will say while I prefer Dressner to Antonoff, their production is similar enough that it doesn't help much.
And of course, every single one of these tracks has the same name on production - Swift. We know one of the reasons she likes working with both of these men is they defer to her and aren't bossing her around which of course I totally get why she doesn't want to be working with the plethora of male producers who would not show her due respect. As other folks have said, there's definitely some sexism in assigning all credit/blame for production to these two men (to be clear, I'm not calling you out, I was doing it too), when Swift herself has production credit for a reason.
And Swift is and has always been an incredibly skilled mimic. The reason she was able to conquer country is she figured out the sound and how to capture it so perfectly. Then she did the same for pop and then the same for indy. I'm not saying that's all she does, but it's always been a big part of her music and her commercial success. Much of the time, she gives the audience something familiar they already like. I don't mean that as an insult, it is a serious skill. And at this point in her career, she's out of worlds to conquer and is mimicking herself. I just wish we'd see her try more.
@@camipco there’s a lot of truth there. I wasn’t trying to discredit you at all either. You’re 100% spot on about how TTPD was arranged-it’s essentially two albums. One produced with Jack and one with Aaron (with a little crossover on each). I wouldn’t even disagree with anyone suggesting she should consider bringing in a new ear. Dressner is great but basically 3 full albums with him is probably just right. Like I said, Midnights is my favorite album so I don’t hate Antonoff’s sound (I’m also biased towards anybody who was part of creating Some Nights haha) but she’s typically switched it up every few records. That’s what’s so impressive. Other than Nashville Taylor, none of her albums are similar unless you wanna count folklore/evermore as separate which I don’t.
But yes, I believe she’s received writing and producing credits on every single track since Reputation (and it was most of those too). Hell she even set Joe up for life from folklore royalties haha
TTPD sounded repetitive to me on first listen but I’d say that’s true for all music. I didn’t like Fortnight the first time but that’s a great song. There’s not as much monotony as people are suggesting but ironically the most diverse portion is Antonoff’s half.
Lover is my least favorite album by far (though it’s growing on me) but that’s fine. There’s bound to be something not everybody likes when you’re putting out as many records as she has especially when they’re all different. The suggestion some people are making that TTPD proves she’s not that talented is laughable. But videos like this are so disingenuous. Shitting on her for not being original while simultaneously claiming Fortnight or Florida are bad songs is insane. Her and Florence are great together. But when someone sells 700k vinyls in 3 days in 2024 im gonna go out on a limb and suggest the album probably isn’t actually bad. Her worst album if you consider TTPD is that would be 99% of artists best work by a mile. That’s how high her bar is.

She has a history of making "friendships" in the industry with artists she finds interesting and then starting it as if she had used what she wanted and left. That's what happened to Lorde.
the dopamine rush I got when I saw the red flannel is inexplicable
like a bull 😂
that’s weird, why
@@daved6536bc other critics blindly praise taylor and never acknowledge her obvious shortcomings
@@alara4006 I think most critics are pretty fair tbh
@daved6536 Rolling Stone gave her a 10 💀 ain't no way this shit equals Regina Spektor, Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow, Liz Phair, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Carly Simon, PJ Harvey or literally any other female singer-songwriter 💀
My colleague played this in our office, our manager called us The Tortured Ears Department.
Sounds like a story you made up
Damn lil old president on all of these replies go to sleep mf literally wasting energy on some bullshit @@PresidentKamalaHarris.
@@PresidentKamalaHarris. I agree someone playing music out loud and someone else making a remark about it is the least believable thing I’ve ever considered in my entire life
Sounds like your manager has an imagination barrier
@@PresidentKamalaHarris.this is the most believable fantano comment I have ever seen
Personally. I feel that Taylor Swift should have just skipped releasing a full album, and just released Fortnight as a single.
i think this album could've genuinely been pretty good if she cut out like 21 songs. it's such a long album and all of the songs sound so similar that it's genuinely hard to get through.
Just because your favorite team lost the superbowl doesnt mean you can give it a zero melon.
