Maybe a funny cartoony scream sfx plays! No. First he stops in mid-air, obviously paying homage to a classic cartoon trope: the character walking several steps past a cliff and into the air, only to look down, probably look back up at the audience and gulp, and then start falling. Now you're thinking, “okay, he's gonna look down and up really quick and _then_ he'll fall!” Again, no. He spends _just a little too long_ looking down, then up. You're thinking, “alright this is getting a little drawn-out, but he's gonna fall now for sure!” Nope. He pulls out a tiny little umbrella, and now you know exactly how this is gonna happen. PREFACE: The "gana" in "hiragana" is the same word as the "kana" in "katakana". For some reason that even native scholars can't agree upon, the first sound of some Japanese words changes when placed after certain other words. Both scripts collectively can be called "kana".

While I understand Joel was just speaking loosely, kana & kanji aren't "alphabets". In an alphabet, every letter is one of the most basic sounds that can be made in that language. Most kana each represent more than one of those sounds and are considered "syllabaries", i.e. each kana is usually one syllable. There are exceptions (especially when writing foreign words in katakana) where multiple kana are combined to create modified sounds not otherwise used in the language. Kanji are logographs, i.e. each kanji is an entire word... but kanji can be considered to be "spelled" by the pieces that make them up, the same way their Chinese root characters are, and most practical words (especially non-verbs) are actually made from two kanji.

It's true that many older games such as FF1 didn't have support for kanji, but YOU DO NOT EVER WANT TO LEARN WRITTEN JAPANESE WITHOUT KANJI. Kanji are the only thing that makes written Japanese make any sense - they're the only native way to mark where one word stops and another begins. (Foreign words, written entirely in katakana, often use the ・ character to separate words.) Also, because you can't speak the difference between kanji and kana (the only way to tell someone how to pronounce a kanji is to "spell it out" in kana), written Japanese and spoken Japanese are effectively two different languages.

All spoken languages of China - Mandarin, Cantonese, etc. - use the same writing system; that's the entire reason the writing system was invented. Written Chinese characters are called hanzi. "Kanji" is effectively the Japanese way to say "hanzi" (both terms mean "Chinese characters" word-for-word).
Most hanzi, and consequently most kanji, were originally created as very rough and sometimes metaphorical illustrations of things. Over thousands of years, these symbols have changed a lot (Japanese kana were derived from kanji, for instance) and a lot of them now either mean something different from what they did before, or no longer clearly resemble anything to begin with. Here are some that still do:
木 tree
本 book; you cut the tree to get paper to make a book with
森 forest; it's three trees
口 mouth
日 day; it's the sun Minecraft-style, with a line added in the middle so it doesn't look just like 口
上 above; it points up
下 below; it points down
王 king; it's a crown... even if the kanji for crown itself is 冠 or 冕
玉 jewel; it's the king's crown with one of the jewels added
雨 rain; it's rain falling from a cloud
馬 horse; it's four legs and a tail (or lowered head), carrying stuff on the back

Very late response, but the connection between 本 and books is a later innovation, and AFAIK only Japanese uses it with that specific meaning (in Chinese it serves as a classifier for books, roughly equivalent to "copy" or "edition"-the main words for "book" are 書/书 and 冊/册, the latter mostly in Classical Chinese and Southern Min languages). The alternate meaning "root, stem; origin" is the original and is more clearly reflected in the older forms of the graph, which depict a tree with roots extending downward.
