  • Leon Draisaitl, who has one year remaining on the eight-year, $68M contract he signed in 2017, told the media on Wednesday that he will take some time to assess his future. TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button joins Ryan Rishaug to discuss Draisaitl's future in Edmonton, how much money he might get on his next deal, and if the Oilers can afford to allow him to enter next season without an extension in place.

    If Leon resigns that is a good sign that mcdavid will resign. You know they are talking behind the scenes

    Obviously Leon and Connor have to be signed for basically any price. However the issue is that we have another 15 mill stuck up with Campbell and Nurse...

    I dont think signing Leon before he goes to UFA is that much of a priority. He's going to wait to see what McDavid does next summer and then I think they'll sign them both if they want to stay.

    With McDavid coming to this situation next year, I’m not letting Leon get to July.1, 2025 without being signed or traded. I love the player and want him signed but I’m not leaving it to free agency. As an organization you cannot afford to lose this player with no return.

    • @barryjames73
      @barryjames73 Před 2 dny +2

      Realistically you can't let him get to the end of the summer without being signed or traded. Going into the season without a deal being done is a huge risk for the Oilers.

    If you want to win the cup take a 3 year deal at a pay cut
    Get better players to come play with
    Win the cup than get paid
    If you take 14 million a year
    You don’t really want the cup

    • @pl6818

      Leon’s already taken a pay cut for the past 8 years. He’s been playing on $8m USD a year which is a steal. There’s no way he should be paid less than Nurse lol

    It depends on what they want. If they wanna win the cup Edmonton is as good as anywhere. I mean roll the dice on a half dozen franchises but Edmonton is in the mix right now. Largely because of Leon and Connor but this year was especially good and they know it because their play is bolstered by a real team, with steady coaching and prospects.
    But if they want the money. If they wanna live somewhere else. If they dont get along with the team or hate the travel or wanna live by the ocean etc etc.then offering 20 wont get them. Like Gaudreau and Tkachuk if they wanna go then negotiations are pointless and you get to ride it out one last time.

      He’s a fantastic player don’t get me wrong, but without Mcdavid I think you minus 30-40 points a year off his totals. Drai is well aware of how lucky he is to play with Mcdavid and wants to keep it that way I’m sure.

    This decision won't be made separately. You think Drai and McD never talked about this? I think they have a pretty good understanding already of what they want to do. Whether it aligns with the oilers or not who knows.

    The Oilers cannot afford to have the NHL’s two best players in their prime and not suffer in other areas of the team. Trade Leo or let him go and get two 6 million dollar players and improve the team’s depth.

    So they resign Draisa 14 Mill and MacDavid at 16+ mill at the end of next season. So 1/3 of salary cap in two players? Not unless they get rid of Nurse at 9.25 and good luck with that unless they throw in the first and second round picks for 2-3 years? W

    • @ML-my8qq
      @ML-my8qq Před 2 dny +1

      By the time McDavid’s contract would start the cap will be $100 million. So less than 1/3. Is it a lot? Hell ya, but you don’t have Tavares and Marner taking up a lot of your cap. You have the best player in the world and one of the top 3 players in the league
