  • In The Hermit’s Cave Facebook group I posed the question ‘What tarot decks do you consider to be Modern Classics’? There is an interesting response, and here in this video I talk about my decks that I consider to be modern classics and the reasons why.

    As someone who battles anxiety, depression, PTSD with schizo-affect, and periodic psychosis and other mental health conditions, I love the Osho Zen tarot, and I don't feel a need to grumble about a single card labeled schizophrenia. Thank you for bringing that up.

    I loved watching this back and seeing your modern classics, I have a fair few of them 😊 when you said at the beginning your favourite thing to do is sit and play with cards at your desk I thought Snap! 😆 sometimes I just get decks out and sit looking through each card or shuffle them. Another fave thing of mine to do is put the cards back in order…I know, weird 😂 I may do a VR to this one 🥰❤️

    If you'd asked me to make this list a few years ago, I probably would have had both the Hanson-Roberts and the Robin Wood Tarot decks on it, but now...I don't know. Lately they've seemed a bit dated to me in a way that the Morgan Greer, for all of its '70s pornstache aesthetic, doesn't. I'm no longer as convinced that they'll really stand the test of time in the same way that I feel the Morgan Greer and the Aquarian will. I can't even begin to put my finger on what exactly the difference may be, but nonetheless, I find that my feelings about their longevity has begun to change as the years go by.
    A very interesting topic, Simon. Thank you!

    • @простадівчина
      @простадівчина Před rokem +1

      I think for me that those 2 are a bit dated in too sweet, dated hair, too many blondes...the MG just managed to stay ahead of all that theme-type stuff, the people are somber/neutral, borderless! and the colors are still "wow". I have the RW book (pre-owned) but never ever wanted those 2 you mentioned. MG was the first deck I bought and kept in the early 90s.

    A wonderful video Simon! Like you, IJJ Swiss was my first deck, I had the boxed set, then I got the James Bond 007 boxed set, then Morgan Greer, then the Aquarium. I love the Morgan Greer Tarot and yes, there is a version published by Morgan Press that has very narrow black borders. I have a copy from years ago, The Chariot is printed off-centre which I think is a common fault with it. I think it was just the first edition that had the black borders.

  • @BrianGryphon
    @BrianGryphon Před 2 lety +2

    My 1st deck was Morgan-Greer; just couldn't connect (horrors) with the Yellow Box RWS my partner at the time used. I bought another copy (M/G) a year later; the 1st copy is strictly my personal deck. The Deviant Moon is the only deck that comes close to replacing it. Other Tarot decks bought last century include the Aquarian, since rehomed, the Medieval Scapini, looking to rehome, and the Sacred Rose (LE majors only) which intrigues me, but is rarely used.

    Thank you Simon I love your videos it feels like just having a chat with a friend- yes I talk back to you.
    My first tarot many many moons ago was also the 1JJ no idea where that ended up I think I gave it to a friend, when I got more into using tarot as a tool for inner work rather than just divination and bought my 2nd and 3rd the Thoth and Gareth Knight and Sander Littel’s Tarot 1985! I then bought a RWS and 15 years ago a beautiful round deck ‘Songs for the journey Home’ from two amazing ladies from NZ who I met at a MBS fair. collected a couple more early 2000’s Glastonbury, Druid craft. Last year I really got into some of the beautiful decks that were walked through online, and now have a selection of decks for readings and esoteric work. There’s so many I would love to own especially the Winter Waite, I only saw it late last year so missed the original - I’m late to the tarot online community/party. I am definitely going to get the Glitter Winter Waite, when it’s available- it is stunning.
    Love your choices here, I think I would definitely add The Wildwood Tarot which I just love and having received as a gift this past Christmas am loving exploring it. Yes Lightseers’ is gorgeous, uplifting and inspiring. The one deck I regret not buying when given the opportunity is the SOL (servants of the light) tarot Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki as I had and was using the GK one for path work I passed; it has the most beautiful hermit. It’s now selling for ridiculous amounts.
    So most of my decks are probably not modern classics in a wider sense but the ones mentioned here are amongst my favourite familiar ones. One last deck that I have to mention again a RWS based is Martha Millers round deck hand painted with veg dyes a little Indy deck that I bought last year and I adore.
    Peace be with you 🕯

    ah Simon i’m glad you have showed these. I bought a supposed an original 1971 RwS deck from ebay about two years ago but i’ve seen none that are like these, there super thin, has like linen lines through it and the colors are soft pale but with a soft brightness to them. Would love to be able to compare this deck with anyone that may have an original 1971 RWS deck. These are some beautiful decks. Love all your card casings.
