      The ole chicken and egg problem. But with a workbench, Chris Schwartz shows that you can build a roubo style work bench starting with the top construction on saw horses.

    There's a lot of comments here but if the Crafted Workshop guy (not sure what his name is) happens to read this I have to say thanks! I have been watching so many bench build videos but haven't found the right one until now. Months of searching and watching to find just what I need. FINALLY! I'm so happy to get these plans! Can't wait to start.

    First... Redwing Iron Rangers. Well done sir.
    Second, I like that you went with pocket holes and took the time to clamp everything together. So far, I've seen people just screw everything together using their hands and it just looks sloppy.
    Third, I HAD NO IDEA my miter saw could do that!! Thank you for showing me this!

    You should add a recess where the miter saw is and have a cut out so when you drop it down you can put a piece there and have a big work surface without a hole in it 👍🏼

    I bought the plans for this and am in the middle of assembling the bottom frame. Just thought I’d provide some thoughts. The plans are excellent. I’m making a few design adjustments for the miter platform and I also plan on adding a miter lift opposite the miter saw. These require some adjustments to the top frame I’m also adding extra legs as I don’t feel comfortable with just the two supports at the back of the miter cutout. These changes also mean adjustments to the bottom panel, the drawer cabinets, and drawers themselves. I quickly learned Sketchup and the mods were easy to do.
    I love the idea of ripping 2x8’s and turning them into two boards three inches wide. Like in the video, I assembled the legs and then trimmed to three inches. They look great.
    So far, I love this project. It may be a tad aggressive for a second project (first was sawhorses), but so far so good. I have quickly improved the accuracy of my cuts and paid close attention to the plans and the videos which has led to good results.
    Thanks for the excellent plans and videos.

    If you want another recommendation, Delta has made a miter saw similar to the Bosch called the Cruzer. Got mine on sale at Home Depot (Black Friday) for $350 (10" model). Amazing little saw. Set up on the Rigid miter saw cart. Crazy good combo for small workshops.

    What a great video! I usually find myself saying, “Why did he do it that way?” or “I would have done that a little differently.” But on this video - from the very start (when you bought 2x8s to cut down so you’d have better quality stock) I found myself saying, “Wow, great idea!” and “That was smart!” and “Wow, this guy’s GOOD!” Not to mention “Where did he get that badass magnetic strap on his impact driver?” and “I *WANT* one of those dust collectors!” Hats off to your awesome woodworking skills! You have a new subscriber.

  • @McFlysGarage
    @McFlysGarage Před 4 lety +1

    I like it. Very nice build and super functional. I do like that detachable fence thing but for me the registration blocks left in place would get in the way. there must be a way to create cutouts for it to register into the bench so when the saw is folded it’s a completely flat surface. That’s the only downside for me with that fence system, I’d probably do the T track option like you showed.
    But totally still an other awesome build by you.

    Nice bench!
    However, I'm concerned by your use of eye screws to hold your mitre saw platform up. If the weight of my Bosch Glide 10" is any indication, I reckon they will eventually pull out under use. A long eye bolt with washer and nyloc nut beneath would be a stronger option should the screw eventually pull through. You can shim the top with washers (or a machined spacer if you have a lathe) if required.

    Love your ideas and other videos. I have two questions though... what is the added value or comfort for the folding miter saw platform. You don't really seem to free that much space. Second question: the front casters seem to be 'in the way' when not in use. Wouldn't it be more convenient to place those on the sides also? I really like your videos and appreciate all the work you do so keep it up!

    • @jellyg.8961
      @jellyg.8961 Před 2 lety

      Unless you have a ton of space to put stuff on, like the miter saw, probably your workbench is the same place where you use your miter saw (in my case I use it on my workbench for smaller cuts, for longer ones I put the saw on the floor). That means I'm always putting and removing the saw when needed or not needed. Having a foldable platform solves this problem, the saw will be there just when you need it, freeing the top of the bench when not used.

      A table this size is best with 6 legs not 4. I think he added in center so the chop saw flip table will fit. You can build a work table much lighter with less lumber on top, use 6 legs (extra 2 placed half way between corners on long side). He made a newer outfield video for a simpler plenty strong design, which can be made this size. Just use 2 more legs

    Great work bench but I would have made the cutting bed (whatever it's called of the miter saw flush with the top and used the t-track like you are doing everywhere else, just add a measuring tape to it so you know the distance, you get the added support for long pieces also. It would be less parts to have to take off and store, which for me means I would actually use that feature more often, and you would have more t-track to use for clamping if needed. But that's just me

    Why not attach the top from underneath using angle brackets (like you would a kitchen benchtop)?

    Great build. Gives me a few ideas for my new miter station project. Thanks for the video. How do you account for the garage floor slope? Maybe yours is flat but mine goes down 1/4"per foot. Any advice?

    Beautiful! Goals for the future! I need a favor (if u read this lol) can u please check if the Festool Hold Down Clamp will fit correctly in the 3/4 hole on the back of your Flexvolt Slider!? I want that $90 (🤦‍♂️) hold down clamp so bad but I don’t know any1 that has 1 😔

      Unfortunately, I don't have the Flexvolt saw anymore but you could always just order a hold down from Amazon and return it if you don't need it!

      Crafted Workshop oh darn no biggie thanks neway, I read some1 used it & it worked, was just a bit skeptical. It’s just a heavy price tag but yeah that’s prob my best bet. Wide material supports (just bought) & 1-2 “quick” hold down clamps.. Is my job site 16’ poplar board dream lol gotta keep it square’d up! u get it 😉
