    Re the Hogsmeade town outing: only 3rd-year students and older could visit town, so it was a special first time for Ron and Hermione. Harry wouldn't have expected them to stay back. In the book they did bring back bottled butterbeers and bags of candy to share.

    • @joshuacoldwater

      While this is the truth, and the book stated this… maybe I just was raised differently? If any of my friends were left out, for whatever reason, I made it a personal mission to stay with them. I’d then make take the time we stayed back and make unforgettably fun and unique. While, yes, it would’ve been their “special first time” it was also supposed to be their best friend’s “special first time”. I would’ve been miserable knowing that he was not experiencing it with us. They could’ve waited and made the NEXT TIME all of their “special first time” together. I think it was a very dry move, and I hope in the future I teach my kids better.

      what’s even more crazy about their mistake is that 15 minutes later they contradict themselves by having Harry be worried about being in trouble with the Ministry for accidentally using magic on his aunt

    • @somewhereonlyweknow2814
      @somewhereonlyweknow2814 Před 2 měsíci +3

      @@mario.gainesI don’t think it was a mistake at all, I believe it’s because there’s a big difference between the spells used. Lumus is quite an inconsequential spell, it’s not dangerous or attention grabbing. Blowing up a whole human being, on the other hand (and a muggle one, at that), is a whole other level. It’s dangerous and also impossible to ignore. The Ministry can’t possibly track down every one for a simple Lumus every time, they’ll only show up for serious situations.

      @@somewhereonlyweknow2814 you clearly didn’t read the books, cause in Chamber of Secrets Harry gets a official warning from the Ministry because Dobby used a hover charm on the pudding…you’re forgetting this is an entire government full of Magic they can absolutely show up to every single little incident of underage Magic if they wanted to because it is immediately detected due to a trace that is placed on all wizards to detect any magic being used around them until they turn 17

      @ronjakribach2779 Před 2 měsíci

      @@somewhereonlyweknow2814 the books make it clear, that every kind of magic is illegal for underaged outside of school. And because of the trace they are able to notive every bit of magic that happens around underaged wizards. They do attend even the less dangerous spells, like the levitation by Dobby in Chamber of secrets. It is not dangerous but Harry receives a letter from the ministry immediately with a warning in it. Thats Part of why they escalated in ootp because in their mind it is Harrys second time breaking law (and of course because of fudge). So it really is a big mistake by the movies. The ministry would question Harry immediately if he would have done even lumos

    The kids still wear their school uniforms to class - you see that when they are in class with Professor Lupin. Outside of class hours, they can wear normal street clothes, and the director really leaned into that. Lupin knew where to find Harry in the Shrieking Shack because he had the map. He hurried off to find Harry, and left the map active, so Snape was able to see where he had gone.
    A detail they left out of the movie is that the Dementors can't really sense animals, so they can't track Sirius when he's in his dog form. That's how he got into the castle.

    Its not mentioned here but the reason Sirius is able to escape is until then the Dementors keep their prisoners in a constant state of depression making them relive all their worst fears and experiences. so Sirius was never strong enough to change into his dog form. However someone visiting Azkaban leaves a copy of the Daily Prophet and Sirius see's wormtail as a rat in Rons arms. Realising what happened 12 years ago he knows who set him up and that Harry is in danger. This gives him hope and purpose again making him strong enough to transform and therefore by passing the dementors.

    One of the things that was left out of the movie but was in The Prisoner of Azkaban novel is that James Potter (Harry's father), Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew were the original inventors of The Marauders Map. That is the reason why Professor Lupin knew how to use it. When the original Marauders were students in Hogwarts they were all best friends. When James, Sirius and Peter found out that Remus is a werewolf they decided to become Animagus (wizards that can willfully magically turn into an animal just like Professor McGonagall can turn into a cat) because werewolves don't attack other animals and Remus' friends didn't want him to be alone during the full moon period. This is why the map reveals the weird names when you use the "I solemnly swear I am up to no good" spell. They were the nicknames of the Marauders. Mooney is Remus Lupin because he is a werewolf. Padfoot is Sirius Black because his animagus form is a dog. Wormtail is Peter Pettigrew because his animagus form is a rat. And James Potter is Prongs because his animagus form is a stag.
    Dumbledore knew about Remus' condition and how Remus became a werewolf when he was only a very small child. So he had the Womping Willow tree planted and had a tunnel put in so that Remus can hide in the Shrieking Shack during the full moon cycle.

      The difference between an Animagus and Transfiguration of ones self is that an Animagus can actually live as the animal where a wizard that transfigures themselves into an animal cannot maintain it for very long. The creators of the map “the marauders” were Harry’s dad’s friend group. Mooney was Lupin because he’s a werewolf, wormtail was Peter Pettigrew because he could transform into a rat (rat tails look like worms), Padfoot was Sirius because Sirius could transform into a dog and prongs was James Potter because he could transform into a stag (a male deer with antlers). They all learned to become animagi to accompany Lupin while he was a werewolf.
    The reason Lupin knew where to find Sirius and Harry/friends is because he saw it on the map. The reason Snape knew was because Lupin hastily left once he saw it and he was bringing Lupin his full moon potion. Snape then saw it on the map where to find them all.

    "Lupin" is derived from "Lupine," which refers to the genus of flowering plants in the legume family, Fabaceae. The term "Lupine" is also related to "Lupus," which is Latin for "wolf." This connection comes from the belief that certain species of lupine plants were harmful to livestock, just as wolves were. "Lupine" also shares a root with "Lycanthropy," the mythical condition of transforming into a wolf, which we commonly associate with werewolves. Also....In astronomy, Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. It's part of the constellation Canis Major, often referred to as the "Dog Star" because it's located in the constellation representing a dog.

    Boggarts and bogles are amongst the oldest mythological creatures in British culture. There are references to them in lots of old folklore. They are often shapeshifting creatures, though bogles came to be associated with ghosts in Scotland. In all cases they are untrustworthy things you must approach with great caution.
    They are associated with goblins (pucks, pwca) and elfs, house elfs being a type of goblin or bogle known as a brownie or hob in some places, and they are also considered to be an equivalent to the Roman genius loci a sort of spirit attached to a place.

    Another bit of lore that they left out in the movied. Hermione's cat is half-kneazle, a magical creature similar to a cat that is extremly intelligent. Crookshank kept attacking Scabbers because he knew something was going on. Also, he met Sirius in his animagus form at the school's grounds and they became friends. It was Crookshanks the one helping Sirius all along (he got him the Gryffindor passwords, he lured the trio inti the Shrieking Shack...)

    Well dementors don't usually leave the prison since no one had ever escaped before Sirius did. That's why no one but Dumbledore thought stationing them at Hogwarts was a bad idea. The Ministry in it's arrogance thought they were in control of even the dementors natural instincts to feed off of the emotions of *anyone* in their vicinity no matter the temptation they were presented with.
    Snape was trying to expose Lupin as a werewolf in that class. He had no idea at the time that Sirius was an unregistered animagus. No one did except Lupin and Dumbledore. Neither of whom connected that with how Sirius escaped from Azkaban.

    54:42 one thing that the movies never explained, but are in the books. The map was created by James Potter, Sirius, Black, Peter Pettigrew, and Remus Lupin. Their nicknames are Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs. Harry’s dad, James is also an animagus. His animal form is a stag, that’s why Harry’s patronus is a stag as well. Properly cast expecto patronum him forms an animal.

    30:30 Harry is sassy, but in this moment (which isn't in the CZcams edit) he really does just read what the Marauders Map says after Snape tells it to 'reveal its secrets' - the Map actually responded to Snape's command. The comments might have explained this already, but the Marauders were actually James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew, back when they were students and best friends at Hogwarts. They created the Map, and imbued it with a bit of their own personality. Snape was also at school at the same time as them (as you've probably gathered from Sirius' comments about Harry's dad), and that meant the Map knew who Snape was, and made those comments about him. That's also why Lupin knows it's a Map of the school and gets annoyed with Harry for risking his safety (since at this point Lupin also sadly believes Sirius killed James and Lily and doesn't know the truth yet), even when Harry said 'Mischief managed' and the parchment looks blank at that point. That's a small movie detail that often gets missed - how does Lupin knows it's a Map, unless he's used it before? For anyone who reads the book, it's more obvious.

    In this movie, most of the time was spent during days off from school, hence the street clothes. There are multiple ways to think about time travel. I can see that some commenters have explained IMPORTANT LORE that was left out of this movie and IS NOT A SPOILER (because the movies never explain it and it drives me mad) regarding James, Sirius, Lupin and Peter's time as students - and their nicknames (Prongs, Padfoot, Moony, and Wormtail respectively) from that time when they were actually The Marauders who made the Map. Plus more about Lupin's childhood as someone suffering from lycanthropy, and why his friends decided to learn to be an Animagus in secret (stag, dog, rat). Definitely worth reading any comments that explain this!

    In the Prisoner of Azkaban book, Professor McGonagall got permission from the Ministry of Magic to allow Hermione to borrow a Time Turner so that she may take as many classes as she like. But taking so many classes with the Time Turner began to take a large physical toll on Hermione. She was cramming almost 48 hours of living into a 24 hour day. She even started having a hard time staying awake during the day. By the very end of the book Hermione returned the Time Turner to Professor McGonagall not only because it was physically getting far too difficult to live that many extra hours in a single day but Hermione began to consider the Time Turner way too powerful of a temptation to use for other reasons. Like Hermione said to Harry, "Terrible things happens to wizards who meddle with time".

    You didn't seem low energy you seem to find. To answer some of your questions Lupine follow them because he saw it on the map when Snape went to give Lupin the potion and keep him from changing into a wolf he saw Lupine heading off the map and followed it. It tells in the books but they were all shapeshifters because they were all friends in high school and wanted to go out and protect their friend when he had to turn into a werewolf. And Harry's dad turned into a stag and his father's Patronus is a stag too. So technically his father was there with him so Harry wasn't completely wrong. This was said in the books but there was not enough time in the movie to put it in. Great reaction.

    So while a lot of people don’t love Michael Gambon as Dumbledore, I personally think his energy is closer to what I imagined when reading the books. While Richard Harris was brilliant and brought the regality and presence of Dumbledore, Michael Gambon really gave the youthful energy despite his age that the character always had. And,“spoiler,” aside from the most memed scene of the series, his portrayal is excellent.
    Also regarding Dementors,I think dumbledore said they will not separate between the one they’re after and anyone who gets in their way. So they can tell, they just don’t care, which makes them more terrifying.

    19:42 Most of these students aren't wearing their cloaks here as they were just outside Hogwarts, visiting Hogsmeade in their free time. But also, there's just more casual wear in this movie -Alfonso Cuaron wanted to represent what kids at the time looked like a bit more. So the outfits and hairstyles are VERY early 2000s - like what real kids wore day to day rather than what fashion magazines showed.

    A rather important bit from the books that will be quite significant later on about the Patronuses: Not every whizard is able to conjur one and even less are able to conjur a powerful corporal one. Dark whizards (as Voldemort's followers) are not able to conjur one at all. The Patronus takes the a form complementing your personality and could in rare cases even change into another form to complement the person you really love. James Potter's Patronus as well as Animagus form was a stag Lilly's Potter's was a doe. Harry's is the same as his father's but at the same time complements his mother's too.

Because that is how you summon the Knight bus and you basically stand on the side of the road with your wand in front of you to summon the bus he was basically making sure Harry didn't try flying to safety or hitchhiking or anything like that he wanted to make sure he had safe passage to London. The Black family (except Narsissa; not met yet) are named after stars/constellations hence the sky in the hall. Sirius is the dog star hence a black dog animagus! The Weasley's are from the house of Black as Arthur's mother was a Black. There is a spell cast on the Dursley house to not only protect Harry but the Dursley's as well. It requires a blood relative; Petunia, and she knows this fact hence why they reluctantly house Harry for at least 2 weeks per year. The spell breaks when Harry becomes 17 or if he leaves for good before. That's why the Dursley's are keen to keep him there and they are also trying to stop him learning more magic.

      Yeh Alfonso Cuaron is quite an “artsy” director and he likes everything to have flavour to it, so think he instructed the kids to alter their uniforms to how they would wear them in school, and then had them wear “normal” clothes in the free time to emphasise characters individuality. It’s one of the times where I can let go of book lore, in terms of allowing hogwarts students to be wearing muggle clothing around hogwarts. I kinda like the feel it gives the movie.
      Overall I think Alfonso made the best movie out of the 7. Not specifically the best “Harry potter film” but an overall film in general. The cinematography is amazing, and I particularly love the long takes he does. Very talented man.

    Mental health is very relevant, not just in these movies (more so as they progress) but in life in general. Good advice. Focusing on the present moment is a great relief. One way of doing that is to notice your own breath for a few minutes, or to sit in silence and just feel a body part, e g your hsmds. Just notice how they feel. The mind is hard to silence so the best way to meditate is to decide a simple thing to focus it on.
