@jessihawkins9116 The actors both stated it would be strange to explain how they have aged and being ghosts, they don't age. I'd like to think they could just cgi them as younger versions but we all know how that can go...

The father and even Otho showed some concern. The two guests didn't so glad they were killed off in such comedic fashion.
No kidding.
Well while she annoying, she not evil, you see little flashes of her better self through the film.

After all these years, this film still fascinates me.
A lot of viewers seem to have some confusion about this scene. Otho here is attempting a Seance to force the 2 ghosts to appear to impress the big shots from New York. But not understanding the power of the book for the dead, he accidentally is performing an exorcism of Barbara and Adam. That's why they start decomposing/dying in their wedding clothes after appearing. Lydia gets this and that's why she asks Beetlejuice (who's an exorcist himself) to save them. This was foreshadowed earlier in the movie when the tour guide in the afterlife shows the closet of the exorcised spirits, and how it's "death for the dead".
And got what he deserved: a CHANGE of clothes!
As funny as Lydia's line about changing a tire is, it's Robert Goulet's stifled laugh that really sells it.
There would be no Beetlejuice without Michael Keaton. One of the most iconic roles in movie history.
This might be the creepiest scene in any PG-rated comedy horror.

@@piratekingluffy1148 Well, sad but kind of scary too in a more sincere, non-humorous way. The horror in the rest of the movie tends to be more comedic.

It’s funny how little effort it took for Beetlejuice to reverse what was happening to them. He simply mimes a golf swing, causing them to fall down and then they gradually return to normal.
Wow, @mattewsoares9880, you figured this one out all by yourself, ha? Who else was Lydia supposed to go to for help ( Otho) couldn't reverse back what he did, so obviously, that would leave one other supernatural entity, and that's beetlejuice.
I always remember this part from when I was a kid when they come back start decaying and the guys jaw falls off.
One of the greatest films and film sound-tracks in cinema history. A masterpiece!
Everybody at that dinner party had been on the cover of Vanity Fair except Lydia.
I realize that now as an adult, Barbara and Adam took physical form and they started decomposing but I don’t think they were in pain.
I agree, there physical bodies had been dead so long, they started to breakdown, but their souls were trapped until Beetlejuice stepped in.
Why were they decomposing? What was the point of the scene?

Still sad to watch because you care so much about adam and barbara. This movie has you laughing one minute when they're dancing at the dinner table and on the vergenof tears with this scene. The musical score is so haunting as well.

I think Beetlejuice is actually really loveable and funny, even if he is bad. I have a major soft spot for him.
In the animated series he and Lydia were dear friends. Inseparable.
He's not a bad entity at all. He can only be of service when his name is called three times. Other than that, he is of no use for anyone or anything while he awaits in the spirit realm to be called upon.

It’s an exorcism. It’s a callback to when the Maitlands stumbled on the Lost souls room and the janitor had to explain to them that it was “death for the dead.”

You’ll have to forgive my ignorance, I always thought that when that guy read the book out loud, he found a chapter that could resurrect Barbra’s and Adam’s bodies, and place their souls back in them, only to have them decay, because they were dead for a long time, and it was against the natural order of things. At least that was the best explanation I could assume, seeing as how I never really understood what was happening with them. But what you say makes more sense, and fits it all. Thank you.
@@tomcameron1770 That's what I used to think. Otho did say "Let now the dead come alive" which on its face sounds like resurrection, and maybe the reason they started decaying was because he didn't really know what he was doing and messed up part of the incantation. But I suppose exorcism is most likely.

Beetlejuice fixed them. Lydia is the one who asked him to help the Maitlands. Once she said his name 3 times, releasing him from the model, he used his magic to fix them per Lydia's request (with strings, of course)
