Garbage Trucks: Olympic Disposal

  • Follow along for a day in the operations of the old Olympic Disposal of Montebello, California. Though the majority of their work consisted of commercial front load accounts in Long Beach handled by a trio of McNeilus Pacific Series on Peterbilt 320s, I instead rode along with Hector on his sprawling route spanning the far reaches of Los Angeles proper. Hitching a ride with Bill to Olympic's yard at 2 A.M. in order to fit in with Bill's work schedule meant I would be an hour early for the ride along, so I hopped the fence in front of a seemingly oblivious security guard and caught a surprisingly comfortable cat nap in Olympic's newest truck, a totally virgin CNG MRU/Amrep roll off with plastic still on the seats and paint still on the rails. Once Hector arrived we fueled up the MR, rolled out around 3 A.M., and knocked out a couple stops in the surrounding industrial areas before making our way to the hustle and bustle of the early morning produce markets near Downtown LA. Then some downtown alleyway stops, south through the city, and into Compton where we finished the first load, grossing out with about 9 tons of payload on the relatively heavy Mack MR. The packer shot at 1:05 shows what those 9 tons look like in a standard 40-ish yard Hardox body. Note the height of the packer relative to the body. With the Hardox model's lower profile the usual ½ height blade is really closer to ¾ of the height of the hopper. A quick jaunt (by LA freeway standards anyway) north led to Puente Hills Landfill to unload. At the time the largest active landfill site in the United States, I was lucky to experience the sheer scale of the Puente Hills operation one last time before it closed 2 weeks later on the 31st of the month. After dumping Hector had a few more stops in the industrial areas west of LA before finishing up for the day. The second half of the video shows Olympic's 320/Amrep roll off handling a 40yd box in the Montebello yard.
    Can't thank Richard at Olympic enough for setting up an amazing ride-along experience. Same goes for Hector, the man behind the wheel of the MR, for having me along. Props to Bill for putting up with my flatulence while I crashed at his place for a few days. Filmed February 13th and October 9th, 2013.

    Loved the packing/hopper shots of that Amrep front loader! That "half blade" design with the follower panel works well!! With most full height packer blades on front-load garbage trucks it seems like alot of trash falls back into the hopper after a pack cycle, also needs more cycling to keep the hopper more clear and also alot of trash bridges and comes up over the top of the compactor blade spilling in front of it making a mess to clean/shovel out later!

    I'll always be fond of the memories we made together with Richard. He was a fun guy to hang out with.

      ThaThunderStorm Sorry Dejuan. ;) Thinking back to the old Classic Refuse Trucks MSN Group, I think I recall you professing your love for the MR/Hardox pairing even back then. There were a couple examples on there as I remember; Ware Disposal, a new all white stock unit from Amrep, possibly an all black one as well? In any case the newest front loader in the Olympic fleet was yet another Mack/Amrep, this time the MRU and newer generation Hardox body. All blue w/ white cab, huge Olympic Disposal signage on the side, CNG of course. Bill should have pics. As far as I know UPW runs it now, for a while it was in Olympic's colors while under their ownership. No idea whether or not it's been repainted.

    Great job again! Love those Mack MR Amreps, those look really nice, especially in plain white. The packer shot was epic, it shows just how much Amreps can pack. I really wish that they had some out by me in Michigan. Good job on the video!

      garbageproductions1 I'm also pretty happy with how the packer shot turned out. Sort of a silver lining, the ride along was incredibly fun but running on like 2 hrs of sleep meant my "cameraman-ship" wasn't exactly up to par, this video has all I could salvage from the footage. That's only 9 tons you see in the body, most trucks will legally fit another ton. In bridge formula states these Amreps gross out long before they pack out. Not to knock the design though, half height blade with full follower is where it's at.

    Once again a great front loader video George, love your hopper shots! this one is your best. One of these days I would not be surprised to see a front loader video from inside the body!!! LOL! great work with all your videos really fun to watch. Great recorder too such detail and clarity on them keep em coming.

      +crafty .man Thanks! Yeah I prefer how the hopper shots turn out from the cabshield over the top of the body, you can see the actual crushing quite a bit better. Many more to come :)

    When I read you jumped the yard fence and went for a nap in a truck, I thought to myself "Wow that takes balls, George just does what he wants!" Then you mentioned it was all organised ;) I gotta say it wasn't as exciting watching the FL without the revs; the noise from a Mack adds the spice. On the other hand I respected the quick and smooth cycle time at idle, made for quite the effortless operation. Hands down the packing shot was the best part of the video for me! Looks like he still could've squeezed more into the body, but was 9t about the cut-off mark for a decent enough or legal load for this truck? I liked seeing the garbage in the body moving during the packing, plus hearing the creaking sound from the pressure. It's different looking down at the hopper floor and seeing the curved sides - is there some kind of design benefit or is it just Amrep's style? A sweet addition at the end with the roll-off, sounded really good that Pete. Imagine if you got the Mack doing it's first pick-up! :O

      MitchellM15 Yeah the lack of revs was a bit of a disappointment, there is literally an hour of footage that wasn't included because the action was slower yet. 9 tons is the legal limit on this one, I understand this generation of MR is relatively heavy. Most of this truck's Southern California peers will haul an extra ton legally and still be within the legal limit. With the curved sides you have less welding in the construction, and the body can be made lighter. A straight sided box needs comparatively heavier construction to stand the packing forces. Of course the most extreme examples of this are the Pak-Mor and Truxmore "barrel packers." I suspect the Mack wouldn't have sounded as nice, but I do love the look of a roll off with those saddle mounted CNG tanks.

    I thought this company was sold to UPW? That's what a driver from UPW told me, the Pete McNeilus is branded UPW and such, but I do remember Hector driving the Pete McNeilus on Thurs-Fri. I've always wanted to find that MR. Nice video George.

    Nice to see some of Olympic! Sucks they sold out. Pretty recently too, right? Anyway, I actually didn't know they had an MR/Hardox, so that was awesome. The packing shot helped me understand what 3/4 blade really meant. Loving the looks of that MR. Wonder if UPW painted over that truck. Roll Off was nice. Been hoping to see a fast, good sounding roll off video. How many trucks do they have? I was just looking at their yard a couple days ago, and they seem to have a good number of trucks, definitely at least twice more than I expected. Surprised this is all you got of Olympic, are you holding back some footage from us? Either way, I really enjoyed the video. Great work on this! Any plans to film UPW next time you're in SoCal? They have some neat old Maxons and an Amrep/STS hybrid or something weird like that lol Just a thought ;-)

    • @georgewuzheer
      @georgewuzheer  Před 9 lety

      Bill and I got to know the owner Richard, it made pretty good sense for him to sell out. UPW certainly isn't the worst buyer, possibly only NASA would be better. The thing about the packer is that it's generally considered to fall into the 1/2 height category, just that the Hardox is so short it works out to span more than 1/2 the hopper height. As for the whereabouts of this truck now you can look to Prince Motors' website. Can't remember exactly how many trucks, a handful of both roll offs and FLs. As always glad you liked it. :) Of course I wouldn't turn down the chance to catch UPW at work but as far as I know their fleet trends much newer now. Mammoths, Olympic's MRUs, etc.

      No can do. The company is long gone and truck sold off. I've got a video of an older Amrep Octo with the same packing principle: czcams.com/video/ubutMJnhxhE/video.html
