Hydro E-Z Pack: Magic Valley Disposal

- Take a journey with this crusty old Hydro E-Z Pack / IH Loadstar as it lumbers it's way back half a century to mid 60's rural America; specifically Hansen, Idaho. Visiting the Magic Valley really was a time trip, complete with period cars, friendly locals (including a run-in with a regular Andy Taylor), and of course trash collection.
The Hydro E-Z Pack side loader was a pivotal development in the fascinating history of refuse collection. Those interested in learning more should direct their attention to the E-Z Pack album at Classic Refuse Trucks: classicrefusetrucks.com Goes without saying that the IH Loadstar it rides atop is also a classic. I'm only guessing but I understand a 345 V8 is likely the source of that lovely gasser whine emanating from under the butterfly hood. However I'm happy to be corrected.
Props to Anthony the Garbage Guru for locating this time capsule of an operation in the first place, Zach and Bill for letting me tag along on their adventure, and of course the guys at Magic Valley Disposal: Raul (the driver here), Kenny (you'll meet him in a future upload), and everyone else were nothing short of accommodating. Unbelievable how long Magic Disposal ran these old side loader they got a few of these trucks.
You know, for this truck to last this long...this dude and his machine are one. That's impressive.
I couldn't imagine working on that truck nowadays after having a rear loader with cart tippers for years. Awesome video
Thanks! I dare say a couple high lift cart tippers would make these guys' job way easier.
Jesus watching this for the second time, its like going back in time! The scruffy looking guys with overalls, and I even heard Simon & Garfunkel coming form the truck! This is what youtube is all about !!
Hey I found you
This truck was slated for replacement in 1985, however it was delayed permanently due to budget cuts.
Hard to beleive this rig is still going! And its a gas 345 cui V8!
Watching this again. I still find It amazing they use this truck daily
Thats the very same kinda trucks we had when i was a kid .Nice to see this old stuff really nice!
That old timer was shaking hands with danger at 8:54!
Thanks George for sharing this with me. You know my love of the side loader old school trucks and I know this is my new favorite video on CZcams. Thanks for posting and I cant wait to see the other videos you told me about!!!
Look at this amazing piece of history! My lord this truck is so neat! It's insane to think these where some of the most advanced pieces of equipment back in there day, to what we have now. as rws626 said we have come a long long way, So awesome to see a nice little small local outfit that has survived the mega haulers though the years. It is outstanding they pretty much choose to keep running these classics. Not many haulers think that way anymore. Outstanding work documenting this beauty! Awesome work, truly awesome work!
I think 'savage' is the word I'm looking for to describe this truck, particularly the combined audio from engine and PTO...it's just all-around brutal. I love it. With those vicious retention teeth, the thickness of the blade/body construction, and aforementioned sound, this machine would be the nightmare of any young kid.
Everything you guys brought back from Magic Valley would have been kind of a disappointment had Raul not been so generous to stop at the next route day's dumpster and actually demonstrate that system that I've had my eyes on. And it looks like it relies heavily on gravity, lol, every time I watch I chuckle when that dumpster slams back to the ground. How much smaller are the less-cumbersome dumpsters?
Also a fan of the stenciled name, of course. Almost like it has faded just the right amount, too, for my satisfaction. Needless to say this was a colossal success.
Talk about narrowly avoiding disappointment. Our first day in Twin Falls was supposed to be devoted to the Hydro (and Super Pack) but after a couple hours it was looking like we might not get to film them at all, let alone that day. The only other side load dumpsters I saw were in the yard. They looked closer to this: www.classicrefusetrucks.com/images/a04i/a04-06.jpg You can see how the extra length on this one moves the center of gravity to a point less than ideal for proper lift function.
JJ jjjkkkk
I'm in love with this truck. It's nice looking.
Cool old truck!
THIS i what i call a garbage truck. I love the sound of these old IH Loadstars. These Loadstars were real medium duty trucks.
Good looking truck like the style way to go take care. Joe
This video reminds me of Sanford & Son!!!
these guys would not know what to do with an automated side loading truck.
And with what appears to be an original Harold Alexander-design container lift. It's like I died and woke up in trash truck heaven!
Wow!! Looks like something from the Soviet Union in the late 1960's.
Exactly!
Dang, you never fail to outdo yourself. True piece of industry history here, props to the company for keeping it up and running!
Through it was kinda cool the way the guys still dressed like vintage garbage men too, added some classic flair to the video vs standard PPE. Crazy to look at this and see how far we have come! And I have to give you credit, this is some of the best camerawork I have seen, even from someone like yourself
Funny you should mention keeping it up and running, it wasn't out on route our first day in Twin Falls. I think it was radiator trouble. Definitely a throwback all around, down to the music they were playing in the cab. Glad you liked it!
+rws676 I love your vids

Love the truck.. And the EZ Pack..
Holy shit!!! How in the world is this machine still alive and going?! That is beyond old school and I don't think the word vintage covers it either, maybe prehistoric and original :S I was waiting for it to take off and fall apart at any point during the video lol Magic Valley must be in the middle of nowhere after seeing this and what Bill videoed at 8:08. Bloody brilliant job getting something like this on video. I bet Eric was jumping up and down when he saw the pictures and action of these classics you guys got, must be all over CRT by now haha Gotta appreciate that old engine sound she lets off, a beautiful and steady growl during packing. The packing itself was pretty epic to witness! Close-ups were terrific showing the cylinder extending; combined with that blade it must pack decently. Oh almost forgot to mention the neat little container system they got; was hoping to see that lifting mechanism in action, would be interesting to check it out up close. Hmm awesome, awesome, awesome.....
Well those antique trucks of magic valley disposal are finally retired. Magic valley disposal closed its doors a year or so ago. Taking offers on trucks.
The 345 IH gasoline engine in those trucks will outlast most diesels, they were mad to do this all day everyday, something to be said about a tractor company that made trucks.
kooool as all can be i would drive and work a old truck like this
These older Garbage trucks are more harder to find to collect for history lessons
I'm glad we abandoned you with this truck George, I was nice to see new footage of it.
The square version of the barrel truck made by Truxmore with a milk cab .
Very cool old truck & great action you got!
Ad Rory
that's a really old truck but still functional
Such a classic! Amazing sounding truck, really liked that sound when it was packing. That dumpster collection was awesome. Are these guys the only hauler in the area? Seems like they got quite a few accounts which is great. Don't think they ever had to deal with boxes like at 9:50 back in the 60's haha Awesome video - this was great to see!
The dumpster was a real treat, Raul went out of his way to do a stop on the next day's route so we could see how the lift worked. Apparently that's one of the larger side load dumpsters they have, the smaller ones aren't such a hassle to dump. Plenty of other haulers in the area but customers really love Magic Valley Disposal. We got constant comments from residents about how great their service was. Lol yeah some of the trash betrays the video's actual "filmed on" date ;)
because OLED TV wasn't a thing 😂😂😂😂
The chassis has to be from a schoolie because the cab looks like it was custom fabricated and used the Loadstar front clip. Oh, and rare to hear a gas engine instead of a diesel on a garbage truck.
nice!
Nice IH but it looks like it will need a new frame the way the cab is leaning back and the hopper and the box are leaning forward at the same point on the truck
wouldnt be surprised if they nicknamed it something like "the dinosaur"
This is by far the oldest garbage truck i’ve seen so far how old Is that thing? It’s seem to be a very unefficient way to pick up garbage. On the other has this driver really earn his money.
hold up hold up at 1:46 was that a mattress in the hopper of the incredible rig?
Sure was. You can see it again at 2:07. Just goes to show the Hydro is more than capable of handling bulky waste so long as you can manage to wrestle it into the hopper.
it's a museum peace
Words fail me...
cool
I LIKE TO FOUND THE PACKMASTER COMPETITOR, THE EZPACK SUPER HOPPER REAR LOADER
Looks as if chassis is about to snap 😂
At 4:40 beating the bin was like spanking your child's backside
What year was this truck built?
It's me or the frame is bent and can be seen flexing when he packs at 1:10?
Simon Richard Probably. This thing is way past worn out.
do they recycle?
GASOLINE POWERED
They still around?
Is front of the truck a super mega old style International or a super mega old style Ford truck or what is it & what year is it?????🤨🤨🤨🤨🤔🤔🤔
Does this count as a csl
WOW JUST WOW 😯😯😯😮😮😮😳😳😳😲😲😲😱😱😱🤯🤯🤯
