- Remember the big turbo borg warner twinscroll 600hp setup we built? well this 290HP Stage 3.5 opel Z20let has a headgasket failure that was pressurizing the water coolant system, so we got about replacing it with high quality oem & Gm items.
Hope this helps alot of people out on there own projects

Sorry for the reupload guys! CZcams playing games again 🤣 enjoy/comment what you would like to see next. Im watching 🙌🏻
I thought I was losing my sh1t 😂😂
I kinda liked the 4:3 aspect ratio. Seemed period correct for the era of car you were working on.
More Evo stuff if possible :)
Would love to see you build a corsa c z20let some point mate love the content as always
Hi how can I get in touch off you to see if I can get my gsi engine rebuild from you .
It's inspiring how much effort you put into building these engines. I wish I lived a bit closer so i could get mine sorted once for for all. Problem after problem and off the road more than its on
I really want to see u restore a calibra. Time for the start of a totally new project?
Nice one for sorting the car Aaron. It’s driving so much better and pulls much harder on boost too 😎 time for some more upgrades now 👀👌🏻
Yes mate! MORE BOOOOOOSTSS 🌬
Love the reupload. Saw the first version as well. Both versions are mint.
Opel/Vauxhall lovers😩💪
One of the best cheap Eu cars ever!
Hi, from Russia. 😉What you use, for cleaning the pistons??
Watching from Australia Great video mate. You should do a video on the highest reliable bhp you can run from bolt on parts with a stock z20let internals for the people who can do abit but not too in-depth like rebuilding turbos etc like your other video. 🙏🏻
You are freaking so cool, obviously done this a few times, doing my timing belt at the momont and your tips are so cool.
Thanks man
Your attention to detail is second to none. 👍
Really insightful, Great Saturday morning content, Merry Christmas
So nice to see head without cracks around spark plugs, on other hand so sad when I see engine block cooling pathways so rusted. I honestly do not get it why people use tap water? Water is great in thermal conductivity, but all benefits go away once when block starts to rust. It could be head gasket failed due to that reason anyway, since heat is easier to build in the block and harder to transfer on to water when block is rusted. And there you go. One thing that can save the day is using undercut cylinder head bolts. When things get hot, claim is, it helps to save the day since undercut bolts allow elongation just as needed to save the head gasket. It is nice story from ARP, hope it is true. Like the video, thank you for sharing! and hope owner shall clean that rust and stop with tap water usage :)
Loved this one nice and long and lots of great tips, did all this to my Sri turbo a few years back and really enjoyed it.Once again thanks for making these vids on these cars really do Love them, more Astra vids always appreciated and driving vids would be good too, keep up the great work and have a great Xmas mate🙏👍
Glad to see it back 👍🏻any updates on the Fiesta?
Just about to attempt to do my head gasket myself so using your video for tips. What size tap did you use to clean out the head bolt holes?.
I’d love to see a turbo nova build or even just a nova build/resto
Beautiful machine. Magnificent work as always.
Love your vids mate, I think a voice over to describe your moves at the start would have been ace.
Would love to see a budget build. Source a z20 car and "fix it up" mechanically while still having a budget in mind. Would be cool to see how far you could go with say £2500 for everything
I have thought about projects like that in the future!
@@AaronUnknownPerformance mighr be difficult for ya as we all know the quality of your builds. Be cool to see what you prioritise with a budget.
Great informative video what did you use to clean the pistons
Great video Aaron, amazing work and explained beautifully as usual, sounded awesome 👌👍😃
Top vid Aaron your vids are all ways so helpful 👍
Great video thanks for sharing, useful info for my Meriva VXR!
Very thorough once again 👌
Great video. If you were local id defo have you do a alot of work. Very impressed
More evo content..and what happend to the fiesta rs turbo?..and get the escort rs turbo back out..need to see more driving video's of them please👍👍
Cracking video mate 👌I'm currently having issue with losing water not sure if it's the common fault with the oil cooler or head gasket but car losing water over night so hoping it's cooler 🙏but I've been thinking doing head gasket my self this really helped thank you where are you based please if decided to have it done and not do my self
excellent video many thanks
Fantastic 👏 thanks for sharing
Opel Zafira next.......Please......
Wicked video mate. Love your channel 👍
Love the use your ears son, That's Colin Chapman right there
I'm just happy to see videos on Astra G...
What's your engine capacity?
I have a 11.8 how do you make it fire?
Hi Aaron, great videos thanks. I see you’ve been asked what you use to clean carbon off with, can you let me know ? Thanks
Soak in Wd40 remove carbon with light scotch pad, clean with brake cleaner. Make sure to grease the cylinder walls for grit and clean well with clean rags
@@AaronUnknownPerformance thanks for that and keep the z20let content coming 👍🏻 Have a great Christmas
Do you have the link for the thread chaser tool
Quality video. Are you doing anymore work on the fords? What’s your plans with the fiesta
Well Aaron I am looking at a 06 Astra Z20let here in Ireland it's in a scrap yard selling complete the cat is gone off it I'm just wondering any tips on what to look out for on them engines
hi, you are doing great work. I want to change the cylinder gasket myself. How can I find out the tightening torque of the bolts. thanks
Aaron why did you not flow it whilst it is off? I’d love you to do a video showing how to do that! I’ve never built a one of these engines but I think after all your videos I could now! 😂
I want to see you working on my car in the next video 😉😂
Did you check to see which headbolts were loose / had lost their clamping force. Realistically most of the time you can eliminate the leak just by retorquing the head. This applies to just about everything with an aluminium head.
The head gasket had failed tho hadn't it ? From what I presumed , I'm sure he said the gasket had failed cylinder 2 between waterway and cylinder causing the water to clean the outer edge of the bore , so re-torque or stretching the headbolts wouldn't have any effect, once a gasket fails specially between a water way and oil way the only way to eliminate the effects is to replace the gasket . I suppose your method would kind of work if the gasket had failed to seal between a water/oil way and the outer edge of the engine as to the only issue being a fluid leak and no compression issue .
@@vanlivingandmagnetfishing5263 You learn to do that with every head. Then you learn much more. Head gaskets never "just fail", they have warning signs first. The only exception would be one of those stupid tunes with pops and bangs. There's just no sense in it at all.
Mr Uknown where can i get some high tensile bolts from for the majority of my build mainly want balance shaft delete bolts main cap bolts etc cheers for good content mate!
ill have some more stock on the website soon 🙌🏻
@@AaronUnknownPerformance Cracking stuff will keep an eye on the website 👍
Love it mate think I might have to do my vauxhall zafira 1.6 soon as the emissions are through the roof any ideas
Really want to see you do my car so I can watch 👀
Hi hi Aaron valve stem seals would you recommend victor reinz stem seals or stay original
Great informative video matey 👍
Top video 👍 quick question do you have a garage that’s like open to the public for Vauxhall repairs? As looking for a Vauxhall specialist
Great vid, Couple of questions, you know you have to fit the oil restrictor when fitting the VXR turbo to the Z20LET is this the case for Z20LEL/R?
Also is the stock 2.25" exhaust fine for VXR stage 1 power 260 - 270BHP? I have a LEL I fitted to a Astra H van, It runs 80mm MAF, VXR Injectors, VXR ECU so should be close to the VXR 236bhp on stock turbo / intercooler.
I have pre cat delete, stock centre cat, power flow centre section and it also had a power flow back box but was way too loud for a daily van so I fitted a stock Astra van back box still 2.25".
My Plan is to fit a VXR turbo ( already have a junk VXR turbo so will source a core) and a cheap front mount intercooler in the hope to run a healthy 260/270bhp. do you see any issues with the above?
Wow. Great work en like you're cars
Hi Aaron great video as always 👍
Were the retainers on the exhaust and inlet or just the inlet side?
Also that crank pulley is it a Courtenay one?
Retainers on both sides. Im not sure whos pulley that is sorry
@@AaronUnknownPerformance thanks for the reply Aaron appreciate it 👍
Amazing video
enjoyed watching this
Where abouts are you mate?? How much u charge? I need ring's doing on my forged z20leh
Top stuff as always 👍
I need a cylinder head to go on my z20let if you have one for sale UK.
I just test run the cylinder head i bought but I am using cam caps from my old engine, long story story, it has a fair bit of play in there.
If I put the cams and cam caps back in my damaged old head, its fine, no movement or rattle.
Yes cam caps are machine for the specific head they cannot be fitted to another head without machining. I do have spare heads
i have a z20let but i cant get any hand on the GM parts for rebuilding it... where can i get the parts for the engine?
Hey Bud, really considering one of these for a
Track toy, have heard mixed things on their handling. How have you found the handling and what specific upgrades have you done. Front and rear ARB and bushes? Thanks!
Astra's garage... 👍👍👍
Hi. What size is tap u use for the head bolts please?
Very helpful thank you, love you astra awesome
Hi Aaron, off the top of your head would you know the Bolt & thread size for the turbo oil return into the block? thanks
how did you clean the pistons?
where do you find all these genuine GM spare parts man?
How come you didn't put a new cam belt on? Great video as norm. Why you are not on 100K subs I will never know.......
It had a new cambelt, water pump etc about a month ago. It’s my car
@@allat5434 Oh well no point then if only a month. Cool car
Lookin Fresh
Any chance you could give my colt gti some love it’s all sweet just want it tearing down and checking as you the man 👌
Nice work 😎👍
How much do all the mods effect the insurance price compared to a standard car?
I used Ford Motorcraft RS Turbo spark plugs. I've read about the tips falling off the NGK ones. I did measure the plugs and the where the same length. Not sure on the gap though so left them as they come. Seem to work OK.
Hello mate. Why go that way cheap-not changing the timing belt, all the pulleys and water pump when do head gasket job?
This car had the water pump, cambelt, idler pulleys and tensioner replaced about 200miles ago. Check previous videos
What is the normal running temperature of an astra G opc/vxr? 90?
Where do you get the retainers from their own from?
Only ones I see are the red nevlock ones?
I got green SKF ones here, but do not know where to get the retainers from so they dont pop off.
RND motorsport
Hi how can I get you to do my engine rebuild. On my vauxhall zafira gsi
My Z20LET could use some love aswell :(
The bolts for the camshaft wheels have to be renewed every time they are loosened mate
Its definitely not necessary. Try find one thats snapped. Ive measured stretch on them in the past and no fatigue
@@AaronUnknownPerformance okay fine then, I just saw that Opel / gm recommends changing them mate
That's why always get new ones in
Yeah the manual does. I suppose if your are replacing them once only then its you may aswell replace, we normally have the pulleys off alot especially on the higher power builds
Method to clean block surface?
Ur mates must love you lol
Certainly I would if he make mine looks like the gems these Astras are!
Recommend 10w40 semi over a full synthetic? Even for z20leh with pressure and squirters
Cheers
Why 10w40 ? They recommendate me 5w30 for a Z20leh engine. Now i have doubts what oil is the best. 🤔
most petrol vauxhall engines with hydraulic lifters should use 5w30
How much for you to do my adtra h 1.8 sri gasket???
Having trouble with first gear linkage
Tpu definitely numbered them headbolts wrong
Which control device did you use to program the launch control?
Emtron standalone ecu
Thanks
Hi, what model of Astra has this engine in as standard?
Mk4 Astra Gsi, Astra Sri turbo 190, Astra Coupe Turbo
