  • In this video, I explain how to fly and intercept any radial. I do not get in-depth on how VOR's work, instead I wanted to show you a quick and easy way to set-up your NAV radio and intercept a radial signed by your instructor or examiner.

I understand VOR's however, Trying to do this under the hood flying by instruments only and holding my headings, altitude to ACS standards. I can manage to tune the two VOR's but trying to graph two lines on my Foreflight or paper maps to find my position is super difficult for me. I end up loosing my heading or altitude as I am under instrument. I can only take my eyes off the instruments for like 2 seconds at a time and that's not enough time for me to even try to start the graph line. Easy on the written exam but super hard doing it when flying under the hood. Is there any tricks to this. I have my Private Pilot check-ride coming up and need to find my position under the hood and stay in ACS standards. Any tricks. I do like you bugging at the 45 position as I was taking to long to intercept.

Interesting method. Students love it because it’s easy to understand. At my school, we take the difference between our current radial and the desired radial, double it, and add or subtract based on the direction of turn. It’s a little bit more complicated but the result is an optimal intercept angle. 45° can be a little too much or not enough depending on how far off course you are at the time. Great video!

Nice and easy concept to follow. Well explained and in general good video.
Although it won't work all the time. As a professional pilot I'll explain it briefly why and how to if you wanna make sure you are always on the right track.
Keep in mind the Distance from the VOR and especially on which radial you are on... eg. you are on Radial 210 (HDG 030) and you are instructed to fly on Radial 270 inbound (HDG 090). In this case you would fly North (HDG 360) to intercept. Makes sense. So you gonna turn left. With just simply a 45° Intercept Angle you would miss the VOR and intercept when flying outbound on the radial 090.
So if the two radials are close a rough interception of 45° works. Otherwise use the Formula D+30°. Meaning difference of Radials plus 30°. In my example. 270°-210° makes a differenz of 60°. Hence with the rule D+30°= 60°+30°= 90° intercept angle. HDG 090-90 makes you fly north.
Other example: Radial 260 inbound. Current Radial 240. Differenz = 20°; D+30=50° intercept angle. Radial 260 inbound means fly on HDG 080 (260-180)... Intercept course 030 (80°-50°)...
As you can see if the radials are close the rough 45° angle works really well and is suited for many situations, but if you wanna be sure at all times use the Formula D+30°
Obviously with the term HDG i was assuming that there is no wind, for those of you who would want to complain about that. ;)

Nice video. Well done. Keep in mind that ATC will give you a heading for the intercept. You likely won't be picking your own 45 degree intercept angle. Also, ATC usually gives an intercept radial TO a fix, not FROM (instructors, however, will give you all kinds of odd clearances to get you proficient). In that case you need to convert the radial to an inbound course to a fix (put the radial at the bottom of the case and the course will be at the top, if you're slow at math), which you discussed. It helps to have a chart displayed (a paper one is nice and won't get deleted) for situational awareness. Once you get everything set up, look at the chart to make sure the plane is going where you think it's going (it's easy to get radials and courses mixed up). Just like holding patterns, write down the clearance, draw a picture of it, set it up, and while flying it, double check everything. Single pilot without an autopilot IFR is the toughest flying you can do. It's a LOT easier in a jet, with a nice autopilot and crew.

hey, Alex, I dont think the first step, which is flying to the same direction (in your case 120) is necessary. after tune to 120 on OBS, the needle will give you the heading to turn. for a 90 degree intercept, you turn to 210. this will get you fast toward the radial. now, you have two directions to fly on this radial 120 or 300, if in your case, fly out bound heading 120, choose the heading in the middle of 120 and 210, which is about 170.
The to/from flag doesnt matter at all.
If in your location, you twist the OBS to 300, the CDI needle will swing to the left, but magically, the 90 degree interception angle is still 210 although this time, the needle is to the left. you still fly 210 to fly 90 degree toward the radial. then same choice, 120 or 300?
I feel that follow my method, you wont need to worry about to and flow flag at all, and it applies to all situations. you don't even need to know what you location relative to the VOR, just follow the instruction, almost like ATC giving you vectors.

The only thing to keep in mind - DISTANCE to the VOR. Sometimes 45° won't get you to the radial intercept. If it's close, maybe 90° is needed for intercept.
