So this is another video I did for a code set in the powertrain control module p0390 exhausted VCT solenoid same side as this truck except different situation... I had the same Issue with my 2019 and I hooked up my snapon Zeus and looked at the intake desired minus actual bank 1 and the same for bank 2 and the graph for bank 2 had nice sharp up and down valleys and crests but bank 1 had smooth large lazy valleys and crest , it wasn't until i showed the snap shot of the comparison of the two banks to a for tech at the dealer that they actually replaced the intake soleniod on the same side that you did then i started having issues with the phasers clacking like someone hitting the engine with a hammer under load with a load of pellets in the the back or going up a steep incline going into passing gear or around slightly open throttle at 1500 rpms , I explained this to the tech and they said they couldn't duplicate this condition after waiting 2 mounths to get in to the dealership because of backlogs due to covid and short staffing , now that its cold out its doing that rattle again before it warms up like the old 6.0s on deccel . I bought this truck used from the dealer with 53000 miles on it and my warranty is up at 60,000 miles and I'm concerned that I'm going to eat a phaser job on my truck . Ive owned a lot of Fords through the years , and and this is the first time Ive felt helpless on any repairs . any suggestions ?

I have the same sound on my 5.0. The dealer AND an independent shop were charging me 6k to replace the cam phasers. Had 1 more guy look at like and said it was a solenoid. $300 fix. Thank God.

I was going to buy a 2019 F150 5.0 but did a bunch of research first. Found tons of information on Ford having to buy back Mustangs and F150’s because of issues with the 2018 5.0 engine redesign, multiple problems. I’ve never liked turbo engines and would never consider one until I purchased my 2019 ecoboost instead. 21,000 miles with zero issues so far.
My 2020 F150 5.0 does it when cold or still warming back up to operating temperature, it's most obvious leaving a neighborhood or parking lot where you're coasting on and off the gas. Thank you for posting this.
My 2019 does the same, but no MIL or codes. It goes away once the engine temp reaches 135 to 140 degree. Brand new engine that was replaced at 15k for oil consumption. The new engine makes this same noise as my old one. I wonder if they will fix without any codes or MIL? Quiet when it warms up, but it is annoying as hell, especially in MN winter.
@@trentm1 you could try and bring it to your dealers attention with the bulletin information posted in the video and see if they want to help you. As long as mine does it only when the engine is cold with no CEL, I'm assuming it's just cam phaser/solenoid sensitivity until the oil gets up to temperature.

My 2018 was making the same noise on decel. Brought it in to dealer multiple times for them to tell me it’s normal. Finally it started stalling out on me and showed a check engine for p0394 and p0390. Now it’s at shop getting that same tsb for Vct solenoid
Yes!!! I’m so glad you’ve come across this issue. Please keep us posted and let us know what FORD is going to do to help us get this fixed. This should be a recall. Has Ford issued a new TSB for the 18 - 2354? Thank you

Independent post I already show people how to do the repair it was an old video that I forgot that I had where I actually walk people through the whole entire process
Ive had my dealer replace the VCT solenoid. Rattle still there. Warranty ran out. I took my truck to another shop and theyre saying its the phasers. My truck is making the EXACT same noise. Same codes. Its worse when the truck is cold and then quiets down when its warm but the rattle is still there. Any advice? Could it be that the replacement VCT solenoid was faulty? Also, when i have a fresh oil change done, the rattle is extremely quiet for a couple of days.
Hard to believe they will put out a truck for $60k and it is supposed to sound like that. This is my 4th F150 and will be my last with the quality they put out.
Theres a PCM recal for that rattle on decel or tip in throttle. If it doesn't go away replace exhaust phasers. Watch VCT_EXH_DIF1/2 PID under brake torque, you can see them become erratic. The exhaust phasers are the same "pancake" design as the 2nd gen 3.5's with all the phaser rattle issues.
@@FordBossMe Right on I'll check it out. The fun ones are when they come in for rattle noise w/CEL because there's no oil on the dipstick due to consumption. Hot mess.
I’ve had a rattle on my 18 F150 5.0 for a bit now and trying to pinpoint where it’s coming from. Saw this and went out to my truck and brake torqued with the window down and heard it! So definitely seems to be my issue as well. I’m curious though if what I had been hearing is related. Regardless if the engine is warm or cold, somewhere around 1500-2000 RPMs, typically at/after a shift point and seems to be in lower gears (less than 6), I’ll get a faint rattle until RPM climbs. If I’m heavy on the throttle or have the radio on, I don’t hear it. Yesterday I towed a trailer for a bit and it seemed to be much more prominent. I saw another video of an issue with the IWE check valve, which my comparing symptoms, seems to be consistent with mine, but couldn’t hear the noise in their video very well; I tried to record my noise on the drive home yesterday and only barely heard it once through all other road noise and vibrations. Any thoughts?
Oh, I didn’t catch that the solenoid replacement doesn’t necessarily fix the rattle! That saved me a bunch of money and frustration! lol That “normal” is still so stressful! I was convinced once I started pulling the trailer that my timing chain was about to throw everything off and blow the motor 😅 Appreciate your content, intel, and reply!
I have a 2018 F-150 with the 5.0L that has made this sound almost since new. Did I understand this correctly that the sound usually starts after an oil change? Why is that? Is it possibly because when the old oil is drained there is a period where the VCT solenoid is running on air and not oil? Is it more of an oil starvation issue because of an air "pocket"? Is that also why the noise eventually comes back even after VCT solenoid replacement and probably after the next oil change? Should there be some sort of check valve in the solenoid to prevent oil drainback? Now for the real question...was this corrected on the Gen 4 Coyote? I test drove a dealer demo 2023 Tremor with the 5.0L and it was whisper quite compared to my '18. It only had a little under 1400 miles on it so it probably hasn't had its first oil change yet...
It doesn't really start after an oil change it's pretty much there all the time and what Ford says is the sound actually doesn't go away even if you change the solenoids it will eventually come back there's several check valves in the solenoids that end up causing this problem that really they say isn't a problem
Love the videos brother. Have you dealt with many cars/trucks with SSM 49761? Coulda sworn my 2011 Mustang was knocking under 1500RPM but then the dealer hit me with that and said it was fine. Still runs mint though
Not familiar with that TSB I don't even know what that TSB is to be honest with you just because I have to see so many of them everyday I don't remember certain ones
I know this is a little bit different sound on the 5.0 l but the sound that you're hearing on the 3.5 is a little bit more deeper and it a little bit more violent
My 2018 F150 5.0 makes the exact sound as this truck on deceleration at low rpm. I replaced intake and exhaust solenoid on driver side. Which I swore I felt it and heard it with a stethoscope coming from the exhaust solenoid and it's still making the sound. So my question is could it be on the passenger side or is it always on the drivers side. Is it hard to do the passenger side? I have the parts
mine does has this damn rattling noise, i have a code for "oil pressure". i've had it shut completely off on me various times. one day it's running perfectly fine, next day that same code comes up and the engine just throws a fit. it's ridiculous man.
Mine has been messed up at under 100 miles... and ever dealership in my area has been blowing me off about a fix... saying its normal.. Got to love Colorado... SMH
Help! 2018 F-150 5.0 39,000miles. Rattle/grind during light acceleration. IWE’s checked. Two shops can’t figure it out. First shop listened with stethoscope to cam phasers and timing chain said those were good. He says the noise is coming from the passenger side on top of the engine. He checked the intake runners and said those were good too.
You're describing an issue I complained to corporate and a dealer about my 2018 two years ago! This was never corrected, I was told that is simply how the engines operate. What the hell. Why does this not cover the 2018's as well? That engine sounds EXACTLY like mine...
My 2020 5.0L does it off decel especially on a cold crank. Dealership heard it but said it’s “normal” and no codes. Any other way to get them to investigate it further without any MIL?
Have a got a 2020 with same issues seams on to be when not up to temp, no check engine haven’t brought it to the dealer cause of what I’m reading and no check engine, is it worth replacing
No where have i seen that there is any detrimental long term issues associated with the cold rattle. Is this an issue that one really needs to pursue a fix for?
My ‘18 3.5 EB does the exact same thing, until warmed up. Off throttle at 1,500 rpm decel rattle. Has 30k on the odometer now. Any long term effects from this?
Broooo I need some wisdom. My 5.0 (2019) has every rattle there is. The most annoying one is the low rpm 1-1500 clank. Like tap tap tap. Sounds like marbles in my headers but only while driving and low speed/rpm. Ford had it again all week and said they can’t find it but hear it. I’ve had the vct solenoid, vacuum valve and heat shields checked. All are either the right ones (blue vacuum link) or solid welds/clamps on the shields. What the hell else could it be ?????? Please help. I did do a resonator delete and seems to be more clear clack clack clack
These things make so many tapping rattling noises man it's unreal and you're not going to get them to go away and the best thing for you to do is create your own CZcams channel which you obviously have here because you're commenting on mine and start posting some of the videos there and then tagging me and then we're sharing the link with me to the video so I can tell you if it's normal or not
I know this one is a hot topic with the 2018-2020 5.0s. Did they update any of the replacement parts that will be thrown at it to “cure” it. Cam phasers, VCTs? Just curious if the solution putting the same exact parts in. I’ve had this rattle when cold since new on my 19 5.0. Dealer couldn’t replicate…after a week.
Just bought a used 2018 f150 w/156k. Drove it home from the used car dealership. Right away got the check engine light pulled into my driveway heard a rattle had no idea. Towed to the dealers shop. He said the oil was so black that he thinks it might have been jamming up the VCT thingy. I hadn't owned the truck 24 hours when this happened. The dealership was nice enough to go in halves with me :/. It was a fleet truck but evidently I'm thinking it might have been a Govt fleet... I'm wondering what the chances are this will take care of it ?
Dang.. this is EXACTALLY what I am getting 2019 F150 5.0L with 53000kms (about 33000 miles) Accelerate easy.. let off the gas.. and you get that relay noise! Dealer said it was normal.. no big deal. (at 60000kms my bumper to bumper is over and 100000kms warranty is over) So now I can go there with the SSM #. Question.. I have no check engine light.. my cheap-o scan meter shows no errors.. are the PCM errors not visible to a $100 scan meter? (forscan shows no error codes either..)
I have a 2019 doing the shuttering/ rattling when letting off the pedal it sends excess smoke out the tail pipe engine light is on and and reads a code for “fuel/gas mixture imbalance” any thoughts?
Well I guess I learned that my truck isn't supposed to make that sound, I just figured it was some whizbangery happening. 2020 with the 5.0 and 12k miles, definitely that sound but no codes though
2019 w/20k here, and it's been making that sound basically since I got it. This is the first time I've seen a cause. All the threads I've read said that Ford said it's "normal."
I had that concern on my 5.0 2018 since it was still under powertrain warranty I took it to the dealer but they replaced all 4 vvt solenoids and did a pcm flash still does it I started to think it was normal
My 2017 f 150 5.0 has the whole stalls at stop light deal. Will the vct solenoid fix that? No check engine light. Some people say that's the fix others say it starts doing it again after replacing them. First ford I have ever bought. Really loved this truck until it started doing this.
@rogerrabbit8756 Yea, I've heard it always still does it even after replacing. I've also heard cam phasers. It's like once it starts stalling, it's running like crap , shuddering like crazy. This is the most bouncy and vibrating truck I have ever had. But I feel like what ever this issue is is causing most of it.
@rogerrabbit8756 Mine is still doing the same thing. I ended up having converter shudder so I wanted to get that fixed to see if it was causing the stalling. After getting a new trans , it still does the same thing. Haven't taken it in yet because their is no check engine light and I feel like they will drive it for 5 min, say everything is fine.
I am having this same issue at 12k miles on my 19 5.0L. Problem is the dealership "can't duplicate the noise" and they refuse to let me play this video for them! Smh...

Im lookin imto a 2011 5.0 and ifs got that rattle. Went away after it warmed up. Good to know its not really high priority but should be looked at eventually
Please post a video of the repair and how it sounds with the new solenoid. I’ve had this issue since day 1 on my 2018. Thanks!!
Independent post I already show people how to do the repair it was an old video that I forgot that I had where I actually walk people through the whole entire process
When I'm done putting the solenoid and I will do a follow-up video to show what the sound is like but there's already a video posted up top
Thank you for this video, my asshole deal said they don't know what the problem is and tuff luck!!
And even when you replace the solenoid it comes back they said it's because of all the different check valves that are in the solenoid it's normal
Hard to believe they will put out a truck for $60k and it is supposed to sound like that. This is my 4th F150 and will be my last with the quality they put out.
i'm just gona keep my 96 f150 5.0 175k running good
Is this the same for the 18-20 3.5? Is there a video on how to re install the valve covers on a 3.5 eco 18-20
Thats how i diagnose them, i have a video on it
@@FordBossMe Right on I'll check it out.
It could be the same sound but just know that sometimes replacing the VCT solenoids doesn't fix the sound now Ford says it's normal
Oh, I didn’t catch that the solenoid replacement doesn’t necessarily fix the rattle! That saved me a bunch of money and frustration! lol
That “normal” is still so stressful! I was convinced once I started pulling the trailer that my timing chain was about to throw everything off and blow the motor 😅
Appreciate your content, intel, and reply!
I’ve had mine replaced today . It wasn’t rattling before . Now that the new solenoid is in. Now it’s rattling
It's possible it's bad
Why did you have something replaced that didn't need to be replaced
So i have this rattle when i let off the throttle but no check engine light could it still be the VCTs or should i start looking into other problems
2018 5.0. Dealer says this sound is normal, did the PCM update, sound is still here. How much damage is this actually causing?
Mine rattles on start up. I hear it's the cam phasers going bad but I wonder if it is actually the solenoid that is the problem.
Great video brother
Tyvm
Jake break option ? LOL Have a great day.
Ive got a 2018 F-150 5.0 with 50,000 miles doing the exact same thing.
I think the 2.7 has the least issues as of 18+
My 2020 with 23000 mile is under factory warranty but they said Ford is not going to do anything about the rattling
12k miles, Unreal FORD!
Mine makes a knocking sound on acceleration but doesn’t do it all the time
You'll make it right. 👍
Should this be covered under powertrain warranty?
@@FordBossMe fair enough! It has to do with "typewriter tick" for 5.0 after an oil change. (I do my oil every 5000km/3000miles)
Are these same VCT rattle issues present with the 3.5L Ecoboost? I get a rattle on start-up/when cold. Only 1500 miles on the truck.
It ain't hard to do it you just have to be careful if the high pressure pump is in your valve cover
mine does has this damn rattling noise, i have a code for "oil pressure". i've had it shut completely off on me various times. one day it's running perfectly fine, next day that same code comes up and the engine just throws a fit. it's ridiculous man.
Mine has been messed up at under 100 miles... and ever dealership in my area has been blowing me off about a fix... saying its normal.. Got to love Colorado... SMH
On my 2020 Mustang this happens but in another way. If I Rev to 2500rpm in neutral it will be as loud as anything rattling away
The rattle sound comes right back after replacing the solenoids ford now says that's normal
You're describing an issue I complained to corporate and a dealer about my 2018 two years ago! This was never corrected, I was told that is simply how the engines operate. What the hell. Why does this not cover the 2018's as well? That engine sounds EXACTLY like mine...
I would love an answer to this as well. My 2018 has had the noise since I picked it up w/ 5 miles on the odo.
My 18 had the vct solenoids replaced under the power train warranty a couple weeks ago. Noise is gone
@@epicclips456 was there a TSB to get this replaced or did you just asked to get them replaced? My 18 is doing it really loud.
My 2020 5.0L does it off decel especially on a cold crank. Dealership heard it but said it’s “normal” and no codes. Any other way to get them to investigate it further without any MIL?
The last couple that I did it came right back just a few months after replacing so they may be right I don't know
Have a got a 2020 with same issues seams on to be when not up to temp, no check engine haven’t brought it to the dealer cause of what I’m reading and no check engine, is it worth replacing
It ends up coming back even if you replace it almost right away sometimes so just leave it deal with it
“Brrrrr! What happen to that boy!”
No where have i seen that there is any detrimental long term issues associated with the cold rattle. Is this an issue that one really needs to pursue a fix for?
Cold Start rattle could potentially turn into a vehicle sounding like it's dieseling
If it's just on start up nothing will probably come of it
My ‘18 3.5 EB does the exact same thing, until warmed up. Off throttle at 1,500 rpm decel rattle. Has 30k on the odometer now. Any long term effects from this?
Did you end up getting a fix? I have a 17 3.5 and it’s rattles on deceleration until it warms up
@@bgenesis12 they did the ECU flash in a recall and it fixed the problem
I have this happening to my 2018 F150 right now, Ford told me that it’s normal engine operation
What ever happened to the K.I.S.S. rule?
Does the 3.3 have similar problems?
These things make so many tapping rattling noises man it's unreal and you're not going to get them to go away and the best thing for you to do is create your own CZcams channel which you obviously have here because you're commenting on mine and start posting some of the videos there and then tagging me and then we're sharing the link with me to the video so I can tell you if it's normal or not
Thanks!
what's up with these trucks ...I just paid for a bad injector...and less than 6 weeks now a VVT Solenoid ...
f150 2020 different issue code p219b light on reset light came back in 3day no leaks found need help tanks
Crapper tank sounds like a wood chipper!
I get that noise too but only around 30-40 mph could it be the same problem or something else? Really appreciate the videos you help so fucken much 🙏🙏
Could be the same but after a few months even with the new one it comes back
I know this one is a hot topic with the 2018-2020 5.0s. Did they update any of the replacement parts that will be thrown at it to “cure” it. Cam phasers, VCTs? Just curious if the solution putting the same exact parts in. I’ve had this rattle when cold since new on my 19 5.0. Dealer couldn’t replicate…after a week.
I've done several of these on the intake side and it has fixed it and not come back but I don't know if this is going to fix it on this one
@@FordBossMe thanks for posting this. Such a hot topic on these gen 3 coyotes.
Thanks
Just bought a used 2018 f150 w/156k. Drove it home from the used car dealership. Right away got the check engine light pulled into my driveway heard a rattle had no idea. Towed to the dealers shop. He said the oil was so black that he thinks it might have been jamming up the VCT thingy. I hadn't owned the truck 24 hours when this happened. The dealership was nice enough to go in halves with me :/. It was a fleet truck but evidently I'm thinking it might have been a Govt fleet... I'm wondering what the chances are this will take care of it ?
Prob needs chains and phasers also
Dang.. this is EXACTALLY what I am getting 2019 F150 5.0L with 53000kms (about 33000 miles) Accelerate easy.. let off the gas.. and you get that relay noise! (forscan shows no error codes either..)
oh.. noise goes away after engine warms up.. is that normal too?
They're going to tell you it's a characteristic of the timing components
This rattle never really goes away
@@FordBossMe Should I argue it?
@@FordBossMe Thanks for all the great info and videos!
I have a 2019 doing the shuttering/ rattling when letting off the pedal it sends excess smoke out the tail pipe engine light is on and and reads a code for “fuel/gas mixture imbalance” any thoughts?
No I don't even want to think about that LOL you got some major issues going on if you got smoke coming out of the tailpipe on deceleration
Update? Mt 2018 5.0 did the same thing. Replaced solenoids, worked for a year. Now stalling again.
Thanks again
I am having this same issue at 12k miles on my 19 5.0L. Problem is the dealership "can't duplicate the noise" and they refuse to let me play this video for them! Smh...
Dealer wording for “we’re too lazy.”
