Been a ford man all my life and come from a long line of ford lovers. They have abandoned theyre values to longevity. They build nothing but trash now.If it was a pushrod engine it would live but it wears panties like it needs to sissy weak trash.Have a 2019 Expedition Platinum Max $80,000.00 vehicle top of the line ,58000 miles out of warranty ford wont touch it.First start it sounds like a bag of rocks rolling across a garbage can lid then throws a p0022 code.If this trash cant make it 60000 miles without a failure i dont need it. ive changed oil every 3500 miles since new.Ive turned wrenches for 40 years of my life and have never seen ill built trash like this unless it was a Caterpillar.Going to trade it tomorrow for a suburban and 16 fleet trucks will be dodge 5500 as soon as they can get them.Sad but the engineers at ford have 1 thumb in theyre ass and 1 thumb in theyre mouth and are waiting for somebody to say switch.

@@philiplaflam7972 when was the last time a worker actually made any kind of a big decision in a company? Management, CEO, and investors' board made these decisions. That comes down to capitalists and their henchmen and these decisions were made with profit in mind. Profit fucks us all over and is both but theft. But when I bought this truck I updated all the timing components, spark plugs etc. Even down to the turbos and coolant lines etc. I didn't know the history on it so that's why I done it. And when I tore it down it was actually really clean and taken care of but just for my piece of mind I done all that.

Great video, super helpful info to get a basic understanding on and other things to consider. I’m in Canada, VCT solenoids alone are $1,100 all in which they said a big chunk is labour. Any time I’m told that it perks my interest to videos like this thinking if they’re already going shoulders deep into the engine then what else makes sense to tackle now and save some labour cost rather than waiting 6-12 months for another bill. 250,000Km on my 5.0 and still going. My piggy bank got fat (I had the money) but my regular mechanic said he would do it, but then when I went to pick-up my truck, he says that I didn't need to do all that work. He just changed a coil & spark plug, the engine light went out. But my engine light came back ON after a few months. Before I took it to my mechanic, the light went OFF on its own! A few months later, it came back ON after driving it about 800 miles. I mentioned this to my mechanic and told him I was going to take it to him, then the dumb engine light went OFF again. Right now it's OFF, but I have a feeling it will come back ON again eventually. I can't find a good master mechanic near Houston, Texas. I'm not taking it back to my regular mechanic (fair price kind of guy, that's why I love taking my vehicles to him). The truck runs great, even when the engine light comes ON, but lately, I noticed it loses power when the engine is nice and warmed-up. It still drives, but I can tell is not accelerating properly. I would hate for it to stall on me at a traffic light. (yikes) Anyway, that's my update. I will probably take it to another mechanic, but hopefully I can find a master mechanic to change my phasers, timing chain, tensioners, water pump, etc.

You sir give me hope for the world. If only more people took pride in their work, and did the right thing when nobody was looking, it would be a better place. My local Ford dealer didn’t even bother to remove old wheel weights from les Schwab when I bought new tires from them. They just slapped some more weight on and counterbalanced. That’s why I do all my own PM and repairs. I’d do my tires too, but don’t have a balance machine lol

I did all my oil changes on time and it still happened to mine , I got ford to fix it 12,000km after the warranty was over it started at 60,000km and I fought with them till I had 132,000km and they finally fixed it with no engine light on because they cleared the code a while back and it wouldn't come back on ,that was their excuse saying no engine light no fix under warranty until I ran out of warranty. It got to the point of me threatening to burn down their dealership and told them to call the cops because I was about K.O everyone in their shop, luckily they had just hired a new shop manager and he pulled up my trucks history of problems then took it for a ride , came back said it would be fixed under warranty , thanks to this awesome manager and his brother who also got hired at the time , he's their head mechanic now . Without those 2 guys I would be in prison and there would be no ford dealership in my home town . Thanks to Pat and Eric at lecours motor sales , ford doesn't realize how much they owe these 2 guy's.

Dodge dealer in Washington' nc did something very similar to me with a Ruff shifting transmission in a pacifica telling my wife it's her driving or it's normal, warranties are worthless when they get to decide if it's covered or not. I'm 100% for small government but these are great examples of when a government should step in and protect the victims of these bad car manufacturers and dealerships. But unfortunately our government made it clear who they are in bed with when they unconstitionally gave them handouts.

I currently have a 2016 3.5 Ecoboost F150, which I bought 'preowned'. When I purchased it, I found all/any warranty work, service where done at the same location the truck was bought new! So, I went to that dealer, and they printed out every single time the truck was in, and what it was in for...including oil changes. It obviously always had oil changes within a reasonable time, and it was the Motorcraft synthetic blend oil used, and the only time it didn't (but had a full synthetic used) was the non-Ford dealer that sold it to me, and they put all new brakes and rotors on as well. I'm currently at 127,000 miles, and the engine runs perfect. The only main issue, was it had one exhaust manifold changed on it, and one water pump, but has been good ever since. I did add a 'catch-can' to the truck to help hold off the majority of the gunk from the PVC, other than that all is OEM. I love the truck, as it has all the options I'd want in a truck, so I would certainly have VCT Phaser's replaced if/when they may go out, and I'd have a new chain and any other parts upgraded as well, 'but' my question would be, (unsure if there is anything that would fix this, or if I should) are the heads, as being a 2016 it would have the PVC being returned and mucking up the valves)? Not sure if one should change the heads at the point if the body is off the truck in having the heads cleaned & replaced, new heads or whether to bother with it at all? I'm just thinking 'Longevity' of this truck, so looking for information on if it would be smart to think about this possible head issue, or just do the phaser work? By the way, I drive my truck for getting the best fuel mileage, so it's not driven hard at all, with minimal if any towing.

I have a 2017 F150 Platinum 3.5 ecoboost with 48k miles on it. I recently heard a slight knock in the engine. I took it to the dealership and they diagnosised the the issue you have described in you video (cam solenoid).
The remedy you described to prevent the issue, changing oil every 4-5k miles didn't work for me. The dealer changed the oil with the synthetic blend a couple of times at 3-5k miles. Then I had them to use their Motocraft full synthetic a couple of times. Then more recently I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30. Each oil change was no more than 5k miles, yet I developed the cam solenoid issue. My truck never had a check engine light or any malfunction light, I just noticed a slight knock when I was under the hood changing out the battery. Had I not been outside of the vehicle with the hood open and motor running, I may not have heard the knocking, but I cought it early.
My question is since I changed my oil with synthetic oil at no more than 5k miles what can I do to prevent the cam solenoid issue from reoccurring?

    • @FlyingWrenches13
      @FlyingWrenches13  Před 3 lety

The main thing that changing your oil regularly will prevent is engine sludge. Was it setting any dtcs? Also is this a 3.5 or a 5.0? Most of the time the 5.0s don’t make any noise they just set a dtc. The 3.5 is the one that’s bad about rattling.

Great video! I appreciate the details you add to your explanation.
One thing worth noting is that Ford's related bulletin (SSM 48423) calls for mechanics to only replace the VCT solenoid, and that's only after forcing the solenoid to cycle 10 or so times manually to try and "clear the blockage". In my opinion if you're having issues with solenoid sticking you're not going to fix it on any long term basis by repeatedly cycling the plunger. You might get it to go but soon enough you'll be back at it.
The bulletin doesn't mention the phasers at all. I'm looking at a 2019 F-150 where the dealer is replacing the solenoid after getting a P0022 error code.
Should I be asking them replace the phaser at the same time before I buy??

My dealer when I where I bought the truck gives you a Lifetime Warranty on the drive train if you have them change the oil every 5,000. Miles thank goodness! My 2012 eco got Timing chain rattle at 80,000. Only after sitting overnight on start up so I traded it in!

Yeah that’s a real common issue on the 3.5. They actually just came out with a recall to update software because of the rattle.

Thanks for this video, great job of explaining the problem. I've got a 2018 F150 with about 40K on it and just got a letter about CSP 21B10, 21N03 and, 21N08 from Ford last week. The letter says I have until Feb 28, 2022 to get the PCM update. I haven't had the rattle noise yet, but I've been having the oil changed at Opelika Ford about every 5K. Would like to know what you think about adding an oil separator.

Thank you! Catch cans work awesome on these engines! I think they are very helpful on any turbo engine. I actually have a video that should be coming out in the next couple weeks after editing about the recalls. Maybe it will clarify some of the info about the recalls.

Great vid. A lot of good info. Have you ran into any deceleration rattles in the 18-20 f150s? My ‘19 f150 5.0 had some oil consumption issues, brought in for the TSB and switched out the pcv to diff design. No oil loss checking every 1000 miles for the past 5000. Still have that darn deceleration rattle that my dealer could not reproduce. Happens on cold soak, put in drive and accelerate then let off completely and rattle rattle rattle.

I haven’t seen thaton any yet. I know those 18 plus 5.0s are terrible about making all kind of noises that Ford calls “normal”.

2018 5.0 here in Canada with the same noise. It's been into the shop 3 times and no resolution from the dealer, aside from the TSB, Sitting at 70k. All I can hope for is a massive recall or the engine blows before the 100k warranty.

I pull out of Taco Bell and I get the code. I call Jimbo up and tell him he can have some tacos if he will help me diagnose my truck. I’m keeping the burrito supreme and the nachos for myself because I am hungry.

I don’t. I’d like to make one but the truth is it would be such a long video im not sure if anyone would watch it. I’m going to try to do one showing how to time the 3.5 & 5.0 on the next one I tear apart.

1 - You are my hero. I need to figure out which dealership you're at so I can thank you.
2 - With regard to avoiding the issue by getting consistent il changes, I got the extended maintenance plan when I got my new '16 F150 5.0. Got the oil changed every 5-7.5K miles - except for once when I waited 10K - and I still had symptoms at 60-75K. It was rough idling at stop lights intermittently and started doing it every time around and shutting off around 80k.

Removing the cab makes sense it's the same debate I have with doing valve stem seals on the new V8 bmw's. You can do it in the car but dropping the engine out makes it so much easier. Just sad that VCT technology has been out so long that this is still a common issue for the 3.5 ford's. I agree tho change the oil every 5k no matter what the engine is. All of us techs are inside these engines and the one common across any brand is engines changed every 5k look better and have less issues then the ones that go 10-15k.

@@FlyingWrenches13 I've worked for almost every high end German brand. I did 7yrs with VW got master certified then went to an independent for 4 yrs and worked on everything from ford's to all exotics then moved to VA and worked for bmw for 1.5yrs and got level 2 certified. Then I went and worked for Lamborghini/McLaren for 2 yrs and I'm master certified in both of those brands. I now work for a super private independent shop doin very high end modifications on high end vehicles. We are a Brabus dealer, Novatech dealer, Mansory dealer, and a big Vossen dealer. So we do a lot of cool stuff. I'm salary now so no more hustling flat rate every day. Love what I do now! I also get to meat a lot of cool people like athletes and people like Tiesto. We do a lot of raptor builds for clients and I see this issue a lot that's what brought me to this video. Just had a clients 2017 raptor at ford to get the rattling adjusters fixed and they just updated the pcm. The rattling is still there but not as bad.

That’s cool man! I generally try to stay away from the exotics but every now and then I’ll get sucked into working on a bmw or Mercedes. Flat rate hustle is all I know. I’ve never even worked a job that paid me by the hour. I like it for the most part but there are those weeks that a salary would be nice!
