Sea guard are actually better than spearman by a low margin. Sea guard are actually really good in place of archers because they make a solid back up line.
I really liked it - want more.
It's going to be fun to continue this, livestream material, guess 3-4 hours before you'll become op in this campaing

I’ve never liked how level 5 walls for high elves are worse than the level 4. Yes you get 7 units instead of 6 but you trade 3 LSG for 4 white lions which are trash in sieges
Sea Guard are great for their flexibility. One or two units of them can chip in to shooting while the enemy hits the front line, and can then step up to fill in gaps should there be breakthrough. They work well to supplement a balanced infantry army, not to replace one.
That's more or less my thoughts on them. Their role is to be a tactically flexible unit that starts the battle as archers and ends it by being fresh spearmen units to finish the enemy off in support of the main front line, filling both roles over the course of the battle when it is tactically at its most useful.
Followup: they're decent early-mid game flank units, since they can shoot skirmish cavalry, the shielded versions are relatively good at resisting return fire, and they get spearmen benefits against being charged by said skirmish cavalry. Having a couple of units of shielded sea guard on the edges of an infantry block is not a terrible life choice, especially against marauder cavalry.

I would definitely watch a part 2 to see how you clean up Lothern and if you stay in the old world or abandon Myrmidons to get back to Ulthuan.
Part 2 please, this “saving campaigns” so good, really hard to predict what moves will be use next, so please make a second part Legend.
Wish White Lions were buffed to be a viable stepping stone to Swords of Hoeth.
their table top counterpart has a 2+ save against missiles, which is really their biggest selling point over swordmasters. clearly it's been badly translated into the game for some balancing reason i guess?

Their melee defense is just too low, which gets them wiped out in auto resolve constantly.
TBH as far as campaign goes, Swordmasters of Hoeth aren't very good either (don't get me wrong, they're my favorite unit after dragon princes and good in some situations, and leagues better than white lions who are kinda trash), a lot of the time though it's better to get spearmen and sisters of avelorn, the only case Swordmasters are better is vs Dwarfs who have magic resist and shields and against chaos who have shielded infantry.
@@llamaalpaca5563 They have no place in the game, so what balancing reasons there are Im unaware of.
Problem is Swordmasters are outclassed by other top tier units. In the late game, all you really need is Phoenix Guard, Sisters of Avelorn and Dragons. The rest is just optional.
But my sense is the game doesn't favour high damage, low defence melee units in general. Especially using auto resolve.

How are Lothern Sea Guards worse Spearmen than regular Spear-men? I've never had regular Spear-men out perform Sea Guards in melee.
with the money spent recruiting sea guards he could have recruited 3-4 more units of archers+spearmen.
@@deni140492deni He has the money though. I've always found the sea guard frontline - archer backline to be very potent. Whereas I find the spearmen frontline never really has the staying power to let the archers do the job.
@@Aethgeir spearmen have 50 md with martial prowess and that is a lot for a low tier unit
Aethgeir normal spear men are far more value for money and legend had to keep as much money as he could

Sea guard aren't as bad as you think. For the cost you get spearmen who have 30 less models, better stats per model, and bows with plenty of ammunition. They're great in siege's, especially offensive siege's since they can help your archers clear off the walls faster. It's a shame Tyrion doesn't reduce their cost, but high elves make so much money anyway, it's fairly easy to have a core of seaguard in your main army pretty quickly.

lothern sea guard? best elven unit without mods IMHO. well those and the eagle claws for mass unit damage
Can't say I agree. Especially for Tyrion I can't think of any reason at all to use them. They don't shoot really any better than Archers and they don't hold the line any better than Spearmen. Given Tyrion's 50% cost decrease I can see zero argument for running them on his army beyond simple laziness (and if you just want to face roll over the AI and not bother trying/not caring about cost effectiveness plenty of units do that just as well or easier than Sea Guard). Alarielle also has no use for them as she wants mass Sisters. That leaves (maybe) Alith Anar and Teclis as the only two who might ever even look at them and again, they aren't much more effective than simply going archer/spear for economy or any other high tier unit for face roll potential.
@@Murkglow well i like to use mass hybrid units to soften the enemy up, and i play mostly with radious mod and in that mod they are really nice i think
As a vanilla and SFO player Lothern Sea Guard are incredibly good. They don't shoot or hold the line better than their specialised cointerparts granted. But they do both at once. I can see the argument for spearmen over SG because there are more Spearmen. But often the shooting will make up for that.
And usually the cost reduction on Tyrion is only useful early game.
@@MrSpartanspud Cost reduction is *always* useful. If you've got excess money you can just buy another army late game (and two armies are always better than one, even one with "better" units in it). There is never a reason not to save money.
They are good for the flanks in case the enemy cav get through, generally better to get more dedicated frontline and archers otherwise more cost effective and stronger in role

No love for Lothern Seaguard? They are one of my favourite units :/
Lothern sea guard cost a large amount and are slightly worse in melee than basic tier 1 spearmen (while costing more). Obviously sisters of avelorn would be even better. The trouble with the seaguard is that they're a higher tier unit that is similar to an t1 cheaper archer or spearman. They're flexible but if you just built a balanced army it'd be cheaper and more effective. Still can be fun to use i agree, but if you're playing on legendary difficulty (which he is) you need to be efficient, and lothern sea guard really aren't.

You'd be a decent challenge in a head to head campaign.
Yeah I understand. Possibly the strongest faction in the game, but early game is a disaster. Maintaining public order and their units are a issue in early game. They become the strongest when Tyrion gets sunfang(+3 factionwide public order), confederated with Alith Anar(+5 factionwide public order) and when you starts to recruit swordmasters.
Can you please continue this? This looks like a good come back story.

Lothern sea guard bad? wtf are you on about. Slab Tyrion in an army with Lothern Seaguards and like 5 eagleclaw catapults, run him in to the enemy army and just focus fire on the AI as they charge towards Tyrion. its a spectacle to behold and the army isnt even that insanely expensive. While both archers and spearmen are better at their job than seaguards, you still need 1 archer, and 1 spearman, to do the job that 1 Lothern Sea guard does.

Why not at least replace half the sea guard with archers for lower cost and more firepower?
Disaster Campaigns where it takes more then one battle to fix are more enjoyable.

Play a clan engrund campaing
This could actually be a fucking epic fan made story line where Ultuan falls and is under the yoke of their mortal enemies, then Tyrion and a desperate band of warriors finds a new home in the Old World and gradually rebuilds the strength to retake their homeland.
Dude, make from this your lifestream campaign, if who send the save is ok with this idea. Becouse is a very good challenge, later gameplay with all good later units. Tyrion retaking Ulthuan after big fall. Very cool and challenging!

Huhh...usually i dont like these save disaster campaign because I fear that some people just screw up their campaign on purpose...But for some unknown reason....I kinda would like to see how this one plays out :D
@maciejl20 Yeah, it does look like this was screwed up on purpose, Legendary difficulty and the buildings in Tor Koruali looked unchanged from what the AI would build, no Landmark either. Nonetheless, this looks like it would be a really fun campaign to watch him recover.
it does not matter if they are on purpose or not, the fun is in the challenge.

Fun scenario, I like it. What I'd suggest is you could let Morathi get the last settlement and then send it to Legend. But other than that, looks fun.
