  • There are many benefits to making a small diorama. In this video I explain them, and I talk about the goals I have for my own diorama.

Great idea, looking forward to seeing the updates on this project! And I love the micro-layout concept, definitely something worth doing when space is a limited..

Thats what it is. And at the same time it will help with the upcoming big layout. So I know what to buy in bulk. And dioramas are quicker to build, so for some folks it might give more satisfaction.

Looking forward to seeing how you build your roads. Thanks for sharing. Dave

Welcome. The roads with embedded turnouts are the firestarter for this project!

I do not know exactly where they are, but I have some info on street trackage-girder rail, turnouts (switches and frogs), switch throws for in pavement including between the points. When I find this stuff, I'll let you know. There was a time when street trackage parts could be had from the major manufacturers. Switches were available as 2 points or single points for in-pavement use. One or two companies may still supply them. Girder-rail makes street trackage easier to build because the flangeways are in the rail itself.

Keep me updated if you find that! I know there have been a few track products before. I have a fill in set from walthers, but those are not very flexible in their use.
I have an idea that might work regardless of track configuration, and it is without plaster.

@@DubaiTrains Sooooo... I've gotten close to a plan for Section A of a layout that fits and gives me a yard, around-the-room running, and an island for significant tight urban/industrial on-street switching - a la your diorama test. The island also has the requisite runarounds & even a loop turnaround for switchers & small & medium mainline locos (18-20"R). Wonderful, right?
Well it would be if I can get a switcher to slowly pull 3-6 cars around 12" radii to the sidings So can my BLI Paragon 4 PRR EMD NW2 (I bought BEFORE I realized this radius situation) step up?
      Tonight I tested it.
Yes. Yes it can. Smooth, strong, no binding. 🎇🎉🎷👑🎆🥂🌠🌄☀️🤸👍👏💥🤩🥳🥹🤗🌝❕

You definitely want to test that! I had 1 piece or 15" sectional track amd a lot of engines did not like that. Even the 2-6-0 popped out of it, and my alco rs4 barely made it through.

@@DubaiTrains Yes, you're right. There's no way a typical steam loco with more than 2 driver axles would make it. A 3 driver-axle unit would certainly need the center axle driver flanges removed like what was common on old Lionel's. An 0-4-0 would likely work, but add any steering/support wheels and it would depend on the model design.
As it was, it was a minor miracle the diesel unit I tested worked well. It has two double-axle trucks and plenty of clear rotation. Plus it's reasonably short, so it doesn't swing out unnaturally.
The test track was about 135 degrees, but nothing on the plan is much more than 45. Looking at many old urban/industrial photos, this kind of situation isn't uncommon.
Hope springs eternal! And right now any win is a good thing. Needless to say, I'll be watching you street track progress with particular interest. 👌
