Even the non-horror scenes are 10/10. A dark miracle of a film.
Burstyn as a distraught mom and Miller as a troubled priest struggling with his faith, both nailed this masterpiece. Also hats off to Mercedes McCambridge as Pazazu 's voice.
These kind of scenes are crucial in setting up a counter balance of mundane normalcy to the rest of the movie's darkness. Friedkin was at the top of his game. It's a shame Linda and Ellen got hurt on set. But the movie turned out to be a masterpiece.
The necessity of these "mundanely normal" scenes to the movie's effectiveness is a great observation. Another example is the scene where Lt. Kinderman pays a visit to Chris McNeil. The effect is to calm us down with a very humane scene and then right after Lt. Kinderman leaves the house we're confronted with perhaps the most horrific scene in the movie.
Amazing how this excellent piece of cinema is 50 years old this year, like Luci Christian, whom i love to say her appearance is similar to Ellen Burstyn. (She was also born in 1973.)
This film’s also a big inspiration for me cause i named one of my characters after Regan.
You folks should see the bio on the making of the Exorcist. They talk about what happened during filming. It is great.

Not just a horror film (although it IS horrific), it's a tense, dark thriller long before the horror stuff gets going. Ellen Burstyn is phenomenal. A great piece of cinema in any genre.
Probably the most terrifying film that I have ever seen, especially at the cinema.

The " Exorcist" is the greatest Horror movie ever made. "Night of the Living Dead" is another one. According to me. Because they're realistic.
In my opinion, The Exorcist is one of the best movies ever made, regardless of genre.
The Exorcist (1973) directed by William Friedkin and The Thing (1982) directed by John Carpenter both of them are my all time favorite horror movies and it's because both of them have scared me and disturbed me a lot of more than any other horror movie and i put both of them on my top list as the greatest horror movies ever created as well:).

In my opinion, the new exorcist was a little bit better than the first exorcist because this one for me was to disgusting. I know back then they didn’t have the cgi effects that they use now for newer scary movies, but still pretty horrible.

@@christophercoleman5777 I don’t collect physical disc anymore not that I have anything against it just don’t want to have a huge collection anymore but I got the digital version thinking it had both versions 🙃 but my friend wants to watch the rerelease in theaters which turns out to be the extended version which comes out Oct 1st so was debating but might as well go theatrical first
Theatrical cut is more solid in my view. But the extended version has interesting things.
The theatrical cut is the superior version. But the extended version is also worth watching
