Thrashing the two priests of the first movie with the "patriarchy" line is unforgivable. They sacrificed their lives to save Regan. Exorcist Believer and its sequels can rot in hell.

Does it really warrant that much outrage? It's a stupid line, written by clueless writers. But the priesthood has historically been a patriarchy by definition. That's just a fact. Women traditionally can't be priests and that still holds true in a lot of religion. It's different from 'The Patriarchy' of society which isn't what she necessarily was referring to. She says 'their Patriarchy' not 'the Patriarchy'. Patriarcy in all senses does hurt men too tho. After all, men are the only ones who could do the exorcism. Women wouldn't be allowed to make that sacrifice in Catholicism. Only men. I love the original Exorcist, but I'm not gonna let a stupid requel offend me.

    • @kpsk8031
      @kpsk8031 Před 7 měsíci +25

@@KarlHavoc56 It does warrant the outrage. In the original movie, Chris was desperate, completely devastated because there was no one who could help her daughter. These two men were her final hope and they gave their lives. The patriarchy line is complete bs because it is 100% out of character and moronic: Surgeons don't allow bystanders during a surgery. Same goes for an exorcism. Has nothing to do with ideological bs.

The unintended irony behind blaming the 'Patriarchy' is how the moment she faces the demon without the priest, she gets attacked and blinded . So in a way it tells the viewer that ' The Patriarchy ' was right after all . What a stupid script.😅

A condition of Ellen Burstyn's appearance in the film is that Universal and Blumhouse had to finance an acting scholarship in perpetuity for 72 hours of work. Yes, Brian even with her limited time her appearance could have been used to better effect. Plus, Linda Blair's appearance seems very tacked on. There is no dramatic depth because yes it isn't earned! Gordon Green does Burstyn and her character a great disservice by having her a frail old woman go alone into the room alone with the demon. Chris Macneil could have been portrayed in a better way. She had no hands on experience with Exorcisms so how could she have been any help other than emotional support for the families. Makes no sense! 😢

Ellen Burstyn's inclusion in this movie was unnecessary and her actions/dialogue were just straight up awful. The exorcism scene was also pretty lame, besides the demon giving the parents an ultimatum of choosing between the two girls. But the biggest sin of this movie was the near complete absence of anything shocking or blasphemous on screen. Moments in the original Exorcist are so iconic and still shock to this day. Did the filmmakers or studio not want to offend people??? THAT'S THE FUCKING POINT! Absolutely ridiculous!

    The patriarchy:
In the novel the movie is based on, Chris prepares to go in with them during the Exorcism. Father Karras talks her out of it. I seem to recall they didn't want her in there because if Regan died, those moments would be Chris's last memories of her daughter, and she shouldn't be burden with that.
Also, at one point BOTH her female assistant Sharon and Chris herself enter the room. Because the Exorcism was a "force of suggestion," they were advised to continue her regular treatment. Chris goes in to give Regan an injection, but the demon taunted Chris and she left before giving Regan the injection she needed.

I was suspicious the second they announced they were making a direct sequel, then worried when like Halloween, it would be a trilogy. Why why why? The only decent sequel is not even really a sequel - it is Legion and the studio insisted on a big exorcism scene at the end, together with threadbare connections to the original. I am not surprised at how bad this is being reviewed, not for a bit. I agree here that Chris MacNeill should not have been interested in helping, initially anyway and to appear near the end. In her scene with Karras in the original she says she knows her daughter and she knows that 'that thing upstairs is not her. Very powerful and emotive... perhaps the father of the girl could have said something similar that would get to Chris. The studios have too much say in matters - cos it's all business and box office. As a result, story goes out the window and what you have is another generic possession movie. Why bother calling it a sequel at all - it might have been better received. Not a movie but the series The Exorcist introduced Chris and Regan in a much better way. I was surprised and bought into the idea much more.

I am what you call an obsessed individual about the 1973 movie, the exorcist. I saw the Believe version and again was totally disappointed. I hundred percent agree with your opinion of this letdown movie. You're right about the first 40 minutes, were really interesting, and then the downward motion began. They really went fast, like this movie was in their way of something david would have wanted to do instead of this movie. There was no alone time with the parents or even the church family, their pastor, and the little girl. There was no contest between the demon, (well it did not really look like a demon, I have no idea what that was, I didn't understand the entire meaning of the scene) and their parents, pastor and what have you. The exorcising of the whatever was going on didn't make sense either. What happened in Haiti, the part where they were speaking over the mother, seemed like voodoo, then during the last scene they bring in the same person to use voodoo on the 2 girls, which really did not make any sense whatsoever. Then Chris, became a self-taught exorcist, I think? and told one of the little girls, "in the name of??" just pissed off the thing, and it decided, aww, to hell with your eyes! Why?? I asked?? The director did nothing good with the Halloween trilogy, except make me wait years for the continuation of nothing but pure crap. Oh by the way, the second exorcist already has a title, it's called the exorcist deceive, it will be out in 2025, in which, I will not waste money or time going to the movies and enduring their high-priced drink, popcorn, and long as lines, when I can watch it at home, so that's my plan. Not worth going to the movies for pure crap.

The Exorcist as originally concieved was a novel/movie heavily steeped in cathlolic conceptions on the nature of evil and it's hardly surprising that Hollywood as it exists today is unable to carry the story forward without completely destroying the franchise. I hope the studio loses an arm and a leg in releasing this abomination. The film might have worked as just another servicable possession film had it tried to tread its own path rather than ride the coat tails of what was an amazing piece of cinematic history. The sequels will be intersting to say the least.

I appreciated the efforts in the first half of the movie to replicate some of William Friedkin's stylistic choices in "The Exorcist." As long as the movie remained sort of quiet, I thought it was OK.
But as it descended into splatter, action and "shock," it really lost me. The filmmakers pretended they had the confidence to make a more subtle movie until they dived headlong into silliness.
Honestly, the thing that annoyed me the most, by far, is the movie's complete misunderstanding of religion and the importance of one specific religion's notions (the Catholic Church; I'm not a member, indeed, I'm an atheist) to the original's success.
The incredibly stupid, warm-n-fuzzy, pluralistic "exorcism," complete with a blatant dismissal of Catholicism (again, not a Catholic!), demonstrated how out of touch the filmmakers are. There is, to put is imply, zero chance that clergy from conservative Protestant, Catholic, charismatic/fundamentalist and "root religion" would so blithely agree to a circle-jerk group exorcism. Just astounding that they tried to foist that off on audiences.

Biggest problem with this film is definitely the director David Gordon Green who I think did very little with the Halloween franchise except make it more violent. He has no deftness, no strong visual sense and no idea how to keep a movie interesting. A few rewrites and a much better director would have worked. Such a disappointment to see the brilliant Burstyn treated so shabbily.

So it's not anywhere near as good as the original from 1973. What a shock not. Saw the original in the movie theater in 1973 when I was 13 y.o. and it scared me silly. William Friedkin won an Oscar for the French Connection and he directed The Exorcist a few years later. Obviously a great director makes a big difference.

David Gordon Green’s major weakness is character development when it comes to iconic legacy characters. And he never fully understands the movie that he’s making. Lazy writing and lazy directing. Halloween Kills was awful and now he’s managed to screw up another iconic franchise.

He is spot on in this review. I think that they should have used Chris during the exorcism and not in a hospital bed! She was too smart to wander into that room alone. It was chaotic from then on. They really could have benefited from less people during the exorcism. Also the story of how the possession really matters. Like how did these girls summon a demon with a pendulum and was that abandoned ruin in the middle of the woods meaningful??! It could of been so much better 😭

I might be the only one who actually hated "HALLOWEEN 2018."
It's hockey, they focused on his mask soooo much it was clearly fan fiction. They treat it like the mask in the movie "THE MASK." the scary scenes were laughable and the funny moments fell flat. No offense to the films many fans BTW.
    I skipped "KILLS" and "ENDS"
HALLOWEEN is one of my favorite horror films. "THE EXORCIST" is one of my all-time favorite films. After seeing the trailers, I was convinced, "this is gonna be trash!"

Was very excited when I first heard about this sequel. Decided to check out some Google reviews. The one star review posted was actually some idiot reviewing the original classic and giving it one star! It really sounds as if the director completely missed the mark with what would motivate the Chris McNeil character. She would never make any sort of negative remark towards the priests. I remember her being very thankful and almost indebted to the church and their priests for saving her daughter and for their sacrifice. It doesn't even seem that this director understood the character, what motivated her and what type of woman she was and became after her daughter's exorcism. Also, doesn't make any sense that Chris and Regan would be estranged over Chris writing a book. From this review it sounds as if the director took a great opportunity and pissed it away. I'll probably not make any great effort to watch this movie now, but if it comes out on one of my subscribed streaming services I may view it then. Such a shame and disappointment.

First of all this new movie should have absolutely nothing to do with the old one. There was no need for it also for someone to believe that Chris McNeil had not spoken to her daughter Reagan for many years just because Chris wrote a book about their ordeal, if everything that they went through in the movie the original exorcist did not destroy their relationship. How the hell is her writing a book going to do that this movie was just very forced did not like it, and the quick ending were Linda Blair shows up to hold her mother‘s hands it just felt like they called Linda up on the phone and said hey, do you want to fill in for a few minutes, I enjoyed seeing her because I like Linda Blair, but it was just not working for me. This movie was terrible.

How can you be remain stoic when your beloved daughter going through worst experience of her life. His eyes didn’t coveyed pain. This was one of the worst acting I had seen in a Hollywood mainstream film in a while.

The reason they have two girls is because Hollywood is too afraid to have just a white character anymore so they make sure they are being “inclusive” in every way. It’s in every movie and every show. There are usually a multitude of different ethnicities in such a way that it’s forced and there’s almost always a trans person as well. The inclusion is forced and unnatural. It’s ok if there is a group a friends that are white it’s not racist. This is such a strange thing and has only become really big and forced in the past decade because of politics, the media, and woke Hollywood. Movies are no where near as good as they used to be because of this crap. It’s annoying and now it’s predictable at this point. No one wants to be able to predict a movie. That takes the fun of watching it out of it. We have to boycott Hollywood and the media until they start to produce good work and choose actors because of talent and not because they check a box.
