Zomato’s pure veg fleet: Discrimination or a non-issue? | Faye D'Souza

  • Zomato set off a vociferous online debate after it announced the launch of a “pure veg” fleet. The first draft of the policy included special green uniforms and delivery only from pure veg restaurants. After backlash, the onground markers of separation were removed, and Zomato said the fleet will continue but all riders will don the signature red uniforms. @meghnerd , Aditi Mittal, Shruti Ganapatye and Aditya Pratap join Faye to discuss.

A golden retriever is bred as a companion animal, not for food. If we take your hypothetical it would also imply that the dog was likely a pet taken from a family. This is fundamentally a false equivalence because regular non veg food that's available in India, is very common- as a vegetarian, you'd only be disgusted to the degree of your dog example, if you never went outside lmao. This also exposes the discriminatory idea that meat is supposed to be disgusting and only veg is "pure" so the utensils used to cook meat are also "impure".

This is a great discussion and it shows how people think and talk about these issues in public. Varna Jati based descrimination is so deeply ingrained within our societies that you will have people proudly proclaiming that they practice untouchability, and others who dont even realize they are. And since SARI's report has shown that 1 in 4 indians practice untouchability (that number goes up to 50% among brahmin populations), this is a very important issue that the ones who dont want to talk about it just dont want to accept this reality. Such is the nature of living segregated lives that keep you from emphathizing with your fellow Indians

It has already happened before without any colour coding. If the delivery agent got attacked while wearing the colour code they insisted, then the company will end up with larger liability.

The main problem I see here is that there are too many people obsessed with how others live their lives. Here’s my personal opinion: I will go out of my way to accommodate your dietary preference as long as you don’t think that your choices are somehow superior to mine or that you are better or more pure that me. Of course this “pure” nonsense is a built on caste. Anyone who things otherwise is in denial. And I know this well because I’m a beef eating Brahmin (supposedly… I renounced this nonsense decades ago) but I get so much judgement from other Indians.

  • @debujena9692
    @debujena9692 Před 2 měsíci +3

While I am late to the party. I would like to make a point. Let's look at a scenario.
Raju is a vegetarian and orders food from Zomato. Now his order of veg food can get contaminated at 3 points in the delivery process. (Note: there can be more than 3 points)
    1. Food contaminated in the kitchen because non-veg food was being cooked in the kitchen
    2. Wrong packing by the restaurant. Non-veg item packed with a veg item.
    3. Food leakage and damage during delivery by Zomato.
Now green fleet (Only veg delivery system) solves only 1 point out of 3, food leakage. Because delivery persons cannot verify the food cooking or packing process.
Now the question is how many cases have Zomato in a month (average) registered where food was mixed or contaminated during delivery. Is it 1 case of 1000 cases? Zomato should release the data.
If it is 1: then Zomato is not solving any issue because there is no issue.
If it is 1000: then Zomato needs to look at its entire delivery process to prevent food contamination.
As of right now, it seems that the entire exercise by Zomato is just a plain marketing campaign to generate discussion, controversy and debate around Zomato. (There is nothing called bad publicity)
So why did business Sirs at Zomato do this?
Because it was sexy to do so.
Business Sirs, MBA graduates, and UI/UX designers should start solving some real issues instead of blatant marketing campaigns and not play with the sentiments of good people.

It’s a term used by the food suppliers to assure their customers/ guests that the food being served doesn’t have ingredients offensive to them- pure is an adjective for food , but not the consumer- the whole debate is about caste system? Then why not just have a separate debate about it ? If journalists are allowed to have it their way , and sensationalize every divisive idea , to improve their TRPs, then the country could get Balkanized - let the woke crowds leave social reform as they see it , proceed at it’s own pace - don’t impose/ intimidate people who don’t agree with you

You can still order whatever you want. The non veg food isn’t going to jump from its packaging and across plastic bag to your food which itself will be wrapped in plastic and containers. If 2 restaurants and 2 homes are on the same line, it’s not causing you any harm. The only problem you’re causing is environmental problems by making the delivery person wait out for another veg/non-veg order and time.

I dont agree with zomato’s strategy and i agree with the fact that it would lead to discrimination. Non veg food is not impure, in many cultures its offered to gods as prasad, so it would be ignorant to say its impure. Its not. But as a vegetarian by choice, i do have the right to have a preference to not have a piece of flesh/ meat interact with my food, not because its in any way lesser! But because i chose to not eat animals! So why should i consume anything that has interacted remotely even with meat? That said, i still will not throw a tantrum and eat at places that serve all kinds of food using the same utensil, because its not easy to find pure vegetarian places in all cities. Coming to the dairy debate, abuse of cattle is an end product of greed and commercialism not vegetarianism! Shouldn’t there be laws and follow through on ensuring more ethical treatments of animals rather than expecting vegetarians to give up dairy? How is it different from asking non vegetarians to give up meat? Also do we as a country have options for vegans? In tier 2 cities? It is possible to source daisy products from more ethically operational farms too

That's highly unprofessional behaviour, especially for someone who takes her job so seriously she feels the need to make statements like "as a journalist i feel the need to clarify Mrs litchuke is aditi mittal" like that wasn't obvious - but isn't being unbiased one of the central tenets of journalism too, ma'am?
While I do agree some of the panelists, esp Aditya, were unpleasant to deal with, a debate is only enjoyable when both parties express their opinion, the moderator plays devil's advocate for both, and we have better conversations throughout. While the whole conversation was fascinating, no one, including Faye, seems to have observed or paid attention to the very uniquely Indian phrase 'non-vegetarian'. No one, and I mean no one else in the world uses this phrase to describe meat-based food except Indians. The phrase, in all its 'impurity', assumes that vegetarian food is the norm and meat-based food is outside of this 'norm'. It sort of plays into the whole 'pure' and 'impure' conversation, that vegetarian dietary practices are the culture and everything else is an exception to that culture, hence 'non' vegetarian. Everyone knows that meat-eating is not the exception, vegetarianism is, and still uses this phrase. I think we should expunge this phrase from our cultural vocabulary. Also, strangely, this phrase with this connotation exists in English only and not in Indian languages (at least not that ones I've heard), where it's 'maamsahara' or 'shakahara' which simply mean 'meat-based' and 'plant-based' respectively. Tamil is probably an exception where vegetarian is called 'Saivam', but I'm not sure if meat-based food is called 'Asaivam'.
