  • This is a four part (Scratch-Build) series on the HO Scale model railroad - 'River Road. They will cover the inspiration, concept , design, scratch-building, and painting, of the Slum Landlord Building Facades. These building flats reside directly behind the Cinder Block building on section two at Duncan Way Overpass. They are the final set of structures which will eventually lead to the IPEX Plastics industry and beyond.

    Your videos are good. Been watching for 3-4 years. You were still working on Glover Road… where length gets to be a headache is when the content is lacking. I have watched guys stretch 20 minutes of content into an hour video with adds self promotion, CZcams adds, etc. the second place videos seem to get in trouble is when they cram to much in. If you have a 1-2 hour how to video on a project. You might cram in 42 vital steps… one who is going to remember all of those. Two going back to find a step you forgot how to do is a nightmare. Our time is valueble. Don’t waist or abuse it. Thank you for always seeming to keep such factors in mind.

      Thank you. It is always a challenge when it comes to video production concerning "model - building" and paint, etc. I actually cut out half the content for every series which are usually a few hours spread-out out over several episodes - It's approx. 30 hours to edit one half hour video. This amounts to 120 hours for a four part series! Not to mention managing the channel and actually building the models, etc.
      If I cut out (edit) stuff, people say, " why didn't you show it?" If I add it all in they skip everything and then ask me, "why this-and-that-and-not-the-other?" - The situation becomes impossible.
      Having said this, I just produce the video as I would like to see it if I wanted to learn the methods myself, and understand why I do it. Furthermore, since the layout build is almost impossible to film chronologically, most of the content is relative and collective over the whole production run. Cheers ~ Boomer.😁

    The great thing about videos on CZcams is I we can skip around, rewind, pause ... we have control. And frankly your videos have, generally, fantastic content. For me, all that said, make your videos longer if you have more to share. Post new content more often. If YOU build it they will come. Thank you for sharing what you do.

    After 55 years of model railroading the one thing I have truly learned, there are so many ways to achieve the same means. I know some that can take a week to weather 1 freight car when I can get the same effects in ten minutes. I think I’ll start making some videos.

  • @leisureshoot

    My tolerance for long videos is low, because so many people make videos that include 15 minutes worth of info and entertainment over a 45 minute video. Yours could likely go an hour and a half long and I wouldn't even notice. Your modeling is entertaining, relaxing (you're like the Bob Ross of model railroading), informative, inspiring, thought provoking.

    Choosing to overlap two real places and real track plans, which are far apart in “real life”, is a great demonstration of why “prototype vs. freelance” is the wrong question! From a systems engineer’s perspective, a “prototype” is made BEFORE the real operational thing. As modelers, we create a “stereotype” (widely held, but oversimplified image) of the “archetype” (an original that has been imitated). We MODEL, and choose what attributes to emphasize or simplify of some natural or artificial, existing or imagined original. Some modelers are also master artists, who employ line, perspective, color, detail, and composition to enhance their models. Well done Boomer. 😎

    It's a great build, and you are a master craftsman. One thing I have found is that Evergreen plastic is softer than some of the cheaper alternatives for plain sheet. Using your method for chiseling out openings in 60 thou, could result in a chisel blade snapping and flying off with the harder material, so its important people are mindful of how much force they are applying to the blade.

    As far as video length goes, I can't handle live streams that last an hour or two.
    There was a study done quite a few years ago that came up with an average attention span of 10-15 minutes, maybe because of TV ad breaks?
    For in-depth stuff like you are providing I feel 30 minutes is fine, we can always stop part-way through and take a break if it's too much.
    Videos, where there's more padding than content, will turn me off really quick, and "watch to the end for the simple secret" don't ever get clicked.
    Yours on the other hand are full of great information.

    Hi Boomer, about the prototype photos, especially buildings. My suggestion is to make a big ruler of a known size, and paint it in a few alternating sections of red and white. As a European I would say 1 meter, in 4 sections.
    Set the ruler stick against the building or whatever your taking pictures of.
    Back home you can then easilly estimate sizes, based on the known size of the ruler on the photos.
    Everything else, your doing fantastic. Thanks for the inspiration and all your effort!

    Boomer, I really enjoy your introduction to each video when you slowly pan the whole River Road scene working your way into the focus of the video. This, of course includes Dusty, and her thoughts!
    As for the length of each video, I much prefer the longer video over the short.
    With short videos, say 30 minutes, seem like 10 minutes. There is a lot of content to absorb from video to video.
    So personally, I would say longer videos are my preference.

    Boomer~ I might as well add my two cents' worth. I don't mind the video lengths. If I don't have time to watch it all in one sitting, I'll pause it and come back later, sometimes backing up a minute or two just to remember where you are. But you're also very good at breaking each video into separate chapters, like "Chopping Freehand Tiles," so I can stop there if I want and pick it up when I've got more time. Don't care if you go long in your videos, you explain what you're doing and why , and what your trying to achieve, I'd watch you cut those shingles for a hour, you're very informative, I've been in this hobby all my life, I'm 53 , it's like you said, you get better, you learn more and more as you do, am i a talented artist? No, but the more you do, the more you learn, it's the greatest hobby to be a part of, there's things i won't do, or haven't done, tried laying my own turnouts, when i was younger, not good, but got a little better, still not the greatest, so i would use prefab switches, as long as you planned them out, they would work fine, but your also giving in to the limits of how you can use them, so, stay with me, I'm getting there, what I'm trying to say is you inspire your audience to try and do, ya screw up, so what? Try some more, so, this winter, I'm from the u.p. of Michigan, we get winter, I'm going to try again at making my own turnouts. Will i screw up? Don't know, but watching you build a boat, or a scene or a building, it's getting the juices going again, i understand you did this for a living, your very good and have more talent in your pinky than most of us, you could have started your channel and been like look what i made, and i made it better than you, which you do, but you're helping a lot of us by just showing and encouraging people to try, so long story short 😂 doesn't matter how long your videos are, there very informative and interesting, keep em coming. I very much enjoy watching you work and design what you make. I have been watching now for about a year, and the length of video is good at a half-hour. Other people I watch do about the same, though some have gone as long as 40+ minutes in some. Breaking down how you are making something is great, it gives us bit size chunks of information to digest and possibly try between videos. I also very much like hearing you talk about this hobby and why you do certain things the way you do them. Like compressing distance. I once thought about modeling the Durango to Silverton rail line, but couldn't think how to compress 27 miles (43.45 KM) in any space I own. Keep up the good work.

    Your videos and commentary are quite enjoyable to watch. I just discovered your channel about a month ago. Learning a lot from your techniques which I’m building into my own small 20” x 11’ shelf switching layout. Just wanted to say thanks for creating great content and sharing your ideas and experiences.

    I feel unworthy to suggest something to a master, but I would have everything if you added porches to the middle section of the "slumb" :) landlord building with W.C. Fields sleeping on a porch swing.

    Boomer, just another top notch video. I have to say that you should not be so conscious of the time limits of your videos. You offer so much information on what you are doing, only an idiot would say something like they are too long, some bed-wetter.....Sure there are some modelers who are pretty good and have advanced over the years but nothing like your stuff. I say cover the topic as you see neccessary and "F" off to the folks that whine about time. I don't have the skills like you do but seeing how it is done will get me to the level I want to be and that's just fine......Cheers my friend.... 🥂🥂

      I hope it inspires and compels us all to practice the art more. More practice leads to a greater skill set for all of us. I still practice, fail and take risks because I think the ceiling is so high it is unattainable, which puts us all in this great hobby on equal ground. Cheers.😉

    Maybe a silly question: I have had problems with the white gasket coming off the cap and sitting on top of the Plastruct bottle while working the cap/brush. Have you experienced this? Is there a good way to prevent this from happening or is it a case of, "stop whining and deal with it"? Thank you for sharing your journey and knowledge with us!

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I get that once in awhile. I just shove it back in with a tool until the glue builds up on the plastic shaft a little and it sticks. Sometimes I live with it until it goes away.

    Boomer checked you out on the pod cast, that was very informative thoughts you had. On this build, I know you have shown how you cut out doors and windows( had a nipper but with N scale the width of a nipper bit is the same size of a door) which is ok but for widows I have switched to your method. I really liked part 1 did your original plan include the extra building on the left?? It makes the scene flow. As always thanks!!

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  Před 10 měsíci

      No. The original plan did not include the "parapet" structure. It just seemed to make sense as the structure evolved some.

    Boomer, I personally find the 20-30 minute range to be the most enjoyable. I know that you have to balance building, recording, editing, production and uploading of the content. Find the balance that works best for you.
    Given the light grey color of the siding I'm wondering if it's not the old asbestos siding that was used a lot in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

    Hey Boomer. With regards to video length….I don’t see a problem with them being as long as they need to be. Who cares? If someone doesn’t have time to watch the whole thing in a single sitting, there’s no reason they can’t stop it and come back later. It’s not as if you have to get a baby sitter so you can go out to the theatre! That’s the beauty of CZcams. It’s always available to watch. Personally, I have watched the Tree Tutorial Playlist at least 5 times so far…..

  • @FHollis-gw4cc
    @FHollis-gw4cc Před 9 měsíci +1

    My 2 cents: tolerance for length depends almost entirely on the content and how it's presented. You seem to have found the perfect recipe. You don't repeat yourself, yet you cover the subject without rushing. Good on ya!
    About the #11 blade and safety, oh the story I could tell you!
    Finally! I have a complaint! I've been waiting and waiting to find something I could whine about. In the opening few minutes of this video, you show the switcher moving so prototypically yet there is that jarring moment when one realizes there is no one in the cab! Put an engineer in there will ya?

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  Před 9 měsíci

      Thank you. The next locomotive I am presently working on gets an engineer ;-) Here is a story, if you missed it, where I injured myself with the # 11 blade: czcams.com/video/F8WGfoPMmRo/video.html

    • @boomerdiorama

      I build mine from photos with standards in mind. You can try a "Google" search for pole standards. Try "Commercial Utility Pole Standards." Check Google images as well.

    • @boomerdiorama

      They are called "God Hand" from Japan. Most hobby shops should carry them if they have current inventory.

  • @rwissbaum9849
    @rwissbaum9849 Před 9 měsíci +1

    Boomer, I've never seen a hand drill like the one you have shown here. It looks like the bits are held in place by a set screw? Where did you get that drill, and is it part of a set?

      Use a scale model ruler (from hobby shop). In the case of 1/48, one quarter of an inch is one foot.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  Před 9 měsíci

      Eventually . . . but people (figurines) on the layout are not a priority right now because I only like to use them when the story (vignette) is established. Then I can use people to flesh out the details of the story. I typically never rush things. The story is way to deep and I have only scratched the surface. ;-)
