  • This is (part2) of the Slum Landlord scene. The Stair Case Build @ 21:36. The Slum Landlord (Paint tutorials) are in two parts to follow this one (The whole series is four parts in total). This scene completes the middle of section two bookended by the overpass. There is much more railroad to build into the remainder of section two and three before it is finished.

    Boomer~ I’ve been a subscriber to your channel for over three years now. The many modeling techniques you describe, the nuggets of wisdom you impart, and just your easygoing manner and humility-these and many other things have helped kick my own modeling skills up a few notches. I thank you for that. I’ve enjoyed everything you’ve done on River Road, and even though it’s not a large modeling space, relatively speaking, it’s more space than I’ve got. But that has to do with my age, lifestyle, and ever shrinking footprint, so to speak, than anything else. That said, I find myself returning to Glover Road from time to time and watching again (many for the third time) all that you did on that wonderful little shelf layout, which better fits my available modeling space. I would encourage all of your subscribers-new and old alike-to hop on the “mixed train” to Glover and spend some time there. It’s a track plan that can be modified to fit any era or locale. Not only that, as talented as you already are, I can see how your own modeling keeps getting better and better, from watching those earlier videos. I attribute that to your overall philosophy: never be afraid to make a mistake. Personally, I never learned much by getting something right the first time. Your videos have become a big part of my everyday life, and I look forward to watching and learning from each of them. Thank you. ~Brian

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  Před 8 měsíci

      Thanks for sharing Brian. Yes indeed! . . . we all continue to grow in our skill-set when we practice on a smaller footprint - this is my modeling philosophy.
      I would be content with half the size of this layout. Twenty six feet feels huge to me, especially when all my operational needs are satisfied by switching a boxcar or two. ;-)
      Cheers ~ Boomer.

Seeing your techniques give me some confidence for future projects. Also, thanks for the kit bash of the abandoned cottage. I've been planning to use the kit on a TTrack module, but only a standard build. A kit bash similar to what you have done will be more appropriate and add another point of interest to the module. Boomer, the Slum Landlord Build is just fantastic! All the different angles really do draw the eye, but, the exposed brick, I must admit, is my favorite.
    There is so much to take in, but the plaster breaking away from the brick is exactly what happens to those old unkempt buildings- pure realism!
    Glad to see the Supervisor keeping an eye on things! Every job needs a Supervisor.
    Also, watched the Second Section Podcast, all 3:08.29 seconds.

Thanks to you I am using your method with angle styrene, and yes it works great in N scale just a smaller size. You showed that method on the brewery build and the tug boat build. What was cool was you made railings out of styrene. Thanks!!! You did make a statement that rings very true. Dear Boomer, very cool to see you do the modern windows, especially the construction of the middle bar. Love the way you’ve put so many angles and different corners on this structure. It definitely adds to the view lines, hence to the (forced) perspective of depth, the illusion of the slumlord world going on beyond the backdrop. Simply beautiful how you did the right hand side with the exposed Tyvek, just awesome. Very good info on the crackle paste, definitely will do some experimentation on different surfaces, different thicknesses and methods of application. As always, love the stairs and their railings.
    Definitely agree on the 5% rule, those last little threads weigh their part.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  Před 8 měsíci +1

      There are no dumb questions . . . ;-) You raise an excellent question.
      Each person has their own method for organizing. I have limited space so I keep groups of certain profiles in bundles with elastic bands, etc. For example: All the "Angle" sizes are in one bundle, the rod is in one bundle, the tubes in another, etc. I also keep the smaller profile "Strip" that I use frequently in a separate bundle as well.
      You will figure out what works best when you plug into a certain build as well. Some particular builds that I stay with to completion, I have all the material on the desk to the side for quick access. I also make sure I have plenty of "Sheets" in the .010" - .015" - .020" - .030" range as well so I can also cut strip, etc. @ different thicknesses.
      Evergreen plastics is an investment so I just buy a few packs here-and-there to ease the pain on the wallet as well whenever I go to the store or order online. Check E-Bay as well. Sometimes you can buy bundles for great deals! Cheers ~ Boomer.

    Flat buildings are OK when see straight in front at good eyes level. But as soon as viewer is just a little bit on the side, illusion is broke off. But here abandoned house and its elevated land height plus the unconventional shape of the building, illusion is still working. May be that side extension was even added later on in building life. It´s not uncommon to add a floor or two, or extend a building on its side specially commercial or industrial one. When business is good and more room needed, you move or extend.
