Carinthia Defence 4 - Long Term Review - The Best Bushcraft Sleeping Bag In The World
The Defence 4 may be Carinthia's best all-around sleeping bag. Designed for cold and nasty weather, it's no surprise that (among others) also the Finnish army adopted this very model! This here is a reliable choice, designed for very demanding use!
Three season bag with comfort rating as low as -15°C / 5°F
Weight about two kilograms / a bit over four pounds
Military-grade materials
The Defence sleeping bag series is designed for military use, the materials and overall properties are all made with that in mind.
Comes with a compression bag, which is compressional both height and lengthwise.

I’m still waiting on the 100% Wool sleeping bag called the “Wooly Bag” it’s gonna be a big hit!
a big itchy hit
Ah Wooley, you've convinced me! Okay... I ordered the Carinrhia Defense 4. $257 delivered to the USA. Not a bad price coming from Finland. My wife is gonna skin me alive but don't worry, I won't throw you under the bus! LOL!
Thanks for your advise brother and God Bless! Frank
Great choice
Thanks for all the information
No problem at all
“Dags, d’ya like dags?” 😂
Great vid sir
I do!! Not into caravans much though! Great movie
I ordered a Defence 1 and they sent me a Defence 4 by mistake... they said I could keep it as it was an international order and too costly to send back..then sent me the Defence 1 as originally ordered. All for 85 pounds in a sale.. So far it just hasn’t been cold enough to try the 4 but I absolutely love the Defence 1 which is the exact same design just with less insulation for a comfort limit of 5 degrees.. It took all of about 5 minutes to become my all time favourite sleeping bag ever, and I’ve owned many including 3 Snugpak’s. The Defence 1 is definitely warmer than my Snugpak Tactical 2 which is rated for comfort at 0. I know this is a Defence 4 review...my point is I love the Carinthia quality design and performance.. These bags are so roomy which I love in a sleeping bag, comfortable and I love the easy open non snag centre zips after years of hassles with Snugpak zips.. (still love those too though) I thought maybe I’d be claustrophobic with the small face hole but actually it’s cosy and does a lot to retain heat. They are an excellent design. I wish I’d discovered Carinthia years ago but better late than never!... Your review helped me decide to get a Carinthia so I want to say thanks for that...reviews like these really help people to decide...
Thanks for a wonderful comment, I have a love hate relationship with snugpak, their zips are terrible! Shocking! But your spot on with carinthia, your light weight bag might tie into your defense 4 to make a 5 season bag
Carinthia def1+def4 is enough for -35c i have tested this in finnish winter.
BRilliant
@@hornantuutti5157 Aissaatana :)
Nice
Nice vid! ...i m ex Dutch infantry and first we had the Carinthia tropen and defence 4 ..combined with Carinthia bivi..but later on the issue us with the clones from Fesca made in Spain..its the same that the British have ..I must say the clone is realy a good bag! Greetings from Holland
excellent to hear, ive just got one to test, seems great
@@RedBranchBushcraft yes and i got the UK tropen type ...like it because it has a spare zipper for just in case..
Thank Wooly I’m going to look in to this one 👍🤝 £40 + on a bid at the moment. £80 Plus postage on another
very good bags , Randy did a bit of research and the Dutch army sleep system is made by carinthia to , might be worth a look
Great review.
I’m after one of these.
They look great.
These are great, the British army one is not far off
@@RedBranchBushcraft Cool.
You ever use a Pattern 58 British Army bag in your bushcrafting/ camping?
If so,how did you get on with it?
Rehards
Is that the down bag with the rubbery back or the Arctic bag? I've used both, not a patch on the new stuff
@@RedBranchBushcraft yes. The old down bags. I have one here. It’s not bad with a fleece liner, but it’s just old tech, I guess.
Still usable. I used it on The Mendip Hills last weekend, as it’s the only bag I could get.
Regards.
Great. I've just caught the fine print in your "patch", Let nature be your teacher. That's too big an ask for a lot of dopes on this planet, mate, but I hope that it catches on through your work with the kids. Keep swinging, we'll land a few that count...
it only takes one
I love the dog ..but you are right, the Defence 4 is great!
Lolo, that's Bruno, he's the star of the show
The bivybag from Carinthia is good..the sleeping bags are not that warm. Had over four of them .I like because they are bombproof
FB Kayak Cobber
I use them as I do long-distance walking projects months in a row. From Arctic up to deserts.
excellent stuff, i am a fan of the sleeping bags
Good info.. I am in the market for a new one myself.
These are the business, I've a video on my complete sleep system coming out soon
I'd buy it, but i wonder about the shape of the hood? You could fit 2 basketballs next to your head. Also i want to have a collar... maybe i could sew it myself afterwards. I have used Carinthia in the army, quite similar to Defence 4. Good memories about it.
It's a great bag, I highly recommend it
Hey Wooley. What do u think of the British Army Jungle Bag? I’m looking for a lightweight bag that isn’t a Mummy Style. Mostly for use indoors. Maybe one day for camping in warmer months. Thanks Dude
It's a good bag, well made but I've never slept in it on its own, only as part of a system, so I've no idea how warm it is
It's a Ridgeline jumper , I can't remember the mmodel
I brought my defence 4 on eBay for 60 pounds what a bargain I thought goes well with my Dutch hooped bivvy bag cosy as anything
Brilliant, mine was 50 off eBay, some bargain
How did you get so cheap? Was it used? I checked ebay and it's around £200 any tips?
Set a reminder on eBay, mine was used but it was new when I got it, took me awhile to get one
@@RedBranchBushcraft I don't know how to create a reminder 😅
On your phone on the app, search what your looking for then click the heart in the top.left
Would a British army modular fit the defence 4? Ie light weight Modular & liner part?
Yes, fits perfectly, thats what I did at the start
@@RedBranchBushcraft wot do you use now? The correct one?
@lonewandererbushcraftwildc6822 mostly I use the defence 4 combo, but I have the British army and USA systems , I have lots of kit
@RedBranchBushcraft so you use the corinthia full set up?
How does that compare to the cheaper British army mss system?
I can buy grade 1 full modular army for £90 but if the corinthia is better I'll save up for that.
It's just very expensive lol
@lonewandererbushcraftwildc6822 no I use a mix, defence 4 and mod light bag , defence 4 is a better bag though
Best sleeping bag 👍 All Carinthia products are awsome but pricy.
you get what you pay for, excellent products
Challenge... we have seen you do silent videos on splitting, and overnights, but can you do a silent review?😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
Challenge accepted
0:00 is that your neighbours dog? 🤣
That's Bruno, he's my dog, have a look at some of my other videos, he's basically the star of the channel, I'm just the cameraman now
@@RedBranchBushcraft wow that was a fast reply 😂👌
Lol, I try to respond to every single comment, I happened to just pick up my phone when yours came in
@@RedBranchBushcraft what a coincidence 😂
Lol
It's good that you are happy with the bag, but Carinthia has not made the bags in years, the British army were fobbed off with FECSA bags made by some mickey mouse outfit in Spain, basically they fall to bits moisture retention is so bad it can not be used in minus temperatures.
I would have a good guess that you are spoofing!
Why would I spoof?
What are you talking about, you can buy these off of the Carinthia official shop
@@jonathanw5317 he means the British army wasnt issued these in years, off course you can still buy them, but army is no longer issueing these.
Cheers buddy
Are you saying this review is “in the bag”?😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
oh jebus!! lol
Well at night on a solo outing... I can honestly say that “your in the bag” 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
you sure they are copies and not the real thing made by the same company?
n/m says the british one is a copy, can't find the dutch one.
The dutch tropical bag is a Carinthia bag so likely the full set is as well...
@@randyyeager that good to know, i got my dutch bag for £10
@@RedBranchBushcraft wow good deal...
