Building A Pillar Drill / Drill Press Table (adjustable fence, extraction hose & inlaid rulers)

  • 00:04 This odd shaped piece of ply was my original attempt to fix the base of the mitre saw. It didn’t work particularly well and you can see me taking if off in this video ( • Fixing Mitre Saw - 90°... ) and replacing it. I now have no need for this piece and began this build by cutting and squaring, using the homemade table saw sledge.
00:37 I take another piece of scrap which happens to be a little thicker then the base and square one edge. Placing the smaller piece upon the larger, with the squared surfaces against the sledge fence I mark the length and cut.
00:57 Now I cut this piece square. This will become the back fence to the table.
01:31 I wanted to attach an extraction hose adaptor for those jobs which create a lot of dust. After working out the angle by eye, I set the bed to the desired angle and used a forstner bit to drill the hole out.
02:21 To expand the working surface I drill a semi circle out, a little larger than the size of the pillar post so the bed can be pushed a little further back on the machine.
02:33 I estimate roughly the travel distance of the fence, marking after I use an engineer’s square. I check the measurement afterwards with a tape.
02:52 I routered two grooves on the bed.
03:18 After drilling into the base of the fence I inserted two insert nuts. Passing two threaded knobs in the slots and tightening to the bottom of the fence. Because this is only a hobby pillar drill I am working with quite small scales, I wanted to reduce the depth of the fence allowing for a greater travel.
03:44 Checking it is all square.
04:00 The inner diameter of the opening on the original pillar drill bed is 20mm and just fits this forster bit. I will use this to help me centre the table later.
04:18 Lining up the two holes of the wooden and metal beds, based upon the forstner bit in the drill chuck, I trace underneath where I will fix the two together.
04:24 For drilling while the fence is closer to the centre of the chuck, I decided to cut a semicircle out to fit the chuck head when plunged downwards. I tried to do this by clamping the fence at first but realised I had to use the threaded knobs from underneath gripped more firmly.
04:45 I cut part of the right hand side of the fence to allow the arms of the pillar drill to swing.
05:01 Cutting the threaded knobs using the portabe bandsaw cutoff saw (see video • Homemade Portable Band... ).
05:17 Fitting the insert nuts to the underside of the table. I actually cocked this up and had to refill the old and drill new holes when one insert nut broke off.
05:32 Cutting out some blocks to use to set the wooden table against the metal one.
05:47 After setting up the table how I would expect to find it I glued the three blocks around the metal table and clamped them in place. Once dried I drilled this to ensure they don’t move.
7:02 I inlaid some 6 inch ruler into the bed. They are like go faster stripes. After routering the groove I used solvent free glue to set them into the table.
09:00 Cut of the excess rulers.
09:18 To give me an option of fence height, I added a couple more insert nuts to the rear side of the fence.
    09:50 Testing everything out.
I decided not to add a sacrificial scrap to the table because I imaged I could always use a piece of scrap on the bed. Maybe after a few month when I get an idea of how the table is used, I may add one.

Great Video! No music, no talking, just visual education. Savvas you showed for real that you made this table from waste offcuts in your shop, and it was outstanding! Liked the way you routed out for a steel-rule inlay into your work-top. 40 years in furniture making and joinery, never seen it done with steeel-rules, usually them stick on tapes or ribbons that do not last long. Very clear and understanding video. Top shelf! Thank you.

When you're cutting anything threaded, screw a nut onto the thread before cutting. Then, after cutting when you screw the nut off it will clear the cut thread. Tony.

I like it. You've inspired me to rebuild mine. I took hours building a decent setup for my drill press and it's worked great for me. My son came into my shop while I was gone and did some work on my drill press. He doesn't believe in sacrificial scraps of wood apparently because I came home to metal shaving filled area with a 2-1/8 inch hole cut into my top. He really deserved to have his butt paddled, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. He's 27 ;)
Oh well, now I can get some ideas from what you've done and make a new one.

As others have said, this is an exceptionally well thought out design. I was impressed with the dual height fence. Just one suggestion, from my experience the vacuum port needs to enter from the other side as the bit spins clock wise and tends to throw the chips to the right. I also have positioned my dust collector on the left and have noticed my error in doing so. Keep up the great content!

Wow you have some amazing skill... I watch hundreds of woodworking videos online and perfect my skills from others... the methods and techniques you use in both measurement, execution and video building are nothing short of incredible. I would love to hear you add a voiceover to your videos ... the editing is utterly perfect and the speed and tempo of your work with the editing makes things move along at a speed which is perfect ! So many people talk and talk... and slowly create their work... I much prefer to see things the way you build and at the speed you build. Can't wait to see more of your work. Guy - New Zealand

I have watched a lot of videos about building a table for a drill press and I have found that most of them spend a lot of time and effort making the fence for the table square to the table top. Yours was no exception. When I built mine, I determined that the fence does not have to be square to the table for the projects I do on my drill press. Take a look at my CZcams video called "Build an easy drill press guide" and see what you think. I would be most interested in hearing your comments. The fence does have to be moveable and solid.

    Hi,
Basically for the same reason that you had to tilt your drill press table to drill the hole for the dust extractor nozzle? You may have a work piece that needs a non 90 degree hole drilled or tapped. As you have cut the cutout for the pillar square, you wouldn't be able to tilt the table.
Unless of course you only require to drill 90 degree holes?

When I think of how many times I've had to work around the chuck bumping into my fence, I find that chuck clearance channel inspired. Those metal rule scales are a great replacement for my paper one which rubbed away long ago. Btw I am unfamiliar with what a "Pillar" drill press is?

    @johnrobinson1020 Před 5 lety

Good work; I would have preferred that you narrated the video but that's just me. Rules on a drill press table are not really necessary as the distance from the fence to the drill centre point remains constant no matter where you place the fence; you only need to measure the distance from your drill bit centre to the line on your work-piece once and then that distance will remain constant for any hole you drill sliding your work piece along the fence; same thing with a router table, I have seen men take several minutes setting up the fence, measuring both sides of the fence to make sure it is parallel on both sides to the router table top which it totally unnecessary, as same thing, the router bit remains parallel to the fence no matter if its parallel to the edge of the table edge or not. Of course this principal doesn't apply to a table saw where the fence must be parallel to the blade.
