- Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, knew she had married into a noble English family whose roots go back to the time of King Edward I. But seeing the family coat of arms in the Boughton House is when it all hit home.

I'm related to Edward Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu of Boughton on my grandmother's side. I guess he helped make Bonfire Night an official holiday in Britain.

It sounds like she keeps saying "Sandwich" (then references "the popular snack") but its actually written "Sanwich." Does the idea of the sandwich, or the word sandwich, actually trace back to sanwich?
Brook: Yeah I also noticed it. Sanwich is variant spelling of Sandwich. In many places in the USA some words are pronounced differently, rather sort. Influenced by other European languages. It's like some people don't pronounce 'r' in some words. Colour - color, favour - favor....

Legend has it that 4th Earl of Sandwich created the sandwich to save time while gambling and that woman married into that family
When the earl was given the title, he picked the port town of Sandwich which was a major port back then. Sanwich was probably a variation on the word, along with Sondwic, Sandwic, and Sandwice, according to Wikipedia.
I hope you've built your own tree! We have a great history, and it's fascinating to look at old documents. I've really lucked out and found photos of 4x great grandparents and such. Please don't cheat yourself out of your own history just because your husband's is so grand.
Ah Julie, I see we have the same ancestor - Sir Edward Montagu (1530 - 26-01-1602). I must add more of your side of the family to my family tree, which goes back to 1014
