  • Presenters Rosemary Shrager and Tim Wonnacott visit Hatfield House in Hertfordshire to reveal the story of Queen Victoria's visit there in 1846. Victoria was 27 years old and had been on the throne for nine years.
Renowned as a great political and social centre, Hatfield also had a very special connection to royalty: it had been the home of Elizabeth I. Tim reveals the story of a tree on the estate that links the two monarchs.
Confirmation of Victoria's visit only reached the host just ten days before she arrived, and using the queen's own diary and other first-hand accounts, Tim reveals the panic behind the scenes when the royal couple decided to drop in at the last minute - including a nearly disastrous clash between the royal carriage and the gates.

When you have 550 people for dinner one night, buying 709 bottles of wine for one week does not sound excessive. In the absence of any indication that the wine bottles were magnums or jeroboams, let us assume each bottle was about the size of a modern 750ml standard bottle. So 750 x 709/550 = 967ml/person. But the visit was for two nights so that would make 483ml of wine per person per night. In the UK today, a glass of wine is considered to be 175ml, so that works out to 2.76 glasses of wine per person per night. Currently the UK National Health Service recommends men and women should not drink more than 14 glasses of wine per week. Since this was a special occasion -- once in several lifetimes from the point of view of this Jacobean house -- it hards sounds like the Marquis was laying in stores for a bing-drinking Saturnalia.

Victorian wine glasses were far smaller than modern wine glasses. More the size of an aperitif glass today. But then again, most Victorian wines were fortified - sherries and ports -or very sweet wines like sauternes. All of which have high alcohol contents. Brandy and cognac were also de riguer at such formal events.
The Victorians loved to drink - and not just the men either. It would only be much much later in the period when abstinence came to be considered a virtue for anyone and even then it was almost exclusively a middle class value. The aristocracy and the labouring classes held firmly to their taste for a dram.

I've watched the Downton Abbey movie, and I have a pretty good idea of how stressful a royal visit can be. I also remember watching a documentary about kings beds on P.B.S. if I remember correctly, they had special beds made for a king or a queens visit, and those beds cost them alot of money for someone to sleep in for a possible 1 or 2 night stay. I also remember a rather expensive bed for a royal, and the royal did not even show up. But hey when you are royal. 🤷‍♀️

Growing up my family ate turtle soup. I even remember seeing a can of it on the shelf in our pantry. As an adult I got a turtle. My aunt came over and kept saying “oooh. I haven’t had turtle in a long time. 🤤”. I got to the point that I would hide my turtle when she came to visit.
