🏡🌍 Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke is visiting Knebworth House in Hertfordshire. Knebworth is home to Henry and Martha Lytton Cobbold and their family. Julie meets Martha, also an American, who has embraced living surrounded by British heritage - and is doing all she can to preserve Knebworth for future generations.
Music, literature, politics and The Crown all feature in the history of Knebworth - from the record-breaking rock concerts held in the park, to royal visits, to the literary genius of members of the Lytton family - each generation has contributed to its rich tapestry of history.

The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoffee.com/juliejmo...
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before. www.buymeacoffee.com/juliejmo...

Julie, Love your journeys into history! Ive just watched your episode on being related to Alberta...and your love of the name Mae...I immediately thought that it is an anagram of your daughters name Ema!!( not sure if your Emma has one or 2 m's).
These “ houses” are Castles!! So amazing! Can’t imagine living in something so full of history and memories!!
I totally agree with you. It must be a challenge trying to make it as comfortable for the family, and to take care of all the historic possessions. I’ve received so many gifts from friends and I’ve broken as many when I tried to clean them. I was given a beautiful glass unicorn, I picked it up to clean it, I dropped it, and it decapitated! Yep, you heard it.
These videos and the production is so much better than anything on TV! Thank you!
Wow, thank you!
I was going to comment the same thing. This content is jaw dropping and done just as well or better than any other production on TV.
Martha’s voice has taken on some British inflection. How is it that you haven’t gone native yet?
What an interesting talk and beautiful estate!
As a linguist, I was fascinated to hear how each of you have picked up varying qualities of British dialects. One that I noticed you both do is added a crispness to your consonants that in American English dialects is usually softened. 😊
Bits & bob’s telling a story really is the essence of these beautiful historical homes. Thank you Julie for showing us these incredible properties and important parts of history.
As a Canadian the history of these stunning places just simply astounds me … ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
What an amazing home.
Incredible family stories.
My favourite is the lady that put the greedy priest in his place.😂
Yes, houses are alive and can change as long as it’s done correctly, tastefully. So Beautiful!
I am in awe of these women! Oh, the house is amazing! 😊
I absolutely love your video's I'm an English man living in Portugal now and I'm very proud of my English heritage .We have so many wonderful stately homes and beautiful gardens keep making your wonderful video's ❤️ 😂
Beautiful Knebworth House. So many stories of various women and the lives they lived. Thank you Julie. ❤😊
It's 2.46 am, and I've just finished watching this. What a blessed life some people have. It's not easy. I have a listed building, and it's hard to find people to do work to it. The trades are vanishing, and the prices are going sky high. So sad.
I do not really know what to say , just amazing ı have gone through lots of feelings during watching it , very touched by the story of Lady Constance and indeed learned many things .
Thank you 🙂
When I saw the movie, “Mary Poppins” upon its release (yes I AM that old!) the song”Sister Suffragette” has a line that says, “Our daughter’s daughters will adore us & they’ll sing in great full chorus, “Well, done, Sister Suffragette!” My late Mom (99) told me then, 1965, that her Mother had marched here in the United States for Women to have the right to vote, I AM her daughter’s daughter!😊
Very enjoyable tour by the Chatelaine & yourself. The intricate detail in that room (can’t remember what its purpose is now, though it has no plumbing) & the Oriental bed is just exquisite. I wouldn’t want to be responsible for maintaining it all. The efforts of those that have are truly remarkable. As was the crusade of Lady Constance. A brave & indomitable woman. A wonderful visit! Thanks very much. 😊
The word chatelaine is only applicable to the kady in a French chateau. It is also used for the device holding keys etc at the waist but worn by the Housekeeper.
I deeply appreciate your content. Julie has one of those special personalities that can't be taught or developed, where her mood and energy are contagious.
P.S. I predict Julie will have a British accent by 2027. 😘
Hopefully she will also have a much better understanding of our way of life!
I saw her program, An Aristocrats Guide......"
Another American trying to put a price on everything she saw. The owners were most gracious and generous with their time.
She seemed to put a price on everything they were doing.
I don’t believe so. She could hop back and forth with American and British accents.
The best and most moving part of this video is the segment about Lady Constance's involvement with the suffragette movement. It's admirable to see someone of her social class and privilege sacrifice her own comfort to fight for social justice for women.
The entire English speaking world granted the women’s right to vote within a few years of each other. The British version was more radical where they burned buildings and set off bombs. Simon Webb wrote a short book about it. What’s ironic is that 95% of the men in the world did not have the right to vote at the time either.
Julie, I think if I had to choose, this is by far my favorite house of all the homes you've done thus far, or I might add that I've seen. I love hearing all the dates and histories of these national treasures! I think us as Americans might appreciate these places (even the derelict ones) so much more because here in the States, it feels like very few appreciate our histories and would rather tear it down and as the song goes..put up a parking lot. Which makes me so sad. To have so much information saved, just like Mapperton! I will say it breaks my heart that the British parliament doesn't set aside money to help in the upkeep of these great places. I really don't know what the right answer is, money, tax breaks, free supplies, whatever just so they aren't lost for future generations. I think in school they should teach more to the children about such fantastic places, even here in the states, maybe it would take root in a few brains and when they grow up will feel the need to save places not rip them down. In closing I would like to say THANK YOU for all your hard work in making these wonderful videos to share with us here across the pond. I'm 57 and on disability (thanks to a very bad back) I have family in Germany and have been to visit before my teen yrs..I know they'll prob never be another visit across the ocean so to have these to watch with your behind the scenes bits is honestly such a joy!! Wishing all a wonderful summer, sending lots of love and prayers to us all in these crazy times we now live in. Take care and God Bless 🙏🏼❤️
What an magnificent piece of glorious art ! I would LOVE to see you visit Lady Colin Campbell at Castle Goring!
I love Lady Colin Campbell's book about Diana! ❤
I absolutely loved Lady Constance’s story! The color palate of Knebworth House is magnificent. This is the first viewing of an Armory room that I remember you showing. Very interesting. Thank you for this episode.
Enjoyed so much and seeing all the family changes too. Thankfully owned by them so they can make these changes! Wonderful!!
Such a beautiful House! And the information about Historic House membership is interesting and important. The costs of keeping up these houses is much more than one family can undertake and I believe anyone who tours these houses and enjoys visiting gardens, beautiful estates should be willing to invest in making sure our grandchildren and future generations have that same privilege. I wish I had the resources to help out.
Julie, this episode is a triumph. Very moving and I have learnt so much! Thankyou!
Love hearing the history of these houses
Best video ever! Absolutely cannot wait to visit both of you and see these houses in person. Grazie da Texas come sempre ❤
My heart skipped a bit at when I saw that corvette. You need to do an episode on the car!
this place is incredible! ty so much for the splendid tour.
Fascinating! I really enjoyed this video. Thank you, Julie!
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's the piece about the women's suffrage movement that gets it. Absolutely incredible, daunting, and stunning what she went through for others using her nobility for such a humane purpose. Stirs one on a soul level. I felt better for watching it and elevated in every way. Thanks Viscountess. 🎉 Job so well done!
Oh my what historic history behind the women’s rights movement fascinated by their courage and determination not to mention the sacrifices 😢😢 ❤❤
Amazing treasures and ongoing restoration.
What a beautiful home! Here in Canada, Toronto has a Lytton Blvd! Once upon a time, my Great Grandparents lived on that street.
Very cheerful ambiance! Wonderful Home
Eu sou nova aqui também sou do Brasil
Fantastic video, Julie.
Wonderful history, especially the Suffragette one.
This is my favorite house so far
Hi Julie, "WOW" I absolutely love the history of Knebworth House, I love Lady Constance and her story. The efforts, the time and now their health the Suffragettes put into the movement so woman can vote. We need to treasure every right as women that we have and hold onto them. Martha was a lovely woman I just loved her. Jill was such a pleaser as well, these woman like you are well versed in the history of the family, keeping them alive and sharing them with the world, is truly amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful home and estate with us. Love from N.Y.
Speaking of famous houses used for TV /movies...Just happened upon the 1996/97 series: Tom Jones. About half way though first episode the cast arrives at a gateway flaked b y columns with eagles atop...Mapperton!
Fascinating history of the house and its inhabitants! Loved the "peaks" at the original structure, inside and outside. Such exquisite features and appointments throughout! Would love to visit!
Stunning home Julie and this American lady sounds very British. Another great video ❤
😊 thank you
Wow! Love your Corvette convertible!
* * What a great job you're doing Julie! BRAVO! * *
I love the show the crown. Thank you Julie for everything you do❤
If I was wealthy I would support the restoration of the houses/castles my ancestors lived so that members of my family might be able to do genealogical tours of these places on their trip to England. As far as I know I am relate to the Howard family and some early Duke's of Norfolk so my money would go to supporting those estates.
They need to make a movie out this story. Thanks for sharing
This is wonderful to see w/ out slightly eccentric, lovely, enthusiastic host.
Thank you for this.
as always fascinating
Wonderful production and narrative. Fabulous estate!!
Would love to see some rooms the family lives in daily. I am addicted to your videos. Ty
Goodie, love these videos
What an amazing castle and family history ❤❤❤Thanks for sharing 😍😘
Gotta go rustle me up some breakfast Julie, then I’ll settle down to watch!
So wonderful. Thank you.
Loved every minute of this video. Ty.
Fascinating. Thank you.
Wonderful history and beautiful, castle and home.
The manors and stories behind the manors and the people are very interesting 💜
So beautiful
Beautiful.
Fabulous estate! I would never be able to find my keys or purse! My little house is only 1,250 Sq/Ft and I can't find my keys.
If the cat gets in, you'd never find it!
I can’t imagine building such a huge place. Most rich people back then built to and beyond the limits of their wealth. Hence why so many crumbled to quickly and are gone today.
Love it
Hi🤗 at 27:54 I really believe I see the post on the bed rise and fall slightly 😳 is it just me? Great show by the way and thank you 🤗
an extraordinarily pretty Victorian home
I do remember this castle from the movie called Duel of Hearts
What a fascinating time. I really appreciate your enthusiasm for looking into your new reality. And it is so much fun to be able to be a voyeur here . . . which may be cringeworthy and so perhaps this makes me also sensitive to . . . being told that you are after someone’s job is a little cringey . . . ? Dunno. Anyway it’s amazing. Don’t believe in ghosts but there may be mold in the bedroom of Elizabeth which would explain the breathing issues of guests. Heat it and bleach it. Lol
That was just stunning and what an amazing lady, to fight for women's rights! It opens your eyes when you know you have £14,000,000.00 repair work to do on the roof! I wish them well in their endeavours!
I love how you both pronounce "all" like the English.
Would make a great momie about Con
So many great ladies past and present. It would help me if you would consider putting their names on screen. I had a hard time trying to figure out how to spell Bower Liton which turned out to be Bulwer Litton.
Edit: Lytton
I luv your strawberry shirt🍓🍓🍓🍓
Good for her. She stopped allowing The Church to bully her.
❤
is a French first and last name perhaps of descent from the House of Burgundy, but it would carry the particle "de" Montagu
I love this video, so interesting. I enjoy all your videos. However, I watched a couple on your facebook today, one was about 5 worst monarchs, and I found the background music very distracting and too loud, it felt quite relentless and my brain had to fight to listen to you properly. I felt so much calmer watching this video, I could just concentrate on what you and the other lady are saying and there was just intermittent music. If you must have background music on your videos, would you please lower the volume a bit when you are talking and preferably not have it right the way through a whole video , maybe edit it in for emphasis of dramatic bits as you have in this one. So much better to watch. Many thanks for your consideration of this.
Your accents arent QUITE American anymore. Both of your stressers on syllables have changed. Almost sounds Irish. For quarter, you guys say "Kuar-ter" instead of the quick American "korter". And the way you both say "All" (Oll) as opposed to American (Awl) sounds more British than American now with rounded vowels. She also says "fresha" instead of "fresher" I love it! Happened to my cousins voice too after she moved to the UK from Illinois. Sounds completely different.
No radiators in the room? probably because this was a summer house. They would have decamped to another house, or a different section of the mansion, during the winter.
🙏💜🙇🏻♀️
@BritishAirways I’m sorry - but where oh where is the sponsorship?
Alright, Julie. Video Minute 22:27, No plumbing in this room? They would have used chamber pots instead of a toilet. To wash up, they would have had a pitcher and saucer for the job. And probably most importantly, they would have had black servants to assist them, so they really would not have had to work very hard, any of them.
Is that a ghost floating by at 23 to 23:13 at the Chinese bridal bed.
Julie has met her match..lol
Where is Martha from in the USA? What is her story with the British aristocracy? Curious to know.
Júlie eu queria ser sua amiga e meu sonho fá
This is such a great video but those bright flashes of light in the video almost burned out my eyeballs. That hurt my eyes. How about finding something less bright.
like 888
Victorian and gothic? Did you mean that? Not also tudor stuart elizabethian georgian or regency?
Maybe Taylor Swift can do a show or two here to help bring in some needed funds for the restorations!
Video Minute 33:50, So far I am not impressed with the Suffragette's. The men are supposed to be doing this work for us. As well as that, our servants are supposed to be doing this labor for us. Instead of improving the lives of women, it seems to me that all their activity has done nothing but return us to a state of indentured servitude.
Re-watching with a purpose: The preservation of these historic homes would not be a problem if we were having lots of children. The birth control influence in my life has done nothing to help improve the quality of my family's life. I see the same thing when I listen to the comments in this, and in other video's on the preservation of old homes. The men, for one thing, are supposed to be protecting us women, and they are not doing that. The men in my life instead mistreat me continually, forcing me to do labor that the house servants were supposed to be doing. The servants, instead of doing the labor at our homes that they know they are supposed to be doing, are instead constantly trying to accuse my family of all manner of criminal conduct, and only for the purpose of extorting cash from us. No amount of prayer to God as improved this situation. Instead, it just keeps getting worse. For example, instead of correcting their behavior, the homosexuals instead close down the Northgate Azteca, the Bartell's, and the Walgreens. Instead of replacing these businesses with something else, they have abandoned our community. The Italian restaurant at the South end of Lake City way, where Betty and Lloyd Schiess used to take us for dinner, the building is now a liquor store. Instead of hosting churches, a bowling alley or a roller skating rink where the children can safely play, they have opened strip clubs, where they torture and force our women to strip off their clothing and dance naked in public. The police, instead of closing down these illegal strip clubs, do nothing more than race up and down Lake City Way, blowing off their sirens to intimidate everyone. It is no exaggeration to say that Lake City has descended into hell.
I always think how futile the British Sufferigette movement was because New Zealand Women had the vote since 1893😊
This lady talks like she has a British accent
Pa-do-gah? Lolz
This women does not choke on modesty.
Video Minute 8:45, Ms. Montagu mentions all the Rock and Roll concerts that have performed on the Nebworth Mansion property. There is nothing attractive about modern Rock and Roll. The lyrics abound with death threats, rape, murder, threats to send us to hell - I am not in the least interested in this music. It offends my ears. I hate it passionately. There is nothing lovely, nothing inspiring, nothing wholesome, nothing that supports honest and law abiding conduct in modern Rock and Roll music. We should instead be encouraging classical musicians to play concerts. We should be having dance balls in this home. We should be talking to each other, encouraging our children to marry each other and have large families.
lovely home but I googled Owen Meredith to see why he wrote. Sadly his time as viceroy was pretty shocking. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Bulwer-Lytton,_1st_Earl_of_Lytton
