When you mix your chemistry fresh every time, there's no danger of stock solution going bad on the shelf. If you've ever had the experience of using expired chemicals, you'll appreciate this point.

I just mixed up some D-23 last month, but I don't use it once or a few times and discard it -- rather, I replenish it. With just one more ingredient, sodium metaborate, (or two to make that one, if you can't find it) you can make replenisher. Season your stock solution with three rolls per liter, then replace the solution with 22 ml of replenisher for each additional roll processed. There are many articles and videos around about doing this. You get the stock solution results, and you can (if you follow instructions) keep the same developer running for years. At 22 ml of replenisher for each roll (and a fresh batch of stock when you've used replenisher equal to half the volume of your stock solution) this is very inexpensive to make and it's just like using fresh developer each time.
The stock solution will keep for many months in a sealed bottle, and the replenisher the same, so even if you only process a couple rolls a month it works well, it's very economical.
Tanning
Your example photos using D-23 show a nice range of what the D-23 can do. Thank You!
Thank you:)
Thank you for this excellent video, reminding us of the benefits of D23!
Thank you :)
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge.
Thank you very much for this video!
I am only shooting 35mm film since more than 40 years now, but I always try to get low contrast and high resolution negatives because I like the tonal range much more than of a high contrast negative. Same as you. Of course, I have found my preferred film /developer combination, but I will give a try to the Kodak developer. Sorry for my bad english and greetings from Berlin to you! 🖐🏻😊Denis
Thank you mr. Denis, very nice : )
Thank you so much for your sharing darkroom experienced friend, :D
Thank you so much my friend :)
Thank you for sharing, and for this explanations
Thank you so much:)
This was a wonderful video. I learnt all I needed to know about D23 from this. Subscribing.
Glad it was helpful!
Well, the 5 liter Xtol was intended for labs, where 40 rolls are nothing. For amateurs it was offered in 1 litre pack.
Good video ! I've been using D-23 , two stage developer for years ..... It's a great developer . 35mm / 120mm whatever .... As long as it's shot at about box speed then I develop all makes of film the same .
4 min in the first solution and 3 min in the second ..... No fuss , always great ..... I did have a problem once with Bergger Pancro 400 . Had to switch to rodinal but other than that , it's always treated me well .....
Thank you Mr. Caradies :)
Gong Xi Fa Chai 🧧. Great content !
Yi chi fa chai :)Thank U.
Estoy contento muchas gracias.
Thank you. I've learned a lot from your video. Just a suggestion, any chance you can make a review for a Kodak Retina Reflex, actually the Reflex IV. I have been in love with Nikon for years, just recently got one Kodak from an old neighbor man. Been searching for it's experience. No luck.
Great suggestion!
Thanks for sharing.. You can add Chinese subtitles to perfect
Thank you :)
Good morning Mr Tanno,
have you ever used the D.23 1 + 1 dilution to develop the Bergger 4x5?
With what development time?
Thank you
giampiero duronio
I am so sorry i don't know the time of 1+1、thank you anyway
i mixed up 500 mls which used 1+1 dilution BUT I found the recommended times were far too SHORT and I got very Thin Negatives I added a very small amount of Sodium Carbonate anhydrous and got better negs . My Sodium Sulphite is VERY OLD now -- do you think it has got oxidised or some-thing over time and lost its Alkalinity ?
I don't know if Sodium Sulphite expires but I had an experience when I used Kodak Xtol powder developer which had expired for a long time and 2 rolls film were ruined.
Great video! Do you know the minimum amount of this developer required for a single roll of film? I have a tiny little daylight development box that only holds 200ml of developer so I have to be quite careful with dilutions
I think for the 200ml. stock dilution will be better. Thanks :)
What development time do you suggest for Fomopan classic 100 with D23 stock? Which would be better Stock, 1+1 or 1+3?
if you google "massive dev chart", you can find the "suggested" development times. For fomapan 100, shot at box speed of 100, it suggests to develop in d-23 for 11 minutes, in 20C/68F temperature of the developer, for all film types, (35mm, 120, and sheet film).
If you want to push the same film by 1 stop and shoot at iso 200, it recommends development time of 15 minutes.
Of course, you'll have to experiment on your own and adjust the development times as you see fit.
Have you ever used 2 bath development with d-23? If so what do you use for your second bath and what time do you develop it for ?
Sorry I haven't used 2 bath developmrnt.
What do you use to push 5222?
I use HC-110 for pushing the 5222
