Do you know the meaning of the saying, âPaâlante, como los de Alicanteâ? If youâre from the English-speaking world, then maybe not. But you should! It means âForward, like the people of Alicanteâ. In Spain, this popular saying defines the people of Alicante by their drive, determination and spirit. Historically, this port city on the Costa Blanca has faced many struggles - be they due to war or economic troubles - but the people of Alicante have persevered, with their heads held high, and pressed forward.
The late 1950s and 60s were a transformative time for the city. The growth of global tourism drove holidaymakers to locations like Alicante, which enjoyed beautiful climates year-round. The local economy benefited greatly from well-funded construction projects such as hotels and complexes that accompanied this increase in tourism, and in turn, the extra visitors drove an increase in the number of wonderful restaurants, bars and cafés Alicante has to offer.
At the heart of Alicante is an energy - a culture and identity that has persevered through the growth of the tourism here. The idyllic and instagrammable paved streets of the Barrio de Santa Cruz lead you on a path around the mountain at the centre of the city, Monte Benacantil, and the ancient walls of the Castillo de Santa Barbara on its peak. The castle is visible from everywhere in the city, whether youâre soaking up some sun at the beach, or shopping for fresh local produce in Alicanteâs Mercado Central.
With neighbors like the infamous Benidorm, I had a few assumptions about the nature of tourism in the city, and I couldnât have been more wrong. The real, authentic Alicante is here and waiting for you, and I could feel it from the moment we landed.
The city of Alicante is around 1,260 miles from London. To get there, we chose the way youâll also most likely be using, which is to fly! We flew from Gatwick airport, so to start our trip in style, we booked ourselves into the Number 1 Lounge. Unlimited food and drink was a nice way to enjoy the free WiFi, which was perfect for some extra last-minute research and filling our Netflix downloads for the plane. If you fancy starting your holiday like a VIP, you can use the Holiday Extras app to book yours.
Alicante has its own airport, so getting in is easy. A flight from Gatwick to Alicante takes only around 2.5 hours. Then, the airport is just a 20 minute drive away from the town centre. Our recommendation? Book yourself a private transfer or taxi. The door to door service is the most hassle-free option. Alternatively, you can take the C6 bus from Alicante Airport into the city, which arrives every 20 minutes throughout the daytime or once an hour between midnight and 5am, and takes just 20 minutes.
We wanted to soak in as much of the Alicante experience as we could, so weâre doing most of our exploring by foot. Many of the best sights in Alicante are all within walking distance of one another. We used Google Maps to plan our routes. Perfect if youâre planning on doing a lot of walking, but itâll also show you your public transport options too, so youâll know if you could save time by opting to catch a tram instead.
Alicante is full of energy, so itâs no surprise that this city attracts party people, stag doâs and hen nights. But if you know where to look, it can also be serene, idyllic and a history loverâs paradise⊠if you know where to look.
So on our first morning in Alicante, we made our way over to the Castillo de Santa Barbara to get the best views over Alicante. On our way there, we passed the Playa del Postiguet, or Postiguet Beach, and naturally, had to stop to enjoy it.

Can you tell me is it similar to Tenerife ? Job / business perspective ? Iâm thinking to move there from Tenerife. All people good there ? Many tourists.?
Why?
I wish all tourists were like you. ..Spain is a very beautiful country and it is really worth going. I am very lucky to live in Alicanteđ
I was there just now, nice city, but so boring and too calm, good for old people. People are also not polite, some are ofcourse, but many of them seem stupid and ignorant and nobody speaks english. Its good for a couple of days just to see the place which is beautiful.

Thanks for you top tips! Really helpful to know. What was favourite place to go in Alicante?
Of course, my favorite was Santa BĂĄrbara. I recommend everyone to visit here at sunset. They can use a lift, but climbing by foot also may be a great experience. In addition, it isn't introduced in this video, but MARQ ( an archeological museum ) was also interesting for me.

Well, it depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for sun, beaches, good weather, excellent food and high quality tourist servicies at a reasonable price, then Alicante is a good choice, among a hundred others on de Spanish Mediterranean coast. But, on the other hand, it is not a particularly beautiful place. There are some one thousand more beautiful places in Spain.

Alicante is wonderful! Have you visited Spain?
@@HolidayExtrasTravelGuides Yes but only Malaga-Nerja-Frigiliana. I lived there 6 months. And I was thinking to move some day in Spain, for good. :D
Spent a summer there in '80's as a young teen while between terms and my aunt rented a separate apartment for my cousins and I in Calpe! The buildings are the 2 highrises with the closest pool to the cliffs. Also got alcohol poisoning and to this day the mere mention of Sangria makes me start gagging! It's amazing how much Calpe has grown! I remember getting huge bags of mussles for like a buck straight from the fisherman when they brought their haul in. Word of advice: eat mussles immediately not the next day! Remember being on a car ride through the windy mountain roads after eating day old mussles....yeah, didn't end well for any of us.

I woke up today thinking that I "want" to visit Alicante, but after your video I found out that I "NEED" To Visit Alicante!
Love this video! What's the opening background music please?
Thank you very much for this video, it's really inspiring!:) Do you know by chance from which side of Santa Barbara castle it's easier to reach the beach Postiguet by walking (from the east side of the old town or from the west side)? We are going with my elderly parents and small son in the beginning of September, and I can't make up my mind whether to book a flat somewhere in the center (i.e. plaza de Toros) or north from Plaza Mar 2 (for example, Carolinas Altas/Bajas) to make sure it's not too tiring for them walking to and from the beach every day.
Jekaterina Ivanova Iâm really late but Iâm a spanish born but half American resident here. In future reference, Postiguet is a shallow, beautiful beach, but about convenience, Plaza De Toros. I live around the center and itâs really easy to get to the beach. Plaza de Toros is just a bit above from the center, so itâs closer, but I donât really know because Iâm not a geographical expert, sorry if I was late, I literally just rewatched this video for fun, heh. Have a good day.

we used to have an apartment in torrevieja, sold it 2 years ago, to this day i regret it, biggest mistake of my life, i loved it there, regarding the upgrade of the wasteland in the harbour, they have been promising to do work there for years, shopping centre with underground car park, deepen the harbour so cruise ships, can come, be interesting to see if they finally do something,
And ofcourse pay a visit to the best Italian restaurant in the old town, named: la Casa de la Pizza Alicante, a real recommendation

In the mountain of the Ban tribe the great Alexander founded one of the 23 Alexandrias in the world. The name of Alicante comes from Alexander the founder. One of the most beautiful mediterranian landscapes.
No, Alicante comes from the Moors who names it Al Akante from Arabic in which it means city of lights.
