  • Today, we discuss another distinguished classic in the Rolex GMT library, a category in the brand which began its story in 1954, with the introduction of the reference number 6542. The Rolex shown here is 16710 commonly known as the Coke GMT, produced from 1989 to 2005 which makes the model more neo- vintage than new. Where the Coke bezel lacks in popularity compared to other more famous GmTs, it makes up for it in terms of rarity and individuality. personally I’ve always been more of a coca cola fan as you can see, but let’s get back on topic.
First, let's take a look at the specifications, starting with its case size at 40mm, housed in a 3185 movement at 47mm lug to lug width and 20mm in strap width at only 12mm thick (excluding the cyclops) providing for 100 meters of water resistance when new, covered in sapphire glass. This one we have here was produced in 1991, fitted with a jubilee bracelet.
The 'Coke' nickname stems from Its red and black aluminium bezel reminiscent of a classic Coca-Cola colour scheme. On this particular one, shows a more deeper fading in the red part of the bezel and some signs of patina developing.
Now let us compare it to its sibling models and similar timepieces In the Rolex family itself, the 'Pepsi' and 'Batman' models often steal the spotlight. The 'Pepsi' models feature a red and blue bezel, while the 'Batman' model features a black and blue variant. However, the 'Coke Bezel' does have its subtle and distinct character that sets it apart.
The feel and experience of wearing the Rolex of the 5-digit reference number series represents an era of the finer and thinner cased GMTs. The thinner profile allows for this watch to fit under any cuff, striking the perfect balance, suitable for various wrist sizes. The Jubilee bracelet adds a touch of elegance and comfort, enhancing the overall luxury experience.
For example this one is actually highly collectable as the coke bezel has been discontinued since 2005, and also with a Tritium dial that stopped production after 1997. As mention earlier, the thin profile also offers a smaller case and a slimmer look, if you struggle to fit the newer super cases. These older cases also offer the benefit of exposed drilled lugs where you can swap straps with just a toothpick.
Originally designed for pilots, The first GMT-Master, was the official watch of Pan American World Airways (more known as Pan Am). So whether you're jetting off on an adventure or attending a black-tie event, the 'Coke Bezel' adapts effortlessly. More importantly, the GMT function allows you to track multiple time zones, making it an ideal companion for frequent travellers crossing time zones with individual tastes.
Of course, every timepiece has its limitations. One notable drawback is its scarcity in the market and difficulty to find satisfactory ones in terms of condition and price. In terms of wear, the aluminium bezel offers a vintage appeal but its more prone to scratches compared to newer ceramic ones. I would treat the like any vintage watch in terms of the water resistance and maintenance. So let us know how you feel or rank this one amongst the GMT library leaving your comments below.

I have a 1990, best daily watch on the planet! I see yours also has the seconds hand with the lume pip slightly further towards the end of the hand than the typical seconds hand. I see this occasionally in the early 90s but not really after 1995 or so. I with this made our watches slightly more valuable 🤣 Maybe we need to nickname these "error seconds hand" versions haha

Nice! Wish I still had my 1995 example. Thankfully, I now have a 16570 Explorer 2 Polar, which is a great watch.

Thanks, yes the Pepsi and Sprite are both spectacular. Perhaps this means you need the Coke too., in order to make the softdrink trio of GMTs 😝👍

I bought one in the 2000 and kept it in the box it was sold in. Wonder what it’s worth now.
