  • We all love the character of Mr. Miyagi in the "Karate Kid" movies for his dry-witty humor and impeccable karate skills. But did you know Mr. Miyagi has a dark backstory and is influenced by real life karate masters like Chōjun Miyagi, founder of the Goju-Ryu style of Karate, and Fumio Demura sensei to Hollywood stars and famous fighters.
    This video dives deep into the history of this iconic character from his origins as a fisherman in Okinawa, Japan to his infamous job as the apartment building's handyman. We all know Mr. Miyagi wears many hats but if you weren't impressed enough, check this video out! The True Story Behind The Karate Kid's Mr. Miyagi.

      Pat Johnson taught Tang Soo Do. He earned his black belt in Tang Soo Do-Moo Duk Kwan in 1964 in South Korea while in the U.S. Army. In 1967 or so he relocated to Los Angeles and switched over to the Chuck Norris system of Tang Soo Do. My instructor is a Norris black belt from the 1970s and Pat was one of his teachers. I've never heard or read anything about Pat being a Goju-ryu stylist.

    • @Rhythmicons
      @Rhythmicons Před 3 lety

      @@barrettokarate You are right, I should have verified that fact before posting it. My father died in 2019 so I couldn't really ask him but he switched over to Goju at some point before moving to Arkansas in the early 70s. We both studied under Bo Hardy in Taiho-Ryu, in Pine Bluff but my dad wasn't really a dedicated martial artist. When we watched the movie on VHS or HBO in the 80s he said "Oh, that's Pat Johnson" and he told me about it. Of course the film was super popular on the playground but nobody ever believed me when I told him that because, what are the odds. He was teaching Mary Mouser piano lessons around 2001-2. I remember because he had to play a job at her grandmother's house, but he was recovering from a heart attack, but I wasn't allowed to go help him set his equipment up. He had to wear a jacket and was sweating his ass off in the heat. I was pissed because I was concerned about his health. I realize that you probably think I'm bullshidoing about this, but I love my dad and I just wanted to share this unique coincidence with people. His health was in decline when Cobra Kai came out and didn't really find it as fascinating as I did. Thanks again for the correction.

    Certainly among my favorite movies of the 80's. Miyagi was a tough love,but encouraging character in these movies indeed. A backstory movie about him would be great that tells about what he did growing up,learning karate,what his family and community were like. And have it lead up to the time he ends up in the same city,and same apartment complex, as Daniel character. These movies inspire one to never give up in the face of life's challenges and hard times. It will knock us down often,but we have to keep finding a way to move forward,hold onto to all the things that are important for sure.

    I had the privilege of studying Goju Ryu style Karate in my hometown in Italy, where every year Sensei Toshio Tamano would come to visit our dojo. Toshio Tamano was a direct student of Seikichi Toguchi and was nominated by him as the responsible person for Shorei Kan (the school of Toguchi) in the United States, and later in Europe.
    I remember once asking him about the style in the Karate Kid franchise because it was one of my favorite movies, and he told me that the director, John Avildsen, was also a student of Goju Ryu, which influenced the decision to use this particular style. While I haven't found any online sources confirming Avildsen's study of Karate, I trust Sensei Tamano.
    It's true that Goju Ryu wasn't as widely popular as Shotokan, which was used by the Cobra Kai students in the Karate Kid movie. It's possible that the filmmakers wanted to pay homage to Master Toguchi and Mr. Miyagi by featuring this style in a prominent movie. Using a less common style like Goju Ryu could have added a unique and authentic touch to the film, showcasing the diversity of martial arts.

    It was in 70's when a Shaw Brothers movie "Shaolin Martial Arts" came out and had the theme used in "The Karate Kid" where a master gives what seems like boring chores to the student, but unbeknownst to the student, the chores are creating muscle memory as a basis for learning the actual kung fu. In KK, it was painting and sanding... in SMA it was catching fish and gathering wood that needed to be debarked. The OTHER major them of "Shaolin Martial Arts" was used in "Kill Bill" when Pai Mei had Kiddo destroying her fingers to strengthen them to attack in VERY limited space.debunked. If you haven't seen SMA, I strongly recommend seeing it, as well as Executioners. Enjoy!

    I can't speak for everybody, but I want to watch a Miyagi prequel series set in Japan. Capture how his father taught him and Sato karate. Tell the story about his romantic relationship with Yukie that destroyed his best friend who was arranged to marry her. Later seasons could focus on World War 2, his relationship with Mrs. Miyagi, and how he earned the medal of honor. The end. The title of the series could simply be called... *Miyagi* 👍

    I always been a fan of the mr.miyagi character. He was the reason i was with team daniel. The miyagi-do lineage is important, thats why julie pierce and chozen should comeback to help team daniel. Team johnny has got kreese back properly he will have terry silver,mike barnes in his corner too.
    Chozen learnt from sato, sato was the student of mr.miyagi's father. Somehow the balance of daniel,julie and chozen teaching together to keep the memory and linegage of the miyagi-do karate going. Just some ideas. More flashbacks of mr.miyagi in cobra kai season 2 or 3 would be amazing to see. R.i.p pat

    Cobra Kai series is apparently going to delve into myagi's past a little bit. Has me so nervous because it's very common these days do tear down good characters to make them 'more edgy', 'more relatable and flawed'...fuck that. There is no need to destroy myagi's legacy to shine on all the johnny lawrence is the true hero of karate kid fanboy club. Keep myagi golden as he always has been.
