  • ActiveTrack does a great job at tracking a fast moving subject in open space, but when it comes to obstacles... yeah, I would rather not use my $1500 drone to track me. I'll leave that to the Skydio.

    For those wondering why I entered the “fast” ActiveTrack mode when using the Mavic 2 - this was a necessity in this test to keep up with me on my fast moving Boosted Board. It shows a flaw in DJI’s drones when tracking in the form of compromise, only the front and back obstacle avoidance sensors were enabled. Trying to put the Mavic 2 on the level of the Skydio 2 immediately shows its weakness, it doesn’t make this test any less “fair.”

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  Před 4 lety +23

      @Lon Denard Look at the top right corner in the screen recording (1:12). See how the icon showing the status of the obstacle avoidance sensors are fully lit up in green? Yeah... obstacle avoidance WAS turned on. Delete your comments because you are wrong, Lon.

      @davidwalker2402 Před 4 lety +18

      Billy Kyle active track on skydio is not tracking, it’s first and most important thing is to avoid obstacles, so you can see skydio first and foremost will push the focus on the obstacle it has great difficulty in keeping the subject in the Centre, so what people are watching your telling them to watch, which is the drone avoiding obstacles. But looking at the footage which is supposed to Centre in on you well that part is pretty poor.
      You are still putting motorists at great risk, it was clear in some parts you tried to avoid but in the most it looked as if you couldn’t do diddly squat about it nor did you care.

    • @davidwalker2402
      @davidwalker2402 Před 4 lety +6

      Lon Denard so at 17.29 you think it’s ok just because it didn’t hit the car but only came close, remember skydio don’t guarantee to avoid moving subjects and it’s clearly a breech of the rules and it happened a couple of times in the video. It loses framing because it’s designed to avoid obstacles first and foremost so your drawn away from the subject to the obstacle, if you showed this footage to anyone who knows nothing about drones they would immediately think the camera man had one to many lol 😂

    A simply scrumptious, video. Man. I missed the mark. I'm 64. I'm not getting on a skateboard.. Man. I wish I could get on a skateboard. A motorized skateboard with one of these drones. That was simply Awesome! 360° accident avoidance. And then we were watching it think through obstacles. It was fabulous!
    So yeah. I'm one of those MavicPro folk. An easy chair, pilot. And I'm not goin', anywhere. My drone is. But that's definitely a cool tracking drone. Absolutely lovely. The side shots. The rear shot. The forward shot. Oh yeah. And so fluid with its motion. Those guys programmed a goodie. It's a swell device. And it's going to make a slew of awesome videos. Now everybody's going to want a battery-powered skateboard. Look what you've done! What are your parents going to say? They're going to want skateboards now also. Do you really want to go out skateboarding with your parents? No. Of course not. And because you don't want see your parents, arrested. Because they will be acting like children. And then what are you going to do? See what happens when you set this kind of example for your parents? And can you imagine the pile up of 60 something-year-olds at the bottom of the hill? It won't be a pretty sight.
    I am a rock and roller. I sit at home. And I rock and roll, my drone. From my captains, chair. And I'm like Capt. Kirk on the bridge of the Enterprise. Sulu hard a stern! Give me all you've got, Scotty! I know about the God damned gimbal lock! Down a little more. Forward. Forward. Houston. Tranquilized, base. The Enterprise has landed. And I don't have to get out of the captains chair.
    So actually the SKY DI oh.. Kind of reminds me of my dog. You not only have to walk the dog. You have to play with the dog. Which means running and jumping and throwing balls and sticks. You have to be interactive with the dog. And you have to be interactive with that SKY DI oh. That's like work. I'm done working. I'm retired. And so the MavicPro. Will be good to track one walking up. An unencumbered, beach. Not the forest. For the trees. Oh well.
    Unfortunately it does not seem to have the adjustability of the camera and its selections thereof. Log-D, etc. It's simple box camera settings. But maybe in a later firmware/software upgrade? And because that's already 4K, 60 FPS. When everyone else is just 30 or 24. And what about slow motion? 60, 120, 240 frames per second? I forget? And 100 Mb per second or just 40 like the MavicPro? Or is that megabytes? My brain is freezing up at 64. It don't work, no more. DUH. Ugh.
    I admit it. I've got dementia. I don't yet have my MavicPro. Not expected to arrive until January 22. I'm flying it in my dreams. I'm senile. I'm over the hill and under the covers. Sitting in my rock 'n' roll chair. And waiting for the next quad copter in the mail. To pick me up. Not sure that it can? Even though I have lost 75 pounds the past 2 years. Yes. I am that senile and filled with dementia and elusive nations. I actually think I'm writing something here. Because the astrophysicists have all said we are just a hologram. So I guess this is heaven? And our little drones fly around above our heads like little halos. Yeah doggy! I miss my kitty. Where's my kitty? She died years ago. And I've got to go find her with my drone.
    Senility is great! It's like meeting somebody new every time you meet them. I've got 500 friends! But maybe it's only 5? I wouldn't know. I'm not here.

      @@LoisoPondohva The camera is better by numbers. If you know anything about optics and cameras you'll realize that the sensor is subpar, the lense is subpar. This means that anyone that knows anything can get MUCH better picture for the DJI because you're able to actually get more information from the sensor. The gimbal movement on the skydio is also a joke if you want any quality. They overcome this by making the drone automatically do huge sweeping shots, which isnt desirable for anyone trying to do anything decent, or remain in control..

    My disdain for DJI's customer service is why I began repairing drones in the first place.

    The Skydio 2 is an awesome product, no debate there.

      Obstacle avoidance on the front was on, but the sides were turned off when flying at faster speeds. I was tracking a fast moving subject, so I needed the extra speed.

    This type of flying in Canada would be considered reckless and you would exposed yourself to hefty fines.

    Hi Billy thanks for the video. With the sensors turned off in the fast active track on the Mavic it's obvious in that environment it would hit obstacles. Not sure what the purpose of the comparison is knowing one drone will have sensors off and one drone will have them on. You don't even need to fly them knowing what the result will be.

    While I continue to be amazed at the alien-tech-level obstacle avoidance on the Skydio, I'm with Lon Dinard. Why did you put the Mavic 2 Pro into fast mode and turn off all obstacle avoidance? That's not the way any sane person would use it unless they were in a wide open area. This "test" only shows what you've already shown - that the Skydio has great obstacle avoidance. It doesn't show how well the Mavic 2 does. I'd love to see you do a real world test where people would leave it on slow mode. Travel around at a reasonable speed for a while and see how it does. Then crank up your speed and see how long the Mavic will track you before switching to fast mode. At that point, end the test. It's just stupid to continue on and fly into obstacles that you KNOW it's going to fly into because there is no obstacle avoidance.

    • @uptowndisco2
      @uptowndisco2 Před 4 lety +2

      The mavic 2 will track in safe mode up to 12 M/s or about 27 mph , in fast mode it turns of all side and top sensors and can track above 27 mph with the caveat that it turns off all sensors above 27 mph to enable faster flight .

      I agree, it wasn't really a fair test, but ive used active track on a Mavic 2 for awhile now and there is absolutely zero chance I would let it loose in the type of environment the Skydio was doing here with relative ease. • @shont2006
      @shont2006 Před 4 lety +2

      I agree with you. The swinging Skydio drone footage was off-putting and certainly drew attention away from the subject of the video (Billy). Even on the straight paths...the drone continued to move from side to side and up and down without reason. Yes, it didn't hit anything...but the camera wont hold still on the subject for more than a second and wont stay where you want it to stay!
      The Skydio drone's ability to avoid obstacles is certainly a fascinating technical achievement, but this drone is lacking in the cinematography area.

The Skydio might have it's limitations but there's no comparison when it comes to this type of performance. I'm sure sorry you felt it a nuisance that it had to calculate it's position as it successfully avoided trees while Billy boarded ahead on the cartpath. On the blues and contrast. The little footage in the Mavic 2 Pro that was seen was way better. I want to get the Skydio 2 but what I want to use it for the quality might not be there. Mavic 2 Pro really needs to step up their game, nothing new really since 2016 for tracking and obstacle avoidance. And the Mavic Mini was a huge disappointment. I’m sure they are not selling a lot of units. Without obstacle avoidance at all any newbie will crash it easily. It’s like DJI is going backwards not ahead of the game.
    Want to see more completion. I love my Mavic 2 Pro, My P4P and all the rest I have with them. @Lon Denard The Mavic Mini doesn’t include an obstacle avoidance system. It also doesn’t have DJI’s object tracking, gesture recognition, and auto-follow modes - all of which are computation intensive tasks that not only require a faster processor with more robust cooling.
      Other features make compromises to reduce the price. The Mavic Mini doesn’t have a 4K camera on its nose, and instead boasts a maximum video resolution of 2.7K. And you won’t find DJI’s proprietary Ocusync or Lightbridge transmission technologies. The drone instead flies using a cheaper and slightly-less-reliable Wi-Fi-based system that makes the drone susceptible to interference.

      @Lon Denard One more thing you're abusive to Billy and others. we areal entitled to our opinion. Billy is correct about the OA on the Mavic 2 Pro. It's a drone dude, a flying camera if there is something better than that's okay. If you do not like other opinions then so be art. You are not the only one with an opinion. You may like some things and others might like other things too. Not everyone has to like what you like. Time for some maturity Lon.

    Looks like the drone gets really close to cars isn't that breaking the law of flying over people

      I believe the law is that you can not fly over crowds of people. Also, they were inside a car, equivalent to being inside a house. If that really way the law, that could mean that the only place one could fly would be a field or Forrest, never over homes or over cars.

    Love the skate board and the avoidance ability of the Skydio 2. Only down side I see is the S2 price. Did you do a price comparo? I don't see it anywhere.
