In this episode Mooch uses his DCS sim to attempt a risky low-level, high-speed strike against a Syrian chemical weapons site just outside of Homs. The episode starts with a full mission brief, just like those conducted by carrier aviators in the fleet. Over the course of the flight, Mooch reviews the details of both F-14B cockpits (pilot and radar intercept officer) as well as inflight refueling and Case III landing procedures.

You know what Chiropractors say, "well, there's your back problem: your wallet's too thick!"
      "Really?"
"Yes, but don't worry. I recommend a course of several appointments with me...and by the end of it, your wallet is guaranteed to be much thinner!"

Great Job! Hit them targets so accurately, made a nice air to air kill and get away, gotta say, that was a text-book landing! at dusk even.. little past perhaps, not much light at all but the landing deck lights. Hit number 1 wire if i heard correctly. Came in at that sweet spot trajectory and speed. Nicely Done! Thanks for the Video Ward! Always enjoy your content!

@@WardCarroll what would be really cool would be to have tripple double, 2 drivers, 2 RIOs, in 2 tomcats, for the full wingman experience of understanding how a pair of birds would work in a mission, but that is a lot of logistics to get everything set up right, even if doing it over the net vs LANing, but a boy can dream yes? 😅

TO WARD: I am a subscriber who follows your channel for the news stories, which I like very much. I was surprised to see this DCS (Sim) video by you. But, I was pleasantly surprised! I enjoyed it to the very end. I am not a DCS player, and have not seen any other sim briefing like yours. I enjoyed the briefing especially, and I like how you narrated each step of the way, with your mentions of what you were looking for (symbology) and switch settings, and more. All of it helped me understand the role you and the aviators play on a mission such as this. The DCS realism (cockpit views and more) adds to it. But, I really did like the briefing first, as it gave a sense of the mission. I have a few questions, but i will ask in another comment. Thanks for providing this entertainment, but also informative (shows us some of the thinking before and during the mission) video. Well done!

30:45 This video brings me full circle. I was a PC with VF-41 board the USS Nimitz 78-81. Preflight inspection then sending my plane off, returning and post flight inspection, I would see calafax popped and heavy g's on G meeter. Now I know how all that could have happened. I appreciate your time putting into this demo and filling in the gap. Seeing this from a real navy pilot and explaining in detail is really top notch. Thanks again.

When I get into the air in a sim, I sometimes pretend that I have to survive for my family who's waiting for me back home. You've topped me, man. I felt quite embarrassed for sitting through that pre-flight brief wearing just shorts and a t-shirt.
Jokes aside, great video! :) And I really loved the briefing. A little glimpse of what it is like (more or less) in real life.

Same problem - Chiro told me to take my current wallet out of the back pocket on medium / long cager trips (I'm also a motorcyclist). I have continued to go see Chiro for twice a week to get my back stretched out and I have exercises to do at home (I'm not always perfect on doing them, but I try). In my case - herniated disc at L5 , making back muscles at L1, L2 and L3 really tight trying to keep me upright (also have long body / short legs for height).

Thanks for the Inside the Ready Room look. Since I listened to the brief, EACH STEP of the flight was already "laid out in my mind" as you flew the mission. Flow of navigation. Sequence of Events. And when boogies show up it is not unexpected and from the direction briefed. You flew it the way you planned and briefed it. Really cool for a real world pilot who is an armchair wished I had been a military pilot.

  • @numberyellow
    @numberyellow Před 3 měsíci +3

This was really cool. There really is a difference between watching a DCS video from a normal player, and watching a DCS video from someone who was actually professionally acquainted with the bird featured in the video. Especially in the back seat, you were really comfortable, and knew right where everything was...no guessing, no fumbling, just get it done (which makes sense, given you were a RIO). I love that sort of thing. The pre-flight briefing was also a nice touch...provided context. A lot of other DCS videos are just, while already on the way to the target "ok, so we're flying the [insert plane name here], and we're on our way to blow up [insert target here]". You took the time to explain, in detail, what the objectives were, how they were to be achieved, and contingencies. really good stuff.
    Keep 'em coming Mooch.

I watch 5 or 10 minutes of AI news or lighter content, fix myself something to eat, and buckle in for that must watch episode.

We were plane guard for USS Inderpendence. My kids have asked me what planes were in my photos. Told them F-14s. The highlight of that trip in 97 was watching 2 xF-14s come from 40,000ft down to 100ft off the deck at full burner and hit old Hobart with a sonic boom. I pity the sailors that were in the aft heads at time. Gave you a whole new meaning of shitting yourself.

OK - after the fact: Great mission. I fly in P3D v5. A2A aircraft mostly. Most badass is the Civ P-51. Great way to get around. Most fun is the P-40B (very early version of that classic aircraft). I do watch a lot of DCS on CZcams. Growling Sidewinder, etc. I can tell that you have been there, done that, and definitely have the tee-shirt. Keep on rockin' in a free world. Thank you for posting!
One day, back in 1952 or so, my cousin JoAnne and I were walking along the San Francisco beach, on the raised path between the Great Highway and the actual sand of the beach. We were kids. Unsupervised. I saw two dots out over the ocean. They became Grumman Panther jets. They spotted us. Oh man - they flew over us, so low - it was great! My cousin hit the deck, but I just stood there, totally transfixed. It was SO COOL! And loud! Later, I figured that they must have been sent from the carrier to NAS Alameda. I still remember it, really well. They were probably coming back from the Korean War.

Ward, you are incredible. Briefing, flight, everything. It's bang on super-realistic and I love every nanosecond of it.
You make me feel like I'm there. THIS is how things like this should go. If I were making a movie I'd hire you as my consultant, you're VERY good at this.
One question: What's the difference between this style of attack and a good, old fashioned, dive-bombing run from WW2? Aside from the smarter weapons that is.

While I deeply appreciate all if the serious, factual videos that you do which helps me still better informed about my world, I do also like these occasional forays into something fun. Many thanks for both types.

Hey Mooch. This is some highly informative stuff
I hope you give the F-4E a swing when that releases. I wonder how you'll handle a platform you're not familiar with

That comfort feeling when Ward goes back to the RIOs station and actually knows what’s he’s doing (not like me) 😂

Great Briefing, Great Performance, Cool Mission! 👍🏽 Mooch, you can save 1 Sparrow, but, of course, 2 launches were more reliable in this situation. 😄
I guess there were a little high touchdown speed (around 160 kts) and vertical (around 1000 f/m). But if Jester hadn’t comments, then everything was fine 😂
P.S. Sometimes Jester comments the trap on the 1 wire!

Sick brief/ mission Mr. Carroll! There were some rumors flying around that you were working with someone to develop a DCS Tomcat campaign, any truth to that?

Great little mission and excellent briefing. Any chance we could get the mission file to try and fly it ourselves?

Great video! It would be awesome If you could create your own campaign with a DCS collaborator, and then provide the briefings and mission play trough this way.

Ward, appreciate you and the great quality stuff, in depth interviews, etc... would it make sense to launch the DCS sim stuff on another channel, like Rick does w Beato 2?
Keep up the great quality, work!

No. Content like this is fundamental to this channel. Not a game, a training aid. If you’re interested in the F-14, there’s no better way to understand the details.

Hello Ward from the son of a VF-102 maintainer (Phantoms)! I have seriously gotten into DCS after thousands of hours in MSFS and I'm very much digging into the RIO/WSO roles for the Tomcat and now the Phantom. Do you have any videos that focus on being the best backseater possible in DCS? Do you, have you, or would you consider giving one-on-one instruction? I think there would be a tremendous amount to learn from you, especially in combining all the different skill sets required by a RIO into a functional workflow while reading the tea leaves. Regardless, thanks for all the great content!

Jester (in a reproachful tone): “We’re really fast…570…”
Mooch (in a disgusted tone): “Yeah, I’m trying to run away Jester…”
Love it, giving your AI RIO a dose…
Would have been even better if you’d said “I’m trying to prevent the bad guys from being able to say ‘Jester’s Dead, Yee Haw!!”
    Nice work Mooch

Way too cool! I know you're a Tomcat pilot; however, can you complete another DCS mission in a legacy or super hornet perhaps?
