  • Why is Silksong Taking So Long?
Hollow Knight Silksong is a full fledged sequel to the original but it also features a completely different character that appeared in the first game, the hornet. Sure, Silksong has been in development in some form since 2017, when the team released Hollow Knight but there is just such a minuscule amount of concrete information about the game. Just looking at their website blog, the last official post was back in 2019, which was before the pandemic.
The game features a completely new world to explore with all new game mechanics thanks to a new character. Silksong also features crafting in some variety, as well as quests that will have you with hunting down rare beasts, ancient mysteries, and lost treasures. Once you finish the game, you will unlock a new mode called Silk Soul mode that puts a spin on the game with unique and challenging experiences according to their official description. At around 30-40 hours to complete the original, having a new game plus mode that drastically changes the mechanics of the game would provide deep value.
What most people forget is that Team Cherry, the South Australian developers behind Hollow Knight, who have only created one game so far are only a handful of people. At the start of the development the team was only three people and some other sources indicate that the team might be four now. With everything we know about the size and scope of SilkSong, there is good chance it doesn’t release in 2022.

Ha. I think I have heard of Hollow Knight, but in all seriousness I just go by what Team Cherry says. On their website and on the Silksong trailer at 1:57 they say “second game by Team Cherry”. I assume since the previous projects weren’t really full games and we part of game jams they don’t count them themselves. Thanks for checking out the video

Answer: it's not. It's been like 3 years. Anybody who thinks silksong is taking too long doesn't understand how hard and time consuming game design is, especially with only a small handful of devs.

    • @lunarsystem101
      @lunarsystem101 Před 2 lety +445

First off: it’s been 4 years
Second off: the game was at least partially done when it was shown off, particularly considering that the only substantial update on the game, which was released 3 years ago, said that they’d already exceeded their estimate on how many enemies would be in the game.
Third off: nothing is stopping them from hiring help for their new game.
Fourth off: game development is hard, but not all consuming. At the rate they are clearly working, considering their lack of communication, you’d expect the game to be out sooner.
Fifth off: silk song fans don’t even want the game to be out now(not that we’d mind), we just want news, or a development update, or a release date, or any kind of confirmation that the game isn’t stuck in development hell, or to be told it’s in development hell if it is.
Edit: I’m not sure why everyone is responding to me… I’m not the only person making these points… but ok. Again, the biggest problem is lack of communication. It’s one thing to delay a game repeatedly. It’s another to never give a deadline and go radio silent for years.

It's not unreasonable to start to be irritated about a game that has admittedly been in development since 2017 and announced officially in 2019...that's 5 years in development and over 3 since it was announced...maybe they need to stop trying to make it so ridiculously big that it just keeps prolonging it. Eventually you have to settle on the world design and finish it...you could conceivably add on infinitely at this rate. Sorry but it's starting to be a bit ridiculous, and truthfully I lost all hype over it over a year ago. There is a such thing as prolonging something TOO long. Ska studios released salt and sacrifice in a 5 year time frame, and that's ONE person working on it....team cherry is what 3-5 people. There's no excuse for a 2D metroidvania to take that long to develop. Team cherry is like three guys. Anyone that expects them to put out a game of this size and quality quickly is crazy. I respect them for now going and getting a bunch of nobodies to work on it too. They no good things take hard work and a lot of time. I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait

Not only is team cherry a small group of Devs but with what we see in hollow Knight and in trailers for silksong, the game is going to be filed with absolutely stunning artwork which in itself takes a lot of time + the animating of said arc and implementation into gameplay. Hollow Knight was filled with little details and amazing story and background lore which most likely means they're going to try and do the same within silksong and improve upon it too. With covid most likely hindering development and many other things that can come up especially with the small team will delay the development time.
I'm glad they haven't given us and definitive release dates this far allowing them to put as much time and effort they can into perfecting and finalising the game without the constraint of a release date, we did get a release window but it seems to have been an estimate and most likely incorrect. I think we'll get a date when the team believes the game is finished which is the best time for them to do so, as much as I'm impatient and want it to come out soon I am willing to wait if it means silksong will be as good as they want to make it.

It’s very smart to not give release dates, however frustrating it is for the fanbase, because release dates put pressure on a team and can cause them to cut corners to get it out on time. Delaying a game beyond the intended release date will also harm fanbase morale.

It should be taken as a positive thing that Silksong is taking a while to be published as Team Cherry wants to have it in high quality and polished. And if they rushed it, it would turn out pretty bad and won't meet to everyone's expectations.

To everyone saying they revealed it too early, please bear in mind that Hollow Knight was originally supposed to have a separate Hornet campaign, and that campaign grew in scope so much that Team Cherry decided to make it a sequel instead. If they hadn't revealed Silksong we'd have Kickstarter backers frothing over Team Cherry not releasing the promised Hornet campaign, so they were caught between a rock and a hard place. When the choice is between hyping people too early or disappointing them and crushing your brand's reputation, the choice is obvious.

Yea it's crazy how much the scope of the project grew. I'm confident it will be as amazing as HK was but it's hard not to be anxious when it comes to getting just pure radio silence from the devs.

I’m genuinely worried for Team Cherry’s mental health at the release of Silksong. All of us as a community have such high expectations and have laid the pressure on thick. 6-7 years is incredible time for only 3 developers to be in the final stages of making a game. I just hope that people will be kind to them, and realize the expectations every one of us has probably isn’t realistic. Regardless, I look forward to Silksong even if it isn’t as big as we hope. I’ve spent hundreds of hours on Hollow Knight, as have a lot of other people, so I would be happy with just another DLC, let alone a game.
Anyways just my opinion on things. Great video, I did not know that they said they only have one game, made me chuckle. Hope you have a great day 😊

I think its a good thing they're taking their time instead of rushing. Look at Elden Ring. From Software actually took time and made a finished game that has so much to do instead of just rushing out an unfinished game like call of duty does and like battlefront 2042 was.
