Slashing Grace works on slashing Light or One-Handed Melee Weapons.
*Fencing Grace* is the one that works on piercing Light or One-Handed Melee Weapons.
However, Rapier is only 1d6. A Estoc is 2d4 and thus the superior option, as both have 18-20/x2
Thanks. I forgot completely about the Estoc and great that you clarify the differences for the dex feats.
It was a lot of information to pack into a small video so missed to clarify that.
Isn't the estoc two-handed?
An estoc is a sword about as long as a bastard sword, but designed exclusively for thrusting attacks. Its “blade” is a steel spike with a triangular, square, or hexagonal cross-section. Like the bastard sword, an estoc requires special training to use it one handed, but it can also be wielded as a two-handed martial weapon.
When you wield an estoc with one hand, treat it as a one-handed weapon; when you wield an estoc with two hands, treat it as a two-handed weapon. If you can use the estoc proficiently with one hand, you can also use the Weapon Finesse feat to apply your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on attack rolls when wielding an estoc sized for you with one or two hands, even though it isn’t a light weapon.
Can you use an Estoc as a two handed weapon in this game?
Looks like you can't. or at least I don't know how :(
This was a really great and informative guide for a very confusing game. Thank you and I hope you might think of doing some more for other classes.
I'm glad that you enjoyed the guide :)
I'm planning to make one for every class. But it takes a lot of time to make them. 2-3 guides a week is the plan right now.
I have already created one for the alchemist and I have started compiling information for the inquisitor guide.
Thank you this makes things so much easier
AWESOME VIDEO!! Very easy to understand and informative about the magus class.
I'm glad that you like it. :)
I must say, I've watched quite a few guides on this game now and I think yours are the better ones. I was struggling with what to pick and with your help I decided to go with Eldrich Archer. The best part about the videos is the comment section and the community around your channel. Keep up the good work man. By the way, do you think you can include a few minutes of combat footage with the class to see it in action? That would be pretty cool too.
Great to hear that you enjoy the videos.
Seance that shows abilities and stuff from combat.
Would take a long time to add.
Building characters and there is no good respect option in game.
Have characters at a level where i can show interesting things.
Pick what to show and not to.
Record it
And edit it.
It takes me a few hours already to make videos like this.
More then 1 hour research. I think i spent 3 for one of the videos
Then 0.5-1 hour recording.
Then 1-4 hours editing.
Rendering of 1 hour where i can't use my computer or at least not a lot.
Then 0.5 hours youtobe/steam and other stuff like that.
Thanks for the suggestion and I hope that you can understand why I'm not going to add it.
If someone created a video of each ability and sent it to me or if the game hade a test build option arena thing I would probably add it. Will see if i can make them more visually appealing in a different way.
If you have any other suggestions live them in the comment's and i will see if i can implement them.
Personally think eldritch scion dragon blood line works better then vanilla magus. Being able to spam shock touch and the extra AC early is huge. Also dragons.
It's a preference thing. I think most people like the spontaneous casting from it more then the normal casting.
Scion is bad for shapeshifting into dragon, you can only get level 1 dragon because you can only cast level 6 sorcerer spells. You also get it a bit late as a scion so if you are into dragons, go for a sorcerer build, that way you will be a dragon at level 13.
True if you really wanna use Dragon form it is quite limiting where you don't get it till 16 and it's not as good as just wearing heavy armor for most cases unless you go for a dex heavy build. personally, i'm not sure why they even have dragon form II and III in there. You can call it a drawback but it just seems like lazy copy paste design for the bloodline.
It's a preference thing though at the end of the day. electric dragons give a nice boost to early game damage and +1 ac is +1 ac. On harder difficutlies those extra eeks are nice since later feat/spell synergies will come anyways.
Thanks mate! This guide helped me out more then you know. Trying to build a str magus and been pulling my hair out figuring out how to do so with race and feats.
I'm Glad i could help you.
Glad to see you back!
I'll have to start playing this now
:)
Whatever you do, melee combatants (Magus or otherwise) should focus on having around 23+ AC near level 4-5, or otherwise should avoid melee. Just my opinion. My point is if you do a Magus that fights in melee, make sure they have decent AC (high dex plus light armor, Mage Armor, other bonuses). I lack experience with Magus though.
Ac or defensive spells are extremely important on all melee classes.
3 years late to the party, but imo AC feats are not that great for a Magus. AC on a low AC char is going to increase your chance to avoid damage from like 50 to 70%, but the attacks that land will still nuke your Magus. AC on a high AC char is nice, because it can mean you are almost immune to getting hit and every % closer to 100 is worth more than previous %. For low AC chars in Melee Blur, Mirror Image, Invis, Stoneskin and Elemental Prot are the way to go. Always have a support dedicated to apply those buffs to your Melee builds and have a Caster (Sorc, Wizard) that can throw out some of these as well when shit hits the fan.
@@WizoIstGott I actually agree Feats for the Magus should not focus on AC, but on what helps do damage and benefits the attack spells they use. Still, I make sure all my characters have at least 23 AC early on, but without Feats (hence the rather low number 23 by PF standards). The Magus should basically let a tanky character get the attention, and then strike fast and hard.
Wow! This was sooo informative, thx alot!
I dislike the lack of Intensify metamagic in Kingmaker
What weapon would you recommend for a strength-based Eldritch Scion build? I was thinking longsword, but any recommendations would be welcome.
BTW, awesome video! As someone who has never played Pathfinder you explained the Magus incredibly well!
Glad to hear that you think that. it's one of my favorite classes.
Estoc if you have an extra feat. 2d4 damage 2d8 and it can be 2 handed for 1.5 Str damage.
Scimitar 1d6 damage and 18-20 crit can also be 2 handed for 1.5 str damage.
You want a weapon with the best crit chance and that's 1 handed .
Awesome, thanks! Also, would you say that STR is the winner as opposed to a DEX Magus?
I wonder what is the point of the Sorcerers, if you can make a spontaneous casting Magus that also uses Charisma ?
magus has 6 level spells, sorcerer has 9 levels.
Ah ! Thank you for the answer.
Shame they didn't add Bladebound. It's my favorite archetype.
That could be interesting.
so the Scion is charisma base? ugh that means I got to start over cause I screwed up then cause he only has like 14 charisma
on a side note in my opinion this game is pretty good though there will be others who disagree
Great to hear that you like the game. :)
And yes it's cha based. So you better restart
I like the game personally. Eld Scion is my favorite class so far. I love spontaneous caster builds so Sorc or Eld Scion are nice; I might try that Inquisitor class some day though. DId you stick with your Eldritch Scion? How high did you get them?
if you do eldritch scion you will get much mileage out of an electric dragon, you can use shocking grasp like crazy thru melee, also you can apply metamagic to have it available in more spell slots
:)
How would the undead bloodline work with eldritch scorn?
Excellent guide ! We feel that you work on the subject. Just a question, is eldricht scion with high dex in place of high strong is viable ?
And do you think that it's a good idea to multiclassing eldricht scion with another class or it's better to avoid ?
magus are best with only one class most of the time. 1 level rogue can be good for dex magus.
I think they can be good dex characters. But you get dex to damage at level 3 as the earliest. or level 2 if you start as a rogue or fighter. Or starts as human.
Thank for your answer. And do you think that it's better for eldricht scion to have light or heavy armor ? I suppose it depend if they have a might or dex build.
Arcane spall failure and it depends on dex.
How come I don't have this CHOOSE SPELL window for adding spells? All i have is a book with 18 spells and memorizing them does nothing. I am a cleric btw. Can anyone explain in detail or create a video. So many of them out there are just on how to create a character, but not how to memorize or add spells.
Make sure you get a full rest after "memorizing" your spells whenever you select them, because when you change or add "memorized" spells you lose the prepared slot and need to rest to replenish the spell slot for the associated spell. I hope this helped
Clerics dont get to learn any spell. They automatically learn everything, you just have to choose which spell to memorize.
After changing your spellbook you will have to rest until your ability score is reset.
Dude exelent guide.
I started as an Sword Saint and a i want to go for Eldrich Knight. At what level u recomend me to multiclass?
I would not go Eldrich Knight at all. If you play to level 21 then take level in it.
I think the level cap in game is 20.
Are you going for 10 levels in Eldritch Knight for its level 10 FEAT? Or are you just trying to raise your BAB enough to get that extra Fourth attack a round? If it's the later, all you need is a BAB of +16 to get that fourth attack, which is a Sword Saint 16 and an Eldritch Knight 4 (16 SS gives you +12 BAB, the 4 in Eld Knight gives you +4 more BAB for a total of +16). NOTE: if you dip into Eld Knight, you will lose ONE level of spell progression, meaning you will finish as a Caster Level of 19 and NOT 20. Not that it will cripple you or anything, just to let you know.
By the way, if you go 10 Sword Saint and 10 Eldritch Knight, you would have a BAB of +17, not that different from the one I pointed out above. Question is: what would you be giving up in Sword Saint's levels 11- 16 if you want to take Eld Knight 10 and, would you be willing to give that up?
Hmm... I think that helped. Thanks!
Warning about that Sword Saint build:
Relying on only dexterity based ac is dangerous. Any condition that takes away dex-AC will rape you (flat-footed; not being first in initiative in the first round of combat, Blinded, Cowering, Helpless, Paralyzed, Pinned, Stunned AND all attacks from invisible/concealed enemies). Monks get special AC that's only taken away if immobilized. Rouges get uncanny dodge and improved uncanny dodge. If we were able to take uncanny dodge, dex-AC would be a lot stronger. But we can't, so it's not.
A dex-build would in the end get 2 more base to-hit and dmg at the loss of MASSIVE defensive capabilities. That's honestly not that great.
Hey I have another question. Not sure if you discussed this in your video. How do you know if your spell combat is actually working as intended using say shocking grasp?
you see your character attack with his sword and cast a spell in the same 6-second interval.
@@ZautosMC ahh okay. I guess I need to pause it a bit more, to see what's going on, because everything is going on at the same time. Thanks good luck with the channel.
Try this...if you cast your spell AND immediately attack with your weapon, it probably is working as intended. Just make sure you have the "right" toggle on before casting the spell, and make sure its a spell that you can focus through your weapon (melee touch attacks for most Magus builds, Ranged Touch Attacks also known as "rays" for the Eldritch Archer build ONLY).
Do you think dipping into one level of fighter to get weapon finesse early would be a good idea?
For anyone wondering that come across this comment.
As a general rule, Magus is incredibly good as a singleclass, so any multiclass choice has to be worth more than getting a feat early. Slowing down the Magus progression by even just 1 lvl is a huge delay, since your spellcasting, weapon enchants and magus arcana are so important. For Sword Saints, this is doubly so due to how awesome their features are.
The only option I can think off of the top of my head would be picking up Scaled Fist Monk for Eldritch Scion. Or a dip into Vivisectionist after getting your most important features.
What are your thoughts on multiclassing the magus with the duelist prestige?
I have not looked at it from in game. But from the pen and paper.
You lose caster level and that's never good.
Magai uses a lot of swift actions so you might not be able to parry a lot and i don't know if spell combat counts as a full attack for the purposes of parry.
Parry is the only thing that looks good with the class and it works well with spell combat.
So i would not recommend it.
why 14 str for archer?
You can get a composite longbow that adds your STR mod to your damage. So it gives you +2 damage with bows when you get a better one.
Also want to know this. Thanks!
@@ZautosMC ty
Just curious and probably a newbie question, but why not 10 points into Dragon Disciple and 7 in Magus instead?
You need eldritch scion to be able to play get DD and then you would lose all the magus stuff you would have gotten from 10 levels, extra magus. Then you would also need to be an Str build to use the extra Str that you get. you also lose caster levels
Why do you think it could be good?
Not to plug it in your CZcams Channel, but I have a Eldritch Dragon Disciple of Scion build on my channel Zautos. Its currently glitched (sure it will get patched in the upcoming patch) but it is still a FUN Strength-based build. The Glitch is that it lets you progress a Draconic Bloodline with each level of Dragon Disciple, which MAY be intentional. BUT, I started out as an Abyssal Bloodline Eldritch Scion, and when I dipped 7 levels into DD it made me pick a NEW Draconic Bloodline. I believe I got spells/abilities from BOTH Bloodlines. Oh, and I went Aasimar. So I was Half Demon/Half Dragon/Half Celestial/Half Human, which is funny to me. I had like 28 Strength I think by level 20.
Feel free to delete this post if you don't want me to mention my build/channel here. Its all good. Cheers!
This feels like the class has taken inspiration from Type Moon's Fate Stay Night, which is Amazing. New Fav Class
it's one of my favorite classes. I don't think that it was inspired by that. There has been weapon wielding sword fighters for a long time in fantasy.
@@ZautosMC It seems like it does at first glance.
And yet, it's probably the other way around
probably
It is very unlikely that the Fate/ series inspired Pathfinder's classes, as Pathfinder is directly spun off from Dungeons and Dragons, which greatly predates the Fate/ script's inception.
can i use bastard sword with magus ability
yes if you have the exotic weapon proficiency feat ta make it 1 handed. But it's a 19-20 crit weapon. So it will bd worse then a rapier
Is a Dual wielding Magus a possibility ? Or it doesn't work at all ?
I think it's possible, but not really recommended as if you're going for a magus who melees a lot, there is a special ability that gives you bonuses for having one of your hands free to where you can cast a touch spell on the same round as a melee strike with your weapon.
@@glasswolf2061 thanks for the answer.
Question is, do you really use that Touch Attack with your weapon attack enough to make it worth NOT going two weapon fighting? You could always switch weapon slots (make one a one handed, single weapon slot, and make another the dual wield option). I plan on using an actual Shield with my Magus after I use all his/her offensive spells or when I pre-buff up, switch to Sword and Board and then charge into combat.
hey im pretty noob for this type of games, im going magus archer, is it worth to get some points in ranger/rogues skills for better "normal" damage? thx for this guide
I think it's better to stay with magus. I have not looked into multiclassing in this game yet.
Multiclass rarely works well, especially for a game that only has 20 lvls. It effectively prevents the character from accessing 20th lvl abilities and skills from either class.
@@charlesw5919 true! But I would love to see some multi class vids because some lvl 20 abilities seem lack luster. And then some classes look pretty barren like the cleric class tree and wizzard for example!
@@coltonwatersmusic2319 That's certainly true; some lvl20 abilities are "meh!" You need to look at the progression abilities for your class as well; some of them only top off at 20. So it's a good idea to think it through and make sure whatever you are picking up by multiclassing is worth losing lvl20 abilities and max bonuses. I would also recommend looking at the prestige classes to see if you can spec your class for one of these before you multiclass.
@Colton Waters I always decide if the level 20 (or even 19) abilities are worth it and then try to see what I could get from a 1 or 2 level dip into another class. For instance, if you went Eldritch Archer, you COULD start out as a Paladin for 1 or 2 levels as a DIVINE Hunter (or whatever its called). You get a free FEAT you already need (precise shot at level 1), armor and shields to use for some early AC (just lose the higher level stuff as you start out with the Eldritch Archer or you will suffer Arcane Spell Failure until you "earn" it), a Smite ability (not sure if it works at range but worth checking out), and if you go all the way to level 2 Paladin, you get a Charisma-based bump to your Saving Throws. Even if Charisma was a dump stat for you, you might get that gear that pumps ALL your mental stats +8, which would help you Will saves a LOT.
which is best...scion or sword saint?
What is best waffles or stake. They do different things. So the best one changes depending on what you want to do.
Which ones the steak?
sword saint
Can i use estoc with dex?
Yes. It's better than a rapier. Just forgot to mention it in the video. But it's an Exotic weapon so everyone except the sword saint needs to spend a feat on it.
Ok, thx Zautos Gaming
Dude you didn't show all the Scion Bloodlines that are available =(
Edit: ok found from another source:
Abyssal
Arcane
Celestial
Draconic
Elemental
Fey
Infernal
Serpentine
Undead
I know that i did not show all of them. All of them are not good for magi.
Abyssal bloodline for example is good for summoning and magi are bad summers. I don't want to add a lot of information that would confuse people and make the video 3-5 minutes longer.
@@ZautosMC abyssal give you +2 str and transformation (+4/+4 on dex/str) so it's actually good for str base eldrich scion, but yes - most of the time you want dragon bloodline.
Uploading again? Lol
Looks like it.
Magus is the worst class in my opinion. They can't do anything. Very weak melee.
