    I worked at EA during that time and did a bit of work on this game. One fun fact was that the mission where Japan attacked with a giant robot was originally planned to be Mecha Godzilla but Toei Japan wanted too much for the rights so we couldn't put that easter egg in. The game was always about making it fun over balance and it was a highlight as one of my favorite games during that time there. It felt like the real emphasis was on the single player and multiplayer was there just to mess around with your friends and never to be taken seriously as competitive.

    Red Alert is such an interesting series:
    Red Alert 1was entirely serious, with a genuinely great portrayal of just WHY Stalin was so dangerous, with his mixture of personal charm and cold-blooded murder.
    Red Alert 2 mixed that seriousness together with camp, where terrible things (like nuking Chicago) are mixed together with parodies of Hollywood actors (which EA took out and replaced because they're cowards,) gunning down psychic soldiers in the streets.
    Red Alert 3 managed to break Tim Curry, and it will always be one of my favorite games for that, even if I'm not quite fast enough to appreciate the gameplay.

    • @DavidRichardson153
      @DavidRichardson153 Před 2 lety +46

      RA 1 was a decent testbed and starting point for the series, RA 2 was that perfect balance between serious and camp while rocking what I consider to be the most kickass soundtrack of all C&C games, and RA 3 was so bad and cheesy that if they had not gone all-in on it, it would have been a bad thing.
      RA 3 is not my favorite of the series (I think you can guess which one my favorite is), but I cannot help but like just how enjoyably bad it is (or is it badly enjoyable?). Frankly, if you can enjoy a bad movie that leans into the bad like D.E.B.S. (which I do - and I recommend watching it at least once), you are probably going to enjoy RA 3.

    I love how Bricky laughs so much about the changing of history through the elimination of Albert Einstein, but in the RA universe, it makes sense. In RA 1, Einstein himself travels back through time to kill Hitler before his rise to power. There was no WW 2 in the RA universe. Instead, the Soviets became too strong and ambitious, and the Allies had to fight them. Einstein realized his role and (IIRC) designed some weapons for the Allies. Allies victory is cannon in game one, Stalin died, and premier Romanov (yes, of the Tzar dynasty) was put in his place. By the time of RA 2, the Soviets are once again power hungry, and invade Europe once again. The US wants to nuke them, but that plan is thwarted through the help of a mind controlling person (Yuri). Then, once again, Einstein designs many weapons for the allies. Namely, the Prism tower, the Chronosphere and the Weater control device. Anything high tech the Allies have, Einstein made it. So, in RA universe, it makes sense that the death of Einstein before he could design such weapons would swing the balance of power in the Soviet favor, considering it was the prism towers that helped save the Pentagon, and that Chronosphere was used to teleport units into the Kremlin for the final victory.

    So I was quite literally a child when I first played Red Alert 2, and I still boot it up every few months. It's the only RTS I've consistently played and I play it extremely casually, exclusively in singleplayer, so I don't know how good it is from the perspective of someone that seriously plays RTS's, BUT, if your favorite part of Red Alert 3 is the over-the-top b-movie cheesiness, then I BEG you to try RA2:
    - The main overarching villain is a Russian mad scientist that specializes in mind control
    - His faction in the DLC is basically "The Horror B-Movie Army"
    - The acting and story is just as, if not more, cheesy
    - The soundtrack is an absolute banger, in fact I personally prefer most of the music in RA2 than in 3(At the very least, I recommend looking up the songs Power, Fortification, or Industrofunk)
    Also the tech upgrades and a lot of the special abilities were introduced in 3, 2 is a lot simpler. Usually if a troop has a secondary ability it's them switching to some areal denial mode, like GI's hunkering down or Desolaters nuking a small radius, or if they carry troops it's them offloading whoever their carrying(again, I'm super casual so sorry if there's other terms for that).

The Lighter and Softer camp elements add charm without completely derailing the game. The invasion of mainland USA scenario is as good as it gets. I'm not a good player myself when it comes to online multiplayer, so I like to play games against the AI, but such games quickly lack variety. But a campaign with its own peculiarities, sometimes limited technology, sometimes no base, or special conditions and events apart from destroying all enemy units and buildings and then doing it all with two people, yes, more of that, please. Yuri's revenge had a few more things in it and I feel really hit the balance in that regard well. You could still do your traditional "doom stacks" with 20 some prism tanks one shotting everything in existence, but you could just as easily do the same with 3 different unit combinations depending on the situation. It's biggest downfall was that without super weapons the games never end and with them games degrade into lobbing them at each other until one side fails to protect or rebuild from them fast enough.... or they got engineer rushed out of the gate. I think the simplicity of the harvesting and the generation of ressources is ment to shift the foxus of some gameplay elements. Harvester harass is strong in all kind of gasmes that have active ressources generation, however in RA3 the simplicity of gathering shifts your focus and purpose in the context of harvesting to defense. two or three anti air turrets in the right locations can defend very well against vindicators or twinblades, where a singe anti infatnry turret kills the soviet bots good enough.

    Having had Red Alert 3 and the expansion be the only classic-esque RTS that I have played through my childhood, I can attest that the shenaniganery in the game is of 2022's level of ridiculous humor and plot.

    I remember being around 9 or 10 playing this game on my Uncle's laptop when he came to stay with us. I had no idea what I was doing..... but I loved it. But since then I hadn't been on it, but I always knew it was Called Red alert 3..... that was until a few months ago and I saw on the Xbox Store (Yes I'm a console player), bought it and fell in love with it all over again, realising some of the missions can be quite difficult.
    I probably owe a lot to this game for the games that I'm into today, Halo 3 got me into FPS, Simpsons: Hit and Run got me into Third person games and Red Alert 3, got me into Stratagy games, leading me to Halo Wars, which I really like and kind of reminds me of Red Alert just in the Halo Universe.
    I saw your video on Kane's Wrath and had no idea about it, until you mentioned Red Alert 3, but I never expected to see a video on this game too. Just a shame we don't get games like this anymore, seeing actors just have fun with their roles and just watch the stupidity unravel, could definitely use more of that style of game these days.

      the Mental Omega mod for the yuris revenge expansion also got finished this year, it has 4 factions ( yes a completly new faction ) and exhilarating gameplay and storybuilding aswell as over 100 campaign missions and theres even a complete yuri campgain to play, it is very exiting aswell as complex and hard to learn( Recomend going into free play to test every faction and unit before starting campaign so you know what unit/building does what). But after those 20 years they finaly finished it, recomend it if ya loved RA2.

    You didn't even mention the Uprising expansion to the game, which added units so incredibly op to each faction that the game didn't even have multiplayer because it was way too op

    • @rjfaber1991
      @rjfaber1991 Před 2 lety +1

      I think that was mainly because it's horrendously unbalanced. Yes, Harbinger Gunships are réally OP, and Giga-Fortresses are as well to some point (though their insane price makes up for it somewhat), but in return the most 'OP' unit the Soviets get is the arguably quite nicely balanced Grinder. Mortar Cycles definitely make the Soviets in Uprising almost unbeatable when they rush, but they would lose out every time the game drags on a bit, with the Allies coming out as by far the best faction. Yes, Cryo Legionaires are a bit of a niche unit that's difficult to find a good use for, but Pacifier FAVs are arguably OP, FutureTanks X-1 are very OP if you use them right, and Harbinger Gunships are just the most OP unit in the game.

    • @JWQweqOPDH
      @JWQweqOPDH Před 2 lety

      @@rjfaber1991 I think the issue with Uprising balance isn't just what units were given to each faction, but what tiers they are at. Assuming nothing was tweaked with the existing units from the base game, adding something like the Reaper to tier 2 while almost everything else is tier 3, means that a tier 2 timing push from soviets might now be 10 times harder to stop than with the base game. Overall, the product design was at extremes. All changes from RA2 to RA3 were specifically to make an e-sport (more micro, more factions, etc), then after failing to meet their e-sport goals, they went 180 and made a single player game.

    I am from Germany and recently I was switching through TV channels when suddenly my heart skipped a beat and my jaw dropped: There it was, the famous and stellar Soviet March from Red Alert 3, one of the defining games of my childhood! And the funniest thing was: the song was played on a freaking carneval festival during a dance of a girl, where she performed her choreography to this song!
    I couldn't believe that I was hearing this masterpiece of a song on TV and then in this completely weird context. Apparently, EA sold the license to the CnC soundtracks to all kind of companies and societies around the world. This is apperently not too uncommon for old RTS soundtracks, because I still regularly hear some pieces of the classic soundtrack of Empire Earth and also Tiberium Wars 3 in some documentaries.
    Anyway, awesome video Bricky! Thx for giving some attention to these videogame gems and thx for mentioning the absolutely IMPECCABLE soundtrack of Red Alert 3. I still listen to the OST regularly.
