    This is a step-by-step instructional video on how to frame a basic window rough opening in a wall. I will be demonstrating and talking about how to do layout on wall plates and also assemble the jacks, cripples, Sill, Header, and king studs. Also, learn about rough opening “RO.” If you are new to construction or remodeling something at your own house, learning how to do this from a pro builder should speed you up and give you the confidence to do it right!

    i learned how to build houses at Los Angeles Trade Tech. This is how we were taught. Also Larry Haun the Zen Master of residential construction came and gave us some secrets to the trade. These guys in this video are spot on. It should be mandatory in order to graduate with a high school diploma to acquire basic knowledge on building houses and auto repair....MANDATORY!!!

    This HAS TO BE the BEST tutorial I've watched in the construction business. Definition of terms, visual demonstrations as well as discussion of why's and wherefor's is clear enough for anyone to understand. I'm an old lady rebuilding her own kitchen, with some carpentry experience but always refreshing my memory on structural requirements so I'm subscribing and will probably binge watch the rest of your videos just for fun :) Thanks guys!

    I love watching pros work, no matter what industry they're in. The efficiency, the confidence in what they're doing... It's impressive. My trade is metalwork these days, specifically gunsmithing, now that I'm retired from being a shooter... The way he glides around the job is exactly how I am in my shop, and how I was on the job before retirement. Keep up the good work. I came here because it's been a long time since I built a house, and my brother just enlisted me in remodeling his house. We both know how to do it, but he's the carpenter by trade... I'm the soldier. So I'm a bit rusty. I'll be framing windows on Thursday, so I better brush up on the lingo. I was trying forever trying to remember the names of the king studs until I remembered CZcams.

  • @timmaxey7841
    @timmaxey7841 Před 4 lety +24

    On window openings, take the number of studs interrupted and divide by 2. If you end up with a half you round up. That will give you the number of king studs required.

    Great production, clean. One thing to note: The jack studs holding any header should always in my mind be full bearing to the beam member its supporting. the window liner should butt into the jacks. Framing the liners full length of the beam (headers) you are creating a swell point and crush point as the wood grain is flat the way you have framed it on the bearing point above the post.
    When using 2x materials for headers, pack 1/2 plywood between 2 of the 3 pieces to gain the 5.5 inches for your exterior walls. Another note. 2x8 Headers should always have 4 nails connecting the king studs on the sides to prevent roll of the header off of the posts once loaded with the roof.

    In UK we use metric but in the old days of imperial we would stick to inches for things like framing.
    2ft 6ins x 4ft would be 30 x 48. It's unambiguous. whereas mixing ft and ins often can be taken two ways.

    Good well made straight to the point video's. As a 71 year young still learning carpenter, in my opinion their is to much lumber in walls. You mentioned a second king stud, I think this space would be better served with insulation. I believe the cripples next to the jacks could be removed and replaces with L-70 leaving more room for insulation. Headers are to big for most openings. Its easier framing with a bigger sized headers but less energy efficient. Just my opinion.

A lot of guys I come across say to slop the sill by 6 degrees, but that would complicate the flashing I'll be using in the end since I was planning on using the vinyl corners instead of flextape. I vastly prefer the idea of keeping everything straight and flush, but the outward slant definitely makes sense to me aswell.

    I am a total novice and these videos are extremely helpful. Quick question...on the first wall I built (making a chicken coop with 5 foot walls...I cut all the studs at 4'9", but when I went to frame it, some of the boards ended up being about 1/4" to 1/2" short (even though they were all the same size). What did I do wrong?

    Eric, after having framed a third house I've started to see fluctuating exterior door heights. I'm also tired of using 2x8 and filler material to make an old school door and window header. Do you guys typically use a 2x12 flush on each side of the wall with that 2x6 holding the two 2x12s? Or was that an LVL? I'm looking for ways to speed up the header process. I do like the insulated header idea especially since using a 2x12 or LVL will be plenty strong with one or two layers leaving a void in 2x6 walls. I assume you just use the canned minimal expansion foam? You'll have to give more details on that part in one of your videos as well! Appreciate you taking the time to frame properly. Flushing Kings with Jacks, marking a sill instead of eyeballing it, and keeping things tight. Not sure if you do it off camera but straightening the studs as you nail them is a big time killer that I end up doing. I mark the stud side of the plate when doing layout so I can twist (straighten) the stud to be perfect. Curious about your opinion on this.

    Great vid. On a non load bearing wall, would it be acceptable/common to raise the window height way up toward the 2 top sill plates rather than keeping the windows even with the top of the doors?

    Depending on the type of window trim , Ill use two sill plates for a nailer for the trim.

    Hey guys - I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your taking the time to teach us as you're busy actually building something. I have learned a lot so far and I expect that there is much more to learn in the future. I'm also going back and watching your older videos to pick up more lessons too. Anyway, just wanted to tell you - THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

      Yes,,,,I love making videos during our work, but I do not have the luxury of a crew working, so I cannot or do not have the time to do all of the instructions and presentations that Perkins do, really appreciate it

    I nail all studs,, put the jack and king stud together first before nailing it,,and install header first before nailing all the studs to the top plates,, so no need to be stepping and pushing the header in the jacks
