Blood, concrete, and dynamite: Building the Hoover Dam - Alex Gendler

- Dig into the engineering of the Hoover Dam, a concrete arch-gravity dam on the Colorado River that supplies water to the US southwest.
--
In the early 20th century, the US had expanded from coast to coast, but many cities in the southwest still lacked reliable water sources. The Colorado River's erratic flow and frequent floods made it unreliable for agriculture, and the region’s growing cities needed more energy. So the government decided to build a massive hydroelectric dam. Alex Gendler details the creation of the Hoover Dam.

I live in Boulder City and grew up here. It is a great place to live. I used to go down to the Hoover Dam on the AZ side late at night when no one was around and just stare at it in awe. Truly a remarkable feat of engineering. I couldn't imagine what it was like at the bottom of the canyon or hanging off the side of it in 120 degree weather with barely any safety equipment.
Are there any Coloradans dressed as legionaries with football gear fighting Californians dressed as WW1 doughboys with M16s?

Coincidentally, it was just a few days ago that I had a curiosity over dams. Like how do they stop the water before building.
Well, dam
Adish no joke, I was thinking the exact
Same thing
They close half the river, and build half the dam. Then they open the half of the dam built, to allow flow of water, and build the other side
@@getpriyanka I guess they build channels besides the river flowing away from it, and get collected somewhere else. So water gets diverted (as said in the video)

@@tomatocharro348 Its been one of the foundation beliefs of the Republican party in the last couple decades that money for projects should come from private investments (and of course the resulting profits) not the government. Lake Mead, the reservoir behind hoover dam, is in crisis right now with historically low water levels. The water is getting so low that the power turbines can't operate at full capacity, and may have to be cut off completely soon. Also, there's going to be cuts to water distribution starting Jan 2022.

Since the force of the water helps support the dam, how does the falling water levels impact the structural stability of the dam?
