  • Classic style modern indie games are a dime a dozen. Some of them are fantastic, some of them struggle. Where does Odallus: The Dark Call fit in, with its efforts to channel retro games like Castlevania, Ghosts & Goblins, and Demon's Crest? Let's find out!

    This game with thirty-two colours on screen would look amazing.

    I really dig how in-depth this review is. I wasn’t sure if this was a metroidvania so I appreciate you describing the gameplay loop. Big Ups! Liked and subbed.

      Thanks! I'm happy it could prove useful, and I hope if/when you check out some of my other videos, you find something else to enjoy!

    Odallus, in addition to all the obvious things going for it, has the right amount of (clearly intentional) jankiness to it that makes it really fun to play for me. Weird specific ways of using the sub-weapons to deal huge amounts of damage, the movement in general, etc make it a really fun game to speedrun. An early patch of the game even had a bug where you could equip the best sword after just picking up the first upgrade -- you just navigated to the empty slot where the 2nd upgrade would be and you could equip it. Made the Devils Peak boss a breeze to one-cycle.

    Also Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus and A Hole New World are two retro-pixelly games that I think are really overlooked!

    Excellent review. This game needed more polish. I started out loving it, but like you, found the cart as well as underwater sections really tedious. But as a sucker for this style of game I’m always glad when a new one pops up, and I still managed to get pretty far ahead before giving up. Perhaps I’ll give it another go.

    How is this game? Ive been eyeing it for awhile but didnt buy it yet. These indie games that come out on PC under the radar its hard to keep track and even know about them!

      If you like classic Castlevania, there's a good chance you'll enjoy this.

      @@LibraScope I thought this was more like a metroidvania than classic castlevania?

    • @LibraScope
      @LibraScope  Před 3 lety

      @@peterc504 Well, the levels offer multiple pathways to find, and upgrades which can sometimes allow you to explore more of other levels you've already completed. But they're still all compartmentalized into distinct levels. And there's none of the complex RPG stuff that you'd see in most of the Symphony of the Night style Castlevanias. Point being, it has some aspect from both types of Castlevania, but it's definitely more like the older games than the newer ones. Like I say in the video, I'd compare it more to something like MegaMan X in terms of exploration. A set of levels, and a set of upgrades you can find that allow you to return to old levels and explore more.
