- What's up guys! Welcome back to Creativity With Chris!
I've got another PTX video coming at you today on the Creative Channel! This is their Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and it was AMAZING! I haven't listened to this one in a while and I don't think I've seen the music video except for a couple times, or when it first came out. LOVED IT!! The post production made my heart happy haha. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and thanks for watching! :)
Here's the link to the original video:

A song with no words, sung by a band with no instruments = 2nd Grammy.
Both Avi and Kirstie said that this video was their favorite to do. Kirstie loved the make up, Avi said that he was done filming in 10 minutes.
This piece really shows off Avi's operatic training as a basso profundo, Opera/Classical was his major in college, with a Theory/Arranging minor, and he'd been offered a position with the Los Angeles Opera when Ben Bram and Scott approached him to join PTX for The Sing Off. He chose to take the risk with PTX and ended up staying with them for 6 years, helping them to reach the heights they've achieved. He's now a solo artist and just released a new song a few weeks ago - "First Place I Go", which you should do a reaction to. BTW, word is that it was Avi who brought "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" to PTX, and Ben Bram assisted in arranging what ended up winning them their 2nd Grammy.
Love it! And I agree! You can definitely hear Avi's background come through in this one :)
And even though Avi isn't an actual basso profundo, he still is an amazing operatic bass with great tone and projection
@@azeemsyed8550 Do you classify him as a Baritone?
He has a nice 5+ octave range and handles all of them well.
@@pamscarr8696 Nah he's definitely a bass, just not a profundo. Those guys are next level in terms of depth and volume. Avi is a bass with a nice range
@@azeemsyed8550 nah hes a basso profundo and hes proven it time and time again.
It's not a Christmas song but I'd really like to see your reaction to their version of Gold (Kiiara Cover) It really showcases Mitch's crazy control, the group's ability to blend, and some crazy syncopated rhythms.
Yes! I think it’s one of their most underrated, but most impressive remakes.
I love the simple structure of the video. If you look closely, there is always only the artist in the picture who is singing. And then connecting the key frames to the fade of the melody...minimal effort, maximum effect. Similar to the Daft Point Medley. I bow in awe to the person who came up with the idea for these videos...
Congrats! You have officially been "Mitch slapped"! This is from the Nutcracker Suite. Won a Grammy.
As Heidi says.....2nd Grammy. It was 60th ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS (2015)
BEST ARRANGEMENT, INSTRUMENTAL OR A CAPPELLA
Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy
You can't do an Acapella cover of a song without words!
PENTATONIX:
" HOLD MY BEER!"
RIGHT! Haha
If you really want to get Mitch slapped 😂 react to their Ahha Singapore live … it was recorded on a fan phone and Avi’s low note messed the speakers… Mitch went wild too 😂🤣
search for Pentatonix Aha Star Vista
Got Mitch slapped again! Great reaction! 😁😁😎
Thanks for watching!
Great reaction. Your facial expressions cracked me up. A good one to Check out would be Pentatonix "Carol of the Bells "( Christmas under the Stars). Don't think Mitch takes a breath in this one lol
I have it on my remainder Christmas schedule! ;) Coming soon!!
Great reaction! I love this. I’d love to hear your thoughts on their cover of “Silent Night” - the official video is live, it’s so good
I'll have to see if I can squeeze it in somewhere. I have the remainder of the Christmas season lined up, but we'll see :)
@@creativecrewfam , it would be absolutely worth it, live and off mic yet good enough to be their official video for this song. And Avi Kaplan was amazing.
@@susanpeterson9947 Indeed Avi was amazing.
I still cannot listen to them without him.
@@pamscarr8696 yeah the old Matt was pretty awesome too
@@kattrina42 mean girl huh are you?
love this one! you mentioned bohemian rhapsody, have you see pentatonix do bohemian rhapsody? they said for years they didn't want to cover it if they couldn't do it justice and well... they definitely made a show of it once they did
I'll have to check it out!
@@creativecrewfam I hope that you will check out Bohemian Rhapsody. It's incredible. When it was released, Brian May, of Queen, posted a link to the Pentatonix video on his social media with a message to enjoy. That was pretty cool of him.
Okay you should also look at what they have created on their own. All extremely different.
Kevin Olusola (his channel is KO) has "Down" and "Renegade" and goes on from there.
Kirstin had her own E.P. about 4 years ago just under her first name only. "All Night", "Break A Little", "Bad Weather" and "Naked".
Mitch last August released one under the name Messer "Roses", "Angels Pray", "Machine", "Boy in the Picture", "Gasoline Tears".
Avi Kaplan has the most content of course alot done after he left Pentatonix and took a couple of years off to get over touring burnout. "Change On the Rise" is his most popular and very dramatic released in 2019 used on the tv show Resident Alien and as the theme music for a weekly podcast, Relative Unknown. "Chains" is another that has turned up on program The Blacklist.
His newest, "First Place I Go" is shaping up as another as popular as "Change On the Rise".
If you love Broadway, you should check out their performance of "What is This Feeling" from the tribute to Wicked.
These guys can do just about anything.
And yes, I believe the floating heads was a tribute to Queen.😊
What I appreciate about PTX is that they do versions of Christmas songs that have become tiresome in such a way that they are interesting again.
Yes!
No wonder they won their second Grammy for this performance, huh? Just spectacular!
They actually did Bohemian Rhapsody, too.
Hahaha loved how you threw something with that note lol.
Avi's scary bass is known as "bass face" used to accurately form those very low notes. You can see Tim Foust, for example, do the same thing. Neither one bother with the technique of subharmonics (play Geoff Castellucci's post on how to sing really low) because they are natural bass singers with a worldwide reputation because of their scarcity outside of opera or, in the USA, gospel singing. Maybe at most the growl (called firebreathing in the E.U.) technique for a couple of the lowest notes. Avi used it in Natural Disaster to get low enough (F#1 I think) to interfere with the lighting on stage as a dramatic effect.
Baritones singing down to bass like Scott Hoying or Matt Sallee in Pentatonix or Chris Rupp and Adam Chance in Homefree all use the techniques Geoff describes. Tim and Avi, on the other hand, have blown venue speakers accidentally just with their voices. So it is a scary thing as you said.
Wow! Thank you for the technical information regarding the matter
Avi's low not freaks me out. His stare is so penetrating.
Love love LOVE it!
So excited to see your reaction to this, its one of my favourites 😊
Worth the wait, great reaction 😊❤
If you want to see Avi and Mitch at their very best, you should watch their Aha in Singapore. This is live and incredible
Thanks for doing this!! Enjoyed it.
Awesome! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Avi, beautifully showing off his classical training in this.
Happy New year. They have a lovely version of Waving thru a Window from Evan Hansen. Come Along is a great PTX happy video
Oh man, with your comments about Avi and Mitch's voices, and the mention of hearing Mitch's high note live, I totally want to see you react to a video called "Aha!, Singapore, The Star Vista". The video starts with a bit of choral work while Kevin puts his cello away where Avi's low note very probably blew the speakers out a bit, and then they get into their cover of "Aha!" by Imogen Heap and Mitch just goes OFF. It's so mind-blowing, most fans choose to wait until the reactor has a chance to get used to PTX before requesting it.
Great reaction! Now you see why they won an award for this!
I do indeed! Amazing!
Chris, I love that you inserted your face in the thumbnail!
Haha thanks!
You get Mitch slapped🤣😁
Finally subscribed! Love your reactions.
Thanks for subscribing!
This arrangement and video became an instant classic!
It’s sooooo good!
Although they won a Grammy for this arrangement, they only performed it live maybe once and it wasn't even a full performance. There is video out there where they were singing this song at the empire State building. Another song is God rest Ye Merry gentlemen that has a killer high note sang by Mitch in very similar setup. They are currently doing that song on tour live 😁😍🙏🏾
Great reaction 👏🏾
I'm so excited you reacted to this! It's easily one of my favorites twice over! First, PTX slam dunks it yet again, and second because music from "The Nutcracker" is some of my favorite holiday music. Every year when I was a kid mom and I would go to the symphony to see it, starting when I was around 3 (and showing interest in classical music, oddly). She took me to the symphony multiple times each year, always leaving at the point when it became too late for me & I fell asleep. The first symphony concert I was old enough to stay awake for was "The Nutcracker", so it sticks firmly in my mind. "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" is my fave of the entire Suite, but my focus is always on the orchestra pit, not the dancers. :) Glad you were bowled over by this one! :)
Love that! The Nutcracker is very famous and the music is second to none!
Great reaction
I looked but the only live i could find is a performance done on an NFL Sunday. It follows the video including mitch's high note. this is one of my top 5 Christmas songs by PTX
Please react to Carol of the Bells by PTX, and if you do can you find where Mitch breathes while he does his part.? It's one of their earlier videos. I'm really enjoying your enjoyment of all the groups. It makes me happy daily that new people find great music to listen to and share. We need a lot of things in this world and beautiful, fun and amazing music always helps. Decided to add the link, czcams.com/video/WSUFzC6_fp8/video.html, as this is the original cover with Avi. They recently did this with Matt on Christmas Under the Stars show also.
I will be reacting to the Under the Stars one here soon, next week I believe. Someone mentioned it's hard to see where Mitch breathes in that one too! We'll see ;)
Nice! I'd suggest you do Amazing Grace from Pentatonix next. Or, since you did the other version of Mary Did You Know, check out the PTX version.
If you like theatrics I would recommend Making Christmas preformed by Pentatonix. It always tickles me to see "Creepy-tonix"
No one ever mentions the super-short and super-high whistle tone from Mitch at about 2:16 in your reaction-before the BIG obvious high note. See if you hear it...😁 Avi's take on the bass clarinet part is wonderful.
WHAT?! I'll definitely have to go back and see if I can hear it!
Silent night live pls 🔥
I have the rest of the Christmas season lined up :/ Maybe next year! ;)
Great reaction. Please try their collab with Todrick Hall: “The wizard of Ahs”. You’ll love it!
hrm other songs, how about an original by Colm McGuinness in the style of a Disney song, called "Where I Belong"
czcams.com/video/OBGBMbC-L6A/video.html
Live version here 👍🏼
he talks over the singing.......lol
Indeed I do. Can’t help my reaction outbursts! 😜
Granted, the editing is brilliant, but the sequences from 02:00 - 02:02 and 02:05 - 02:08 threaten to trigger seisures.
Dude, if your eye is that itchy you should really go get it checked
Lol okay
