- Despicable Me 4 is the newest entry in this decade's most popular animated franchise. And I have thoughts... especially about the ending.

Despicable Me 4 is a 2024 American animated comedy film produced by Universal Pictures and Illumination, and distributed by Universal. It serves as the sequel to Despicable Me 3 (2017), the fourth main installment, and the sixth overall installment in the Despicable Me franchise. The film was directed by Chris Renaud, co-directed by Patrick Delage (in his feature directorial debut), produced by Chris Meledandri and Brett Hoffman, and written by Mike White and Ken Daurio. It stars the voices of Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin, Joey King, Miranda Cosgrove, Steve Coogan, Sofía Vergara, Renaud, Madison Polan, Dana Gaier, Chloe Fineman, Stephen Colbert, and Will Ferrell. In the film, Gru and his family are forced to relocate to a safe house to hide from Maxime Le Mal, an old rival of Gru who seeks revenge with his girlfriend Valentina. At the same time, one of the new neighbors is intent on returning Gru to villainy.

They hid that whole scene from the trailers and the tv spots.

Yeah, but it was a scene meant to keep people talking, even if it was a short cameo. Part of the No Way Home effect.
I saw someone say that it feels like there was a Despicable Me show but then it was scrapped, stitched together and made into a movie which would explain the 7 different subplots
You know that explanation does make a lot of sense, I think the most glaring example is when Margot got bullied and it was never brought up again.
@@nobody5674 or even Edith and Agnes being in Karate class. This movie was all over the place and left so many questions unanswered. My main question was with Perry’s Daughter being in that Villain school, does he know about it? Is he ok with her wanting to be a villain?
Imagine if the 4th movie was about el machos son getting revenge on gru, like time skip to when hes like 17 or 20. What was his life after El macho is sent to the AVL, maybe hes now an orphan if his dad was his only parent???? idk

The greatest thing about the movie in my opinion is that they didn't market the villains, they just put them as cameos and it was a nice surprise (unlike THAT other 4th movie)
KFP's marketing was honestly so bizarre.
You can easily believe that Vector somehow made it back from Mars, but what bothers me more are the Minion villains looking like they did not age a bit at all... They still look as young as the day we saw them, even though decades have passed already. If characters like Nefario and Gru's mom aged, how come those villains didn't?
There’s one major thing Despicable Me 4 has over Kung Fu Panda 4:
It didn’t ruin one of the greatest animated trilogies of all time

If I had a nickel for everytime some random youtuber Ive never watched before said "if I had a nickel for everytime the fourth movie in a popular animated franchise released in 2024 and had multiple various similarities" before ending it off with the exact same scene from Phineas and Ferb, I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot but its weird that it happened twice right?
Honestly I think vector could’ve been a good villain for the 4th movie. Also more scenes with gru’s brother & Dr. Nefario.

Vector is honestly my favorite character in the franchise.

Yeah, but they're both still very mid movies. DM4 should've been given room for something interesting instead of using the same formula, and KFP4 was the most biggest disappointment in it's own franchise.
Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate continued paving the path Ice Age: The Adventures of Buck Wild started. We'll be seeing more studios desecrate our favorite franchises.

It was cool though in my opinion.
I felt it would have worked 10 times better as a series and without the mega minions. Have episodes be dedicated to certain subplots that tie up nicely in the end.
With how terrible series adaptations from animated movies are these days, I think it would have been forgotten quickly. The movie format works better for Despicable Me IMO.
@GrantKeegan But, (in my opinion) in a format like this, a series would work well.
I’d also like to mention that the posters for Despicable me 4 (that don’t have the mega minions in them) are very good.
Cars 4 is gonna be mcqueen teaching cruz even more and then they have to face off against chick hicks francesco and storm and cruz somehow wins the whole thing
They could've had the girls get superpowers instead of the Minions, Again !
Vector was just Thier so he can dance with the other villains they don't wanna explain it the writers create all kind of plotholes in despicable me and the minions spinoffs like in minions 1 it showed the minions finding gru after he froze scarlet overkill but in minions 2 a flashback contradicts that by the minions wanted to join gru cause they saw he put a help wanted ad and thats how they found his house and how they met the despicable me movies have too many plotholes and inconsistency
Totally agree. I'm a sucker for lore and consistency, so it annoyed me quite a bit.
@@GrantKeegan yes it seems like the writers for the despicable me movies didn't think things through when they made these movies another plothole in the part with the villains in despicable me 4 is they showed belle bottom but she looks the same as when she looked in minions 2 and they movie took place in the 1960s or 70s so she should look really old by that point especially considering gru aged but she didn't seem to age maybe the chinese new year zodiac stone she used in minions 2 kept her from aging but who knows the writers need to get better at not making plotholes for these movies
Back when Minions 2 came out I think there used to be a joke theory of Mr Perkins cloning multiple Vectors. Despite being decades younger than Gru, Vector was shown in that movie too. Perhaps the one in prison is also another clone and not the one from the first Despicable Me 🤔

I wasn’t really intending on seeing the fourth movie in theaters but seeing all the villains there at the end made me pretty happy. Never thought I’d miss El Macho and Scarlet

Comparing this movie to kung fu panda is absolutely criminal. At least kfp4 is mediocre. Probably a 6/10. My honest rating of despicable me 4 is 2/10. It's that bad.
they could definitely mkae scarlet overkill come back to take revenge on the minions (and possibly gru). maybe gru would have a sequence where he doesn't remember her clearly but slowly does when she describes how he defeated her
You already know this franchise might get a six or 10th movie within the franchise. Let’s be honest if you look at the box office for Despicable Me they’re able to to pull in millions to billions
Hollywood's greed knows no limits. They'll have Steve Carell and Pierre Coffin in cages doing their lines in 2060 for Minions 73.

I stand by my case on why the first and second are better. They had more thought put into the story and Gru's developmente amid the ocean of minion jokes.
This is such a lazy defence when the first few movies were genuinely good. Maybe some of us don't want to accept poor writing and calling those people "dumbasses" is more of a reflection on you and your lack of standards.

And then has one name drop early in the movie.
The fact that only Gru and Dr Nafario are the only two who aged after all these years make so little sense. So lazy smh.
At least Illumination gave us Migration this year. That was a solid movie.

The timeline in despicable me 4 didn’t make any sense but the end fight was good
i think this is a "whatever" kind of movie. illumination stopped caring about quality storytelling after the first despicable me. this fourth one was solely made just to pay the bills because minions produce cash.
Making DM4 nonsensical makes it even better.
If I had a nickel for eveytime a video essay I watched compared kung fu panda 4 and despicable me 4 using the id have two nickels meme, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice
The end was perfect.
This movie was so boring and the story made no sense. The villain needed a better backstory. Orrr change it to El Machos son or Vectors Dad being the villain

Kung Fu Panda 4 was trash, it feels pretty dry, and the writting was mad lazy with excluding the Furious Five.
Kung Fu Panda was underwhelming and predictable, it did not live up to the first three movies and what those gave us.
U don’t agree that 3 doesn’t have depth and I think we can all agree this is a little better the Kung fu panda 4.

Pretty much half of the movie has minion gags even though this is Despicable Me and there's too many subplots so yeah i guess this sequel doesn't make any sense :/
They could've just made Dru as the villain. It was literally set up in the 3rd movie with him taking all the minions and said something along the lines of "someone's gotta keep the family's tradition". Make the brothers go back and forth with Dru doing evil stuff and Gru stopping him while exploring more on the family dynamic. And maybe hinting to vector returning for revenge in the post credit scene or something.

I don't care I actually like the despicable me films even the spin off movies and shorts are fun to watch, plus these are heavily towards kids and I myself 19 enjoy the movies regardless of the plot or character development, I'm just here to watch and enjoy the movie
Same, but character development and consistency cost nothing, especially with a multi-billion dollar franchise that many enjoy. I explain at 2:15 why I enjoy the first and second movies more.

I am glad httyd didn't made this mistake or cars yeah they are spin offs but at least not a fourth movie then you would have 4 nickels if they made this mistake
Still enjoyable but easily the weakest one and not well written at all. The villain was plain and forgettable. Most of the film was eye rolling 6 year old humour. The middle was filler plot that goes no where. The overall story wasn't that entertaining.
But I found the mega minions pretty fun and cool and I did find the villains return together was awesome to see.
Honestly after this movie this franchise should just end
I don't think that will happen illumination will want to milk this franchise for every penny just like Blue Sky did with Ice Age.

I never said I the movie was bad (aside from the first half, where I thought it was going nowhere). I actually liked it by the end, but I stand by my criticisms.

I think its wierd how the minions dancing whit that man how turn them in to monsters . And el macho one of the seanc in preson hold a minion in his hand! And the minion smield at him . I dont think the minions enjoyd beaing a monster . And if i get turn in to a monster by some one i dont know . i would be angry at him . Not danceing whit him.

If you're gonna create a multi-billion dollar franchise, consistency in the story and characters is the bare minimum. This is also the reason why I gave up on most of the new Star Wars stuff.

@@lazerfrogstudios Nah man, Pixar made two movies with Inside Out tackling mental health, anxiety and depression in a way never done before, and they became two of the most successful films of all time. The kids are alright.
